The Pattons of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania

By Darlene E. Tolman and Richard L. Tolman, Ph. D.

This essay complements the Duncan essay published earlier in 2025. It describes the patriarchal lineage of John Patton (1771-1821), husband of Nancy McMurtry (Duncan) Patton. A detailed genealogy of John and Nancy’s family is described in ‘Two Duncan Families: Scotland to Pennsylvania and Kentucky/Missouri’ on the 29deadpeople website.

Darlene Essig Tolman (DET), a descendant of the Pattons of Pennsylvania had her DNA sequenced; a search of the DET DNA for Patton/Pennsylvania and Patton/Kentucky1Some matches did not realize their Kentucky Pattons came from Pennsylvania. gave more than 40 matches. A 19th century Common Ancestor (CA) for two matches was readily identified (see Cluster 1).

Wilson and John (VI) were brothers, sons of James Patton (b. 1771) of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and later Fleming County, Kentucky.

In the 18th century (from the Patton/Pennsylvania DNA search) there were no less than four matches descending from Cumberland County2Cumberland County was formed in 1750 from Lancaster County (Animap). (PA) Pattons—three from Wm Alexander Patton and one from Matthew Leander Patton (see Cluster 2). Since we have a proven paper trail from John Patton (III) (1739-1809, born at Pennsylvania; his father immigrated to Cumberland Co.) to DET (see Genealogical Summary), Matthew Leander Patten can probably be eliminated as a direct line ancestor since he already had a son John (1728-1788).

Matthew Leander Patton (1705-1788) was likely a brother to John (II). John (I) settled in what became Peters Twp, Cumberland and then Franklin in 1784, Pennsylvania; his son John (II) moved to Hopewell Twp, Cumberland County whereas son Matthew stayed in Peters Twp (cf Genealogical Summary for more detail).

Ancestry trees are in wild disagreement about the relationships (all without sources) of these Pattons. They mostly agree that the hypothetical father of John (II) and Matthew Leander is a John Patten (I) (1664-1760);3See, for example, online at www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/179745707 ‘Patton Family Tree 01 Jan 2022’ owner: Brian Eugene Patton. John’s (II) mother and our John’s (III) grandmother was then Matilda Ann Wideman, wife of John M. Patton (I).4‘A Genealogy of the Patton Family’; online at https://www.helbrongenealogy.com/PATTON.html; hereafter Helbron Genealogy. This was confirmed as follows. Wm Alexander Patton is a son of Matthew Leander Patton.

A search of DET DNA for Wideman/Pennsylvania matches gave twelve significant matches of which two were disregarded as Patton matches; the Wideman/Weidman family came from Hessen, Germany—immigration was in early 1700’s (see Cluster 3). This is a confirmation5William Alexander Patton married Jean McClenahan in Ireland in 1753. As this is a collateral line, DET should possess NO MEANINGFUL McClenahan matches—in fact, there were nine matches, but all could be eliminated as spurious or related to DET’s Smoot line (2) or Wm Alexander’s marriage (1). or proof of John Matthew Patton (I) 1664-1760/Matilda Ann Wideman 1685-1767) as John Patton’s (III) (1747-1809) grandparents; Matthew Leander Patton and John (II) are sons of this couple.6Online at https://garypatton.net/lpatton_family/D17.htm#c502553, 17th and 18th generations; hereafter Gary Patton Genealogy There are 16 years between the births of John (II) and Matthew Leander so we must conclude that there may have been other children born in those intervening years in Ireland who either died in infancy or the record of their births has been lost.

Examination of the Big Spring Presbyterian Membership reveals that there is at least one other Patton family membership in the church.7Paten/Patton Church membership record, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, 1789: Gilbert Ernest Swope, History of the Big Spring Presbyterian Church, Newville, Pa., 1737-1898 (Newville, PA: Times Steam Printing House, 1898); Pastorate of Rev. Samuel Wilson; membership record lists supposedly generated 1789 (image 31/229) but more likely 1791-2 since John was not received in fellowship until 1791, Big Springs consistently underestimates age when compared to better sources; hereafter Big Spring Presbyterian membership; online at Ancestry. The other family is likely related to the Fayette County Pattons. Considering the DNA evidence, the Joseph Patton (1742-1810) of the Fayette County, Pennsylvania Pattons is undoubtedly of the same family (see Cluster 4). Joseph’s father was Matthew Leander Patton8FamilySearch Family Tree. and therefore his grandfather is John M. Patton (I) (1664-1760) as has already been proven. Isabella is a dau of James, son of Matthew Leander Patton.

