Descendants of Daniel deJarnatt (1713-1754) of Virginia
and Allied Families(Johnson, Swinford, Monroe, Riegal, Williams)

In the course of a genealogical study of history, a pervasive and recurring theme is the vigorous, sometimes brutal persecution of non-Catholics by Catholic true-believers. It is a major motivation for the move of families from one location to another. This essay concerns one of these Protestant families that fled France after revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 that had protected to some degree Protestants in France (called Huguenots). Those that fled to America first had to proceed to England in order to obtain permission for the move to America. After their residence in England for a time King William sent in 1699 a group of over 500 Huguenots under the leadership of the Marquis de la Muce to Gloucester County, Virginia (from the recording of children’s births in Abington Parish); this group included Jean deJarnat.1,2
DeJarnat implies that the family belonged to the French nobility. The family of Jean de Jarno/Jarnaud/Jarneot occupied a fortress near Poitiers as early as 1454 and acquired land in La Seguiniere (near Cholet between Nantes and La Rochelle) at that time.3
This Huguenot immigrant Jean deJarnatt married a Mary Mumford, a Virginian of Gloucester County in 1703 and raised a large family.4 There is no record of Jean ever leaving Gloucester County; his widow moved to Prince Edward County to live with her dau Elizabeth after his death.5 The oldest son Elias had many descendants.6 Little is known of the second son John; he is not known to have issue. Little is also known of the life of the third child, a daughter Mary.7 The fourth child Daniel has not received a lot of genealogical attention; he and his descendants are the subject of this essay. Daniel Sr. died in Nottaway Parish in Prince Edward County; his children included a son Daniel Jr. who was an itinerant carpenter—he married late eventually settling in eastern Kentucky as one of the first pioneers. The other (younger) children of Jean and Mary DeJarnatt were Elizabeth,8 Joseph9,10,11,12 (settled Caroline County, Virginia) and Ellenor13 (settled Prince Edward County); they are well studied and all three had many descendants. The Frost genealogy (note 1) is most comprehensive genealogical source for all children of Jean and Mary.
Some histories or family trees14 have an additional child ‘Mumford’ for Jean and Mary, some say born abt 170015 others 1723—there is no actual birth record. It strains credulity that if the DeJarnats had a child out of wedlock in 1700, Mary Mumford would hardly have named him Mumford Mumford. A son Mumford b. 1723 cannot be ruled out, but no sources are available to substantiate his birth/baptism. A more reasonable explanation is put forth in the Torrance history16 of the Dejarnett family published in the William and Mary Quarterly. This history cites (p. 146) the Virginia Land Patents 1623-1774 where a Mumford Dejarnett was granted 400 acres in Amelia County on Mountain Creek; this is the only citation naming a Mumford DeJarnette. This is further clarified in the 1754 will of Daniel Dejarnett (1713-1754, a son of Jean and Mary Dejarnett) of Nottaway Parish, Prince Edward County devising to son Mumford 400 acres on Mountain Creek and an another parcel of 400 acres to his brother Daniel (Jr.) along with smith’s tools. The only argument against this explanation is that Mumford would only have been abt 5 yrs old at the time the patent was granted.17 This author has found no other evidence of a Mumford DeJarnat born in the 1700-1725 time period in the record.
GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY
Generation One
1. Jean/John de Jarnat18,19 French Huguenot, was born abt 1680 at La Rochelle, Manche, Basse-Normandie, France and probably died abt 1720 at Gloucester County, Virginia. He was the son of Samuel DeJarnette (b.1640) of Poitiers, Vienne, Poitou-Charentes, France. There is a family cenotaph near Frog Level, Virginia in the forest off route 301 that has interesting biographical details.20 The Gloucester County records were completely destroyed in the Civil War reducing greatly the amount of detail available about this family.
