Part III: Antecedents of Maria L. Sands

The children of two Delaware County, New York families met and married in Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois in 1844. This essay describes the family life, ancestors and descendants of this couple: Jesse Anson and Maria L. Sands. Both of these individuals came from American colonial families and had the misfortune (from a genealogical point of view) of being raised in one of the most difficult time periods for New York county records. For this reason there exists much speculative and incorrect published information about the couple, their contemporary relatives and their origins. It is our purpose to provide documentation for that which is actually known.

Part I describes the descendants (three generations) of Jesse and Maria (Sands) Anson; Part II and Part III describe the ancestry of Jesse Anson and then Maria Sands, respectively.

Origins of Maria Sands:

The genealogy of the Sands family from Captain James Sands (1622-1651), the immigrant ancestor, is published in multiple sources.¹,²,³The Sands/Palgrave/Alcock line descends from King Edward I ‘Longshanks’ of England (1272-1307).⁴ The Sands came to Block Island from Providence, Rhode Island (James Sands was one of the first settlers) in the 1660’s and intermarried with the Guthries and Rays, also Block Island settlers. They were raided four times by French privateers. They retreated in the 1690’s to Long Island, New York (Cow Neck, now North Hempstead) to the peninsula later called ‘Sands Point’ (north of Port Washington). John Sands I (son of James Sands of Block Island) and his wife Sybil Ray purchased⁵500 acres at ‘Cow Bay, Long Island’ 25 Dec 1691 from Richard Cornell of Rockaway (he had it under a grant from Governor Dongan in 1686). The Sands were violently American at the time of the American revolution as opposed to most of their neighbors, who were loyalists (Tories). Maria’s great grandfather was Benjamin Sands (1758-1843), the youngest son of John Sands II, who with his nephews were rebel smugglers and spies on Long Island.

Generation One

1. Benjamin Sands was born 24 Nov 1735 at Cow Neck, Queens, New York the son of John Sands II and Catherine Guthrie; he died 14 Oct 1824 at Manhasset, Queens, New York and is buried in the Sands Burying Ground, Cow Neck, Queens, New York. He was a miller. He married 12 Nov 1758 at Hempstead, Queens, Long Island, New York Mary Jackson, daughter of (Justice) John and Keziah (Mott) Jackson. She was born 1 Jan 1739 and died 16 Nov 1798 at Cow Neck, Queens, New York; she is buried in the Sands Burying Ground in Cow Neck.

The Sands-Hewlett-Tibbets House on Cow Neck, Hempstead passed to Benjamin, the youngest son of John Sands II before the Revolution.⁶ He was an ardent patriot, Chairman of the Sons of Liberty for the area and was a delegate to the 4th Provincial Congress.⁷ Hempstead, Long Island (which included Cow Neck) was the center of British sympathizers (Tories) before the Revolution. Benjamin was imprisoned, court-martialed and banished from Long Island (to the Nine Partners Patent, Dutchess, New York) by the British for most of the War.⁸

Benjamin and Mary (Jackson) Sands had five children:⁹,¹⁰

2. i. CATHERINE SANDS born 1 Jul 1763. She married Richard Sands born 1760; died 20 Jul 1825.

3. ii. JERUSHA SANDS born 29 Aug 1766; died 14 Apr 1795. She married 26 Sep 1794 at Hempstead, Nassau (Long Island), New York William Sands.

4. iii. GEORGE GUTHRIE SANDS born 22 May 1770 and died in 1812; buried at the Sands Burying Ground, Cowneck, (then Queens), New York. Never married.

+ 5. iv. (JUDGE) OBADIAH SANDS born 22 Aug 1774 at Sands Point, (then Queens), New York; died 30 Jan 1858 at Oxford, Chenango, New York and buried at Franklin, Delaware, New York.

6. v. MARY SANDS born 24 Dec 1777. She married Benjamin Hewlett. He was born 1 Jul 1772 at Cow Neck, (then Queens), New York and died 29 Jul 1825.