John Patton (II)’s wife was Susannah Tussey;9The RootsWeb WorldConnect Community Trees Index (Ancestry) has Susannah (1683-1751) as John (I)’s wife, but without any sources. This is a conflict with Matilda Wideman, John (I)’s proven wife and also is impossible to reconcile with the Charity legend from South Carolina. she was not John (I)’s wife!101767 Will of John Patton [this is John (II)], Pennsylvania, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, Southampton Twp, Cumberland County, Wills A-C, 1750-1779, images 106-7/361, mentions wife Susannah, dau Mary Johnson, son William, nephew Robert Patton, and Abigall Tassey; online at Ancestry; hereafter 1767 Will of John Patton. Some have given her the middle name of Charity as there is a reference to a ‘Charity’ in connection with John (I)’s servitude in the Carolinas, but this is not appropriate. A search of DET’s DNA for Tussey/PA identified two matches lending strong support to Susannah Tussey being on the direct line. Jacob’s father was John Tussey of New Castle, Delaware and he died at Tussey Mountain, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania (see Cluster 5).

PATTON GENEALOGY

Generation A

     1.  Matthew Patoun/Patton ‘the Martyr’ was born abt 1600 at Rosehall, Kilmarnock, Scotland and died 19 Dec 1666 by beheading. He was a shoemaker from Newmilns and was the famous Covenanter martyred by Charles I of England with 8 other Calvinists in Glasgow vide infra.
He married11Patoun/Porteous marriage; online at FamilySearch, Scotland, Marriages 1561-1910 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYM4-DPR. 19 Jun 1639 at Old Kirk Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothan, Scotland Christiane Porteous. She was born 6 Oct 1601 and died 1680 at Edinburgh, Scotland.12Helbron Genealogy
FamilySearch Family Tree has parents for Matthew: Reverend William Patton (1590-1641; born Fifeshire, died in Donegal, Ireland) and Margaret Johnstone (1593-1659). The Patton lineage goes back another four generations to Richard Patton III, b. 1481 in Derbyshire, m. Grace Baskerville, b. abt 1489 in London.

Matthew and Christian Porteous Patton had a son.

+ 2 i. JOHN MATTHEW PATTON (I) was born 1664 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland and probably died 1741 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Generation 1

     2.  John Matthew Patton (I) was born 1664 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland and probably died13David V. Agricola Patton Lineages Originating in Pennsylvania Prior to the American Revolution (Cleveland, OH: D. V. Agricola, 2003, 3rd Ed.), mostly relevant sections are 28 and 29 (begin p. 65), an excellent, exhaustive work, online at FamilySearch; hereafter Agricola. in 1741 at Cumberland, Pennsylvania.14Findagrave #262953362; no grave.,15Many trees have John (I) married to Susannah Tussey [this is clearly wrong as his son John (II) refers to ‘his beloved wife Susannah’, see 1767 Will of John Patton]; children are also named in the Will, but not ones borne by Matilda. If he had died in 1767 he would have been age 103, which is also unlikely. As part of the Calvinist persecution, he was imprisoned at Glasgow in Tarbooth Prison. On 22 May 1684 the Privy Council allowed 22 men (including Patton) to be released to work off their sentences (10 years) and establish a Calvinist colony in South Carolina (the Cardross Colony). They arrived in Charleston aboard the Pelican in 1684. John Patton was one of the few who subsequently returned to Scotland and presumably married. He then moved to Ireland before embarking for America and settling in Cumberland County (then Lancaster Co.), Pennsylvania.16Helbron Genealogy.,17Online at wikitree.com/Patton-586#Sources and sources cited therein; hereafter Wikitree. It was a common practice in immigrating to America from Scotland or fleeing from persecution to stop in Ireland for a generation to earn more money before embarking on a ship for Boston.