Jean petitioned for naturalization in 1705.21 He married22 abt 1703 Mary Mumford daughter of Edward and Mary (Watkins) Mumford of Gloucester County, Virginia.23 The immigrant Mumford was named Thomas (originally from Yorkshire, England); he apparently was a companion of Captain John Smith on his second voyage to Jamestown before 1608.24 His probable gdau Mary was born 1683 of Gloucester County and died 1765 at Prince Edward County, Virginia. After Jean/John’s death she moved to Prince Edward County with her daughter Eleanor DeJarnette McGehee.
Jean and Mary (Mumford) DeJarnette had seven children all born/baptised and, except as noted, are recorded in the Abington Parish, Gloucester, Virginia (Dejurner).25,26
2 i. ELIAS DeJARNETTE was baptized 20 Aug 1704 and died27 Jul 1769 at St. Patricks Parish, Prince Edward, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Byrd.28 They lived in the part of Amelia County that became Prince Edward County, Virginia. They had five children.29
3 ii. JOHN DeJARNETTE was baptized 4 Nov 1706 and died between 9 Aug 1768 and 17 Jul 1769 at Prince Edward Co., Virginia. No known issue; he may never have married.30
4 iii. MARY DeJARNETTE was baptized 5 Feb 1708; she may have died 15 Nov 1743.31,32
5 iv. KATRENIA ELIZABETH DeJARNETTE was baptized 170933,34 (or 1701) and died after 1783. She married at Virginia in 1735 Edward Thomas McGehee/Mackgehee, son of Thomas and Ann (Bastrop) McGehee. He was born abt 1702 at Cumberland Co., Virginia and died and died Jan 1771, Cumberland Co., Virginia. The McGehee’s are descended from Richard DeClare (signer of the Magna Carta) and Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland.35 Ten children.
+ 6 v. DANIEL DeJARNATT was baptized 24 Jan 1713 and died 1754 at Nottaway Parish, Prince Edward, Virginia. He married Martha Ford, sister of Christopher Ford.
7 vi. JOSEPH LATANE DeJARNETTE was baptized 3 Feb 1716 and died 1791.36 He married abt 1639 Mary Pemberton and settled in Caroline county founding the ‘Spring Grove Plantation’ (originally 5000 acres).37,38 Six children.
8 vii. ELLENOR/ELEANOR DeJARNETTE was born 5 Sep 1720 and baptized 20 Nov 1720; she died 1775. She married39 30 Oct 1737 Jacob McGehee, son of Thomas and Ann (Bastrop) McGehee of King William County. Jacob served in the French and Indian War. The couple moved from King William County to Amelia County where Jacob owned a mill on the Bush River and 400 acres. After her death Jacob married (2) Ann ____, no issue. Twelve children.

Generation Two
6. Daniel DeJarnatt (Jean1) was baptized 24 Jan 1713 and died 1754 at Nottaway Parish, Prince Edward, Virginia. He married41 abt 1738 at Lunenburg County, Virginia Martha Ford, dau42 of Daniel and Mary Ford and sister to Christopher Ford (he fought in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia Militia; died 1788 at Amelia County, Virginia and is buried43 in the Ford/Vaughn Cemetery). She was born abt 1715 at Virginia and died Mar 1782 at Prince Edward County (formed from Amelia County in 1754).44 Daniel was in Amelia County in 1753.
Daniel and Martha (Ford) DeJarnatt had seven children all born in Virginia.45
10 i. MARY M. DeJARNATT was born abt 1739 and died abt 1760. She married abt 1758 Richard Perryman.46
11 ii. BETTY FORD DeJARNATT was born abt 1741. She married ____ Crenshaw.47
+ 12 iii. DANIEL DeJARNATT Jr. was born abt 1743 and died 13 Mar 1811 in Madison County, Kentucky. He married abt 1775 Judith Johnson of Lunenburg County, Virginia.
+ 13 iv. MUMFORD DeJARNATT was born abt 1745. He married at Prince Edward County Elizabeth ____. He moved to Charlotte County, Virginia.