Generation Two

5. Obadiah (Benjamin¹) Sands¹¹ was born 22 Aug 1774 at Sands Point, (then Queens County), New York; died 30 Jan 1858 at Oxford, Chenango, New York and buried at his farm in Franklin, Delaware, New York; the remains were later transferred to the Sands plot at the Unadilla Cemetery in Unadilla, Otsego, New York.¹² He married (1) abt 1800 at Delaware County, New York ‘Odyssa’ Weed¹³ and (2) 16 Dec 1805 at Yorktown, Westchester, New York Elizabeth Teed daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Gregory) Teed. She was born 5 Apr 1778 of Somers, Westchester, New York and died 30 Jun 1837 at Unadilla, Otsego, New York and is buried¹⁴ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery.

Obadiah left Sands Point in May 1795 at age 21 and arrived 15 days later at Cookeze (Deposit), Delaware County, New York.¹⁶ He was living in Sidney, Delaware County when he bought land and a house in Delaware County on the Delaware River before his marriage to Elizabeth.¹⁷ Abt 1810 he moved to Bainbridge Village (Jericho)¹⁸ and bought land there in 1811. Obadiah was named a Judge in Chenango County in 1814.¹⁹ He later bought a farm one mile east of Franklin in 1818. About 1845 the family moved to Oxford, Chenango.

Obadiah Sands and Odyssa Weed had a son:²⁰

+ 7. i. OBADIAH SANDS was born 8 Jul 1801 at Deposit, Delaware, New York; died 24 Aug 1856 is buried at Bonus Prairie, Boone, Illinois.

Obadiah and his second wife Elizabeth (Teed) Sands had nine children:²¹,²²

8. i. MARCELLUS SANDS was born 5 Nov 1806 of Delaware County and died 28 Oct 1871 (age 64) and is buried²³ at the Sands plot in the Unadilla Cemetery, Otsego, New York. He married Louisa Chamberlain; she died 17 Mar 1841 at Franklin, Delaware, New York and is buried²⁴ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. Four children.

9. ii. ODESSA SANDS was born 30 Mar 1808; died/buried²⁵ 14 Feb 1827 (age 18) at the Sands plot at St. Matthew’s Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York.

10. iii. CHARLES TEED SANDS was born 6 Jun 1809 and died 27 Mar 1842 and is buried²⁶ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. He married 20 Oct 1841 at Somers, Westchester, New York Anna M. Turk.

11. iv. (DR.) WILLIAM GUTHRIE SANDS²⁸,²⁹ was born 5 Nov 1810 at Bainbridge, Chenango, New York and died 14 Jun 1889; buried³⁰ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. He married 26 Oct 1837 Sarah Eliza Mygatt daughter of Henry and Sarah S. (Washburn) Mygatt. Three children.

12. v. FREDERICK AUGUSTUS SANDS³¹,³² was born 19 Feb 1813 at Bainbridge, Chenango, New York; died 16 Aug 1886 (age 73) at Unadilla, Otsego, New York and is buried³³ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. He married (1) abt 1837 Maria C. Page daughter of Sherman Page; she died 28 Feb 1839 and is buried³⁴ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. He married (2) 20 Jan 1841 at Oxford, Chenango, New York Clarissa A. Mygatt, daughter of Henry and Sarah S. (Washburn) Mygatt as her 2nd husband. She was born 2 Feb 1816 and died 18 Aug 1886 (age 71) and is buried³⁵ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. She married (1) John Donnelly; he died 30 Oct 1838. Frederick had one daughter with Maria and four children with Clarissa. He was in the mercantile business until his father died and then took over managing the estate.³⁶

13. vi. DR. ANDREW JACKSON SANDS was born 2 Oct 1815 at Harpersfield, Delaware, New York; died 5 Jun 1874 (age 58); buried³⁷ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. He married Harriet C. Hubbard. Three children.

14. vii. ELIZABETH ENEID SANDS was born 13 Aug 1818 at Franklin, Delaware, New York and died 7 Mar 1905 (age 86) at New York City, New York; buried³⁸ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. She married 24 Oct 1852 Joshua Chase Sanders son of Jacob and Lydia (Martin) Sanders.³⁹ He was born 28 Jan 1815 at Homer, Cortland, New York and died 6 Jul 1905 at Cortland County, New York and is buried there. No issue.

15. viii. CATHERINE ILIAD SANDS⁴⁰ was born 13 Aug 1818 at Franklin, Delaware, New York and died 21 Mar 1850 (age 31) at Oxford, Chenango, New York; buried⁴¹ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. She married 31 Mar 1846 at Oxford, Chenango, New York James Willard Clarke son of Ethan and Rachel (Case) Clarke.⁴² He was born 20 Jul 1815 at Brookfield, Madison, New York and died 30 Jun 1878 at Oxford, Chenango, New York. He married (2) Susan Eliza Tracy; no issue. Three children with Catherine.

