The Clark Antecedents of Priscilla Clark of Somerset, England
Richard L. Tolman, Ph. D.
Priscilla Clark was born in 1826 in Somerset to James and Fanny (née Hurle) Clark; the Clarks were longtime residents of Buckland-Denham parish in Somerset on the eastern edge of today’s Somersetshire not far from Frome. ‘Buckland-Denham’ is the old name of the village; the spelling has changed in the last century to ‘Buckland-Dinham’. The Clarks of Buckland-Denham parish can be traced back to about 1650, although the oldest records are very difficult to read. Nearly all of the Clarks discovered in the lineage apparently married local girls from Somerset (Fanny Hurle excepted).
Priscilla’s father James married Fanny Hurle of Rode parish in Somerset (later Wiltshire). The Hurles came to Rode from Trowbridge, Wiltshire. Fanny’s maternal line (Cox) originated in Evercreech parish in central Somerset. Identification of James and Fanny is clear from the Buckland-Denham parish registers as are their children from the christening and burial data. Caution is however required as James’ cousin Elias Clark and his wife Elizabeth (King) Clark were having children in the same parish at the same time; most critical is identification of the children who died young as their parents’ names are not given, but fortunately their ages at death are specified which allowed them to be unambiguously identified.
The ancestry of Priscilla Clark descendents from the Clarks of Buckland-Denham is confirmed by at-DNA. Shown in Cluster 1 are DNA matches to ETS (paternal aunt of the author): ‘Anthea Church’.1‘Rogers and Childs 3’, owner scottchurch18, www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/8551909; some sources (accessed 11 Aug 2020).

–Now for some notes on research methodology: the primary sources for Buckland-Dinham vitae are the parish registers and bishop’s transcripts (BT’s) available at FamilySearch. The BT’s (FHL British Film 1526,441) that was searched at the FHL with great difficulty in 2014 has been digitized and can now be viewed online . The parish registers have also been digitized and these online images are ‘somewhat’ easier to read (the early ones are still extremely difficult). FamilySearch and FindMyPast (through their collaboration with the Somerset and Dorset Family History Society) have extracted most of the 18th century data and some 17th century data but are presumed to not have had the courage to tackle the 16th and early 17th century registers. This author read all the registers back to 1540 and extracted all the possible Clark vitae (baptisms, marriages, and burials—over 125 pieces of data), arranged them chronologically and tried to piece together families, based on the assumption that a homestead or tenancy was retained through time from father to son. Note that not all the data could be assimilated into this descendency.
The logic of this plan is based on the fact that in the 16 and 17th centuries families didn’t move much. After 1066 (Wm the conqueror) all land was owned by the Crown who distributed it to various nobility over the centuries. Farmers did not own their land but were tenants on manorial land. In some cases the payment of rents was administered by the Anglican Church. These long-term leases were passed down from father to son.2FamilySearch wiki. ,3Online at Wikipedia, ‘English Land Law’.

But the Milverton PR has Betty Lockyer b. 1769, not 1763; therefore this couple was ruled out.

Thanks for providing this wealth of information. I am descended, I believe, from Abraham Cox (1738-1808) but from his apparent second marriage. I had come to the same conclusion–his marriage to Mary was his first, and to Betty, a second marriage which cannot, so far, be proven. I am descended from their son, Giles (1775-1846).
I am interested, however, in two pieces of information you have listed. Firstly, Abraham’s birth year estimate – I assume that’s just an educated guess (age 25 at his marriage)? And, you have Abraham’s father listed as Samuel–where did you get this name from?
Thanks

Hi cousin Debbie…
This is just a note to tell you I have done more and better on the Abraham Cox line…a new Cox essay is up on the website. As you will note, I didn’t have much luck with the at-DNA data as the Evercreech records are so poor. I didn’t see your DNA match in the three Cox descendants I examined. I’d be relieved to know I could identify at least one Cox cousin…maybe I don’t know your DNA name identity.
Anyway, best wishes–Dick Tolman

You are welcome. I’m glad this work is of interest to you.
I checked my notes, which are unfortunately a little sketchy on this point (from 2009). I found a record of Abraham’s birth to Samuel in West Cranmore in 1738 (parish register is insanely hard to read); it is in the same film cited in ref 54 (FHL 1528,553), but I have it as item 60 on that film. FamilySearch must have changed the film index since 2009, since there are now only 55 items on that film. I will make a note to recheck it when I visit FHL next time. I will update the essay when this is clarified.
Film 1440,950 items 2-4 (the items nos. are missing in the essay, and I will remedy that) is a transcription of the Evercreech PR records by Janet and Linda Reakes and it is from this transcription that I got the record of Giles’ birth–there may be more to find, if one goes back to read the original record, but it will also be very hard to read since it is so early.
Priscilla Clark is my second great-grandmother. The research you have done on the Clark surname is very exciting to me. I have been viewing the Buckland Dinham Parish books which are available online at FamilySearch.org. I have found several baptism, marriage and burial records based on the sources you provided. I’m thrilled. The Buckland Dinham records don’t provide much identifying information, e.g., parents’ names in a marriage record. So, for example, how confident are you that James Clark’s (chr 1793) parents are John and Betty (Kinton) Clark. I guess I’m just used to German Parish books which often provided much more detail. Does my question make sense:

Gee…I don’t know how to answer that. I guess I’m about as sure as I can be at this point. John and Betty are in the same parish and there are no other Clarks in the proper age range to be James’s parents. It’s always possible in genealogical research to find another reference that disproves previous best choices. I believe it is implicit that I am always ready to accept another explanation/choice–just show me the proof. I am getting ready to reexamine the series of Priscilla essays to remove linkrot, so I will be revisiting the Clarks again to update/expand this work.