+ 14 v. Captain JOHN DeJARNATT was born 28 Jun 1748 and fought in the Revolutionary War. He married 12 Jan 1769 at Prince Edward County Jemima Owen daughter of John and Phoebe (Brackett) Owen.
+ 15 vi. CHRISTOPHER DeJARNATT was born abt 1749. He married at Prince Edward County Ann ____.
16 vii. LYDIA DeJARNATT was born abt 1751 and died before 1780. She probably married John Taylor,48 born 1749. Son John Taylor and two daus.
17 viii. MARTHA DeJARNATT was born abt 1753. She married abt 1761 (as his 2nd wife) at Prince Edward County Richard Perryman son of Richard and Mary Perryman. He was born 1729 and died Mar 1769. Five children.49
Generation Three
12. Daniel DeJarnatt Jr.(Daniel2 Jean1) was born abt 1743 and died50 13 Mar 1811 in Madison County, Kentucky. He was a carpenter. He bought land from his brother-in-law in 1762 while he lived with them. In 1764 he moved to Chesterfield County, Virginia, then briefly to Brunswick County, Virginia and finally in 1797 he moved by way of the Cumberland Gap and the Boonesborough Trace to Madison County, Kentucky NE of the county seat at Richmond to the junction of Tates Creek and Shallow Ford. Part of the 8-room log dwelling he built is still standing; Daniel and Judith are buried on his farm.51
He married abt 1775 Judith/Juda Johnson dau of James and Susannah (Payne) Johnson. She was born 1746 of Lunenburg County, Virginia died 17 Mar 1838 at Madison County, Kentucky and was buried on the DeJarnett family plantation at Shallow Ford.52 Eight children, 3 slaves.
JOHNSON Genealogy:
Judith Johnson’s father was James Johnson, born 1715 and died 1787 at Lunenburg County, Virginia. He fought in the Revolutionary War.53 He married54 1736 at Virginia Susannah Payne; she was born 1718, dau of William and Judith (Merriman Baker) Payne of Lancaster County, Virginia.55
Daniel and Judith (Johnson) DeJarnatt had eight children all born in Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg, Virginia.56

18 i. MARTHA FORD DeJARNETTE was born 24 Jun 1774 and died 1816 at Barren Co., Kentucky. She married58 13 Feb 1796 at Madison Co. Kentucky Giles Kelley son of Giles Kelley of Brunswick Co., Virginia. He died at Barren Co., Kentucky; both are buried on his farm on Fallen Timber Creek.59 Seven children.
19 ii. LYDIA DeJARNETTE was born 20 Jan 1776.
20 iii. Maj. JAMES DeJARNETTE was born 7 May 1777 at Lunenburg County, Virginia and died 13 May 1859 at Madison Co., Kentucky; he and his wife are buried at the family cemetery at Shallow Ford. He married60 4 Jul 1793 at Madison Co., Kentucky Elizabeth Sims, dau of William and Martha (Embry) Sims. James and his brother John both served61 during the War of 1812 in the 13th Regiment (Dudley’s) of the Kentucky Militia. James was captured at Fort Meigh and paroled a week later; he fought in the ‘Battle of the River Raisin’ {also known as the Battle of Frenchtown (Michigan)}. Seventeen children, born 1800 to 1830.62,63
21 iv. MARY (Polly) DeJARNETTE was born 5 Dec 1779. She probably married64 28 Dec 1797 at Madison County, Kentucky William Howard.
22 v. JOHN DeJARNETTE was born 18 Mar 1782; he enlisted (War of 1812) Mar 1813 at North Carolina and was killed in action later that year. He married65 1 Jun 1804 at Madison Co., Kentucky Parthana Hoy dau of William and Sarah Hoy. Two children (Greenup Hoy and John, Jr.). Parthana, born 1782 at Madison County, Kentucky, married again (2) John Sappington and had six more children. She died 7 Sep 1834 and is buried at Sappington Cemetery, Camargo, Montgomery, Kentucky.66,67
+ 23 vi. ABIJAH DeJARNETTE was born 5 Jul 1785 and died 1861 at Savannah, Missouri.