The couple removed to Londonderry, Northern Ireland abt 1695 and then to Pennsylvania abt 1734. On 29 Jul 1734 John became a ‘Blunston’ licensee22Agricola, section 28.1; Samuel Blunston obtained these licenses which were ‘permissions to settle’ as Indian titles had been extinguished; this was actually not done until 1736. of 200 acres on the north side of Conococheague Creek (Pleasant Spring) in a Scotts-Irish settlement.23Thomas Creigh History of the Presbyterian Church of Upper West Conococheague (Chambersburg, PA: Repository Printer, 1877); interesting, no genealogical information. The Will does not mention several children attributed to him (see Findagrave #81912063). He married 1723 probably in Cecil County, Maryland Elizabeth Jane Alexander. Matthew lived initially in Cecil County, Maryland after immigration and moved later to what became Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. After Gen. Braddock’s defeat in Jul 1755, the frontier was virtually defenseless; Matthew’s farm was attacked in 1755 and his barn burned—more than 50 persons were captured or killed; Matthew was the author of a petition to the colonial legislature describing problems. His farm was abt a mile SE of Fort Loudon, in Peters Twp (after 1784 in Franklin County).

Joseph Patton (1746-1822, Findagrave #27390610) and his wife Sarah Weir (1750-1832, Findagrave #27390699) had a large family in Washington, Fayette County (formerly Westmoreland and before that Cumberland County). These Pattons were of Scottish origin. John Patton (1742-1810) is not easily accommodated into this family. Unfortunately, the Pattons had a short list of children’s names they drew from, and one must be very careful to sort out John’s children from Joseph’s.,63To clarify: Joseph and Sarah Weir Patton’s children (those not born in Fayette/Cumberland are not included): Mary (1776-1832), Rebecca (1778-1853), John (1780-1862), David (1781-1810), Thomas (1784-1874), Joseph (1784-1851), Robert (1791-1856), and James (1793-1856). 62. There is a confounding Patton family in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in the early 18th century. Note the poorly documented family trees on Ancestry ‘Burkhart/McClain/Corwin-Curwin/Guild Family Tree’ owner: MaryTrich2 www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/3392362 (hereafter MaryTrich2 Tree and ‘My Family Tree’ owner: Michelle Swanson www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/10556671 (hereafter Michelle Swanson Tree). John Patton (1742-1810) is not easily accommodated into this family. Unfortunately, the Pattons had a short list of children’s names they drew from, and one must be very careful to sort out John’s children from Joseph’s.

63. To clarify: Joseph and Sarah Weir Patton’s children (those not born in Fayette/Cumberland are not included): Mary (1776-1832), Rebecca (1778-1853), John (1780-1862), David (1781-1810), Thomas (1784-1874), Joseph (1784-1851), Robert (1791-1856), and James (1793-1856). The 1820 U. S. Census of Washington, Fayette, Pennsylvania of the Joseph Patton household of 8: 1male under 10, 2males 10-15, 2males 16-25, 1male over 45, 1female 16-25, 1female over 45; online at Ancestry.

There are at least five Patten families here—John and Margaret (both age 57; Thomas’ brother John—son of Joseph) with Stephen (age 19), four children of Thomas and Anna plus Hiram (age 35, son of John) and Harriet (age 31) and their five children, and John (age 70) and Nancy (age 69, b. Lancaster PA) with Ellen (age 20, b. Fayette, PA); online at Ancestry. See Michelle Swanson Tree.

There is also another confounding Patton family which attended the Big Spring Church, William Lindsay’s district (image 35/229); William Patton (b. 1709, age 80) and his family. They are apparently not closely related to the John Paten family but are more closely aligned with the Joseph Patton bunch that we encounter in Fayette County; online at Ancestry.

119. FamilySearch Family Tree claims (w/o source) that she was born at Callaway County, Missouri in 1771; this is unlikely as Missouri was not settled at that time; records from Callaway County begin the in the 19th century. It is more likely that she was born of Kentucky as that is where her children were born. In that time period, Kentucky was sparsely settled; the Duncans of Bourbon County were early settlers from Virginia.