16. ix. (DR.) JEROME BONAPARTE SANDS was born 2 Feb 1821 at Franklin, Delaware, New York and died 10 Feb 1902 (age 82) at Bainbridge, Chenango, New York and is buried⁴³ in the Sands plot of the Unadilla Cemetery, Unadilla, Otsego, New York. He married 11 Jan 1843 Jane Shaw, daughter of Samuel and Lucy (Arnold) Shaw.⁴⁴ She died 3 Jun 1893. Eight children.

Generation Three

7. Obadiah (Obadiah² Benjamin¹) Sands⁴⁵ was born 8 Jul 1801 at Deposit, Delaware, New York; died 24 Aug 1856 at Bonus Prairie, Boone, Illinois. He married (1) abt 1823 at Delaware County, New York Mary Orr, daughter of Walter F. and Mary E. (Craig) Orr. She was born Jan 1802/3 at Delaware County, New York and died 4 Jul 1840 at Bonus Prairie, Boone, Illinois. He was the first settler of Bonus Township, Boone, Illinois.⁴⁶ He apparently moved from Delaware County to Illinois with his friend and partner, Ezra May; they owned land together in Boone County and had neighboring farms.⁴⁷

He married (2) 24 Jul 1842 at Boone County, Illinois Dianitia Mallard, probable daughter of Winniford and Elizabeth Mallard.⁴⁸ She was born 1 Oct 1810 at Gallatin, Sumner, Tennessee and died 14 Oct 1894 at Ludington, Mason, Michigan. She married (1) 18 Jun 1829 at Bond County, Illinois Isaac White and had four children by him. He was born 1808 and died 1841.

Obadiah and Mary (Orr) Sands had eight children:⁴⁹,⁵⁰

17. i. MARIA L. SANDS was(cf. Anson Sands I) born 12 Mar 1824 at Tompkins Township, Delaware, New York; died 9 Feb 1910 at Belvidere, Boone, Illinois. She married 29 Aug 1844 Jesse Anson.

18. ii. BETSEY SANDS was born 2 or 7 Apr 1826 at Tompkins Township, Delaware, New York; died Belvidere, Boone, Illinois and is buried in the Belvidere Cemetery.⁵¹ She married 18 Jan 1844 at Boone County, Illinois George W. Sands,⁵² son of Samuel, Sr. and Artemecia (Covey) Sands.⁵³ He was born 7 Oct 1818 at Hancock, Delaware, New York and died 24 Nov 1893 at Belvidere, Boone, Illinois. Seven children/three lived to adulthood.⁵⁴

19. iii. MARY SANDS was born 18 Feb 1828 of Delaware County, New York and died 20 Aug 1904 (age 76) at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; buried⁵⁵ at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles County, California.⁵⁶ She married abt 1852 Philip Moser; he was born 6 Jul 1826 of Alsace-Lorraine and died 23 Feb 1887 (age 60); also buried⁵⁷ in Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles County.

20. iv. OLIVE SANDS was born 1830 at New York and died⁵⁸ 23 Jan 1871 (age 41) at Elk Grove, Union, South Dakota.⁵⁹ She married before 1850⁶⁰ Joel F. Webber. Five children.

21. v. FREDERICK SANDS was born 20 Mar 1833 at Tompkins Township, Delaware, New York and died 24 Feb 1897 and was buried 26 Feb 1897 at Belvidere, Boone, Illinois and is buried in the Belvidere Cemetery.⁶¹ He married 3 Mar 1857 at Boone County, Illinois Henrietta Brink, daughter of Whiting F. and Lydia R. (Chambers) Brink. She was born Apr 1836 at Union, Broome, New York. Two children.

22. vi. ODYSSA ADELINE SANDS was born 25 Feb 1835 at Tompkins Township, Delaware, New York and died 27 Sep 1921 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois; she is buried in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska. She married (1) Charles E. Duncan, born abt 1830 at Ireland and died abt 1870 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois. She married (2) 19 Jan 1875 at Cook County, Illinois Armatus Licenus Angle, son of Dr. Miles B. and Hannah (Whaley) Angle. He was born 24 Apr 1842 at Berrien, Berrien, Michigan and died 23 Apr 1916 at Vienna, Fairfax, Virginia and is buried in Hampton, Virginia. Odyssa had two children with Charles and a son with Armatus.

23. vii. GEORGE D. SANDS was born abt 1836 and died abt 1836 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

24. viii. WILLIAM B. OGDEN SANDS was born 1838 at Marengo, McHenry, Illinois and died (murdered) 10 Apr 1896 at Pentwater, Oceana, Michigan. He married Caroline R. Carmichael, daughter of Hesakiah and Sarah (Buckels) Carmichael. She was born 15 Sep 1843 of Illinois and died 20 Mar 1918 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois; she was buried 4 Apr 1918 at Pentwater, Oceana, Michigan. Three children.

Obadiah and Dianitia (Mallard) Sands had four children:⁶²

25. i. MELINDA A. SANDS⁶³ was born Mar 1843 of Illinois; died 21 Apr 1933 at Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan. She married (1) 27 Nov 1879 at Ludington, Mason, Michigan Edgar George Maxwell, son of Silas and Polly Maxwell. He was born Feb 1843 of New York and died 27 Jun 1915. He married (1) 2 Oct 1866 at Pentwater, Oceana, Michigan Lydia Crane; she was born 1847 and died 1876. Edgar had two children by Lydia; Melinda had two children that died young.⁶⁴

26. ii. OBADIAH SANDS was born abt 1845 at Belvidere, Boone, Illinois; died 28 May 1929 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois and was buried 29 May 1929 at Cook County, Illinois. He married 28 Feb 1868 at Cook County, Illinois Mary E. Wright, daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth Ann (Ledden) Wright.⁶⁵ She was born 14 Feb 1843 at Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Canada and died 5 Mar 1919 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois; buried 7 Mar 1919 at Cook County, Illinois. Three children.

27. iii. GEORGE W. SANDS was born abt Mar 1849 of Illinois and died 29 Dec 1850 at Illinois.

28. iv. DIANITIA (DINA) SANDS was born Dec 1850 of Illinois; died 1927 at Michigan. She married George Goodsell. He was born abt 1843 of Baden, Germany; died 9 Jan 1899 at Ludington, Mason, Michigan.⁶⁶ Seven children.

13. Both Obadiah Sr. and Jr. had daughters named Odessa; in Obadiah Sr.’s case, his first daughter. Both families used traditional naming patterns (used the same names over and over). Since Odessa is an unusual name and not a Sands family name, if follows that it may be the name of Obadiah Sr.’s first wife and Obadiah Jr.’s mother. It has now been shown by DNA evidence that the Ogdens and the Sands were related. Obadiah was a contemporary of and apparently acquainted with William Butler Ogden (1805-1877), a son of Abraham and Abigail (Weed) Ogden of Walton, Delaware, New York. Ogden also left Delaware County, New York for Illinois, but after Obadiah had already gone; Ogden was the first mayor of Chicago. Obadiah named his youngest son William B. Ogden Sands and the list of his grandchildren includes at least three children named ‘Ogden’ (Ogden Goodsell gson, Jesse Ogden Sands 2gson and Ogden R. Sands 2gson).

20. There are numerous biographies of the prominent sons of Judge Obadiah Sands and Elizabeth Teed Sands all of whom ignore the existence of a first wife. The evidence that Obadiah Sr. had a first wife and a son Obadiah by that wife is as follows: (1) the 1820 census of the Obadiah Sands household lists one male (16-25 yrs)—this can only be Obadiah Jr. as Obadiah Sr. married Elizabeth Teed in 1805 and therefore none of their children would be this old [1820 U. S. Census of Franklin, Delaware, New York, National Archives Roll M33_65, p. 60], (2) the naming pattern of the two Obadiah families is convincing that they share a common heritage, viz. Obadiah Sr.’s daughters: Odessa and Elizabeth and sons: Frederick and William and Obadiah Jr.’s daughters: Odyssa and Elizabeth (Betsey) and sons: Frederick and William, (3) the K. Rowland, CG authored biography of Obadiah Jr. The Pioneers of Winnebago and Boone Counties, Illinois who came before 1841 (see below) names him as ‘Judge Obadiah Sands’ son’ (no citation).