24 vii. MILDRED DeJARNETTE was born 10 Apr 1787 at Lunenburg County, Virginia and died 27 Dec 1867 at Tennessee. She married68 Jun 1805 at Madison Co., Kentucky William Hoy dau of William McGee and Sarah Hoy.69 He was born 5 Jan 1783 and died 5 Mar 1856 at Tennessee. Husband and wife are buried at County Farm Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee.70 They had seven children.
25 viii. SUSANNAH PAYNE DeJARNETTE was born 5 Mar 1789 and died71 20 May 1854 at Pendleton county, Kentucky. She married72 21 Dec 1815 Edmund Wells.73 They had nine children.74
13. Mumford DeJarnatt (Daniel2 Jean1) was born abt 1745 and died after 1810 . He married at Prince Edward County Elizabeth ____.75 He moved to Charlotte County, Virginia before 1810,76 probably in 1786.77
Mumford and Elizabeth DeJarnatt probably had at least four children.78
26 i. SAMUEL DeJARNETTE born abt 1770 and married79 20 Jan 1794 at Charlotte, Virginia Milley Rice.

14. John DeJarnette (Daniel2 Jean1) was born 26 Jun 1748 and died 21 Dec 1799. He married 12 Jan 1769 at Prince Edward County Jemima Owen daughter of John and Phoebe (Brackett) Owen.83 Jemima was born 1752 at Prince Edward County, Virginia and died 1821 at Anson County, North Carolina; both husband and wife are buried84 in the Dejarnette Cemetery, Anson, North Carolina. A few years before the American Revolution, John and his family moved to Anson County, North Carolina on the Pee Dee River near Smith’s Ferry. He fought in the Revolutionary War (said to be a friend of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, who supposedly visited them after the War).85 He died 1784; his will mentions only 4 children (but does not name them).86
John and Jemima (Owen) DeJarnatt probably had seven children.87
30 i. MARTHA DeJARNETTE was born abt 1770. She married (2) 1791 John Pemberton son of Richard and Amy (Stith) Pemberton. He was born 1766.88 Seven children.89
31 ii. MUMFORD DeJARNETTE, born 1771, died in infancy.
32 iii. JOHN DeJARNETTE, Jr. was born 1774.
33 iv. MUMFORD DeJARNETTE was born 10 Feb 1776 at Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina and died and was buried 5 Aug 1823 at Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.90 He married91 12 Nov 1798 Frances Hannah (Frankie) Pickett dau of Samuel Pickett. She was born 26 Aug 1780 and died 23 Nov 1840 at Autauga Co., Alabama.92,93 At least two children.
34 v. PHOEBE DeJARNETTE was born abt 1778 and died Sep 1840. She married94 1791 James Watkins son of Christopher and Mary Jane (Thomas) Watkins of Anson County.95 Nine children.96

15. Christopher DeJarnette (Daniel2 Jean1) was born 28 Jun 1748 at Prince Edward Co., Virginia and died 21 Dec 1785 at Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.97 He married at Prince Edward County Ann ____. Christopher is mentioned as a ‘nephew’ in the will of Mary Dupuy, the widow of John B. Dupuy.98
Christopher and Ann DeJarnette had at least two children.
37 vi. JOHN DeJARNETTE was born abt 1764. He married abt 1785 Rachel ____. They lived in Nottaway County, Virginia. At least one son John T. Dejarnette.99
38 vi. DANIEL DeJARNETTE was born abt 1764. He married before 1801 Keziah Cook100 dau of William and Keziah Cook. Two children.
Generation Four
23. Abijah DeJarnette (Daniel3 Daniel2 Jean1) was born 5 Jul 1785 and died 1861 at Savannah, Missouri. He married101 9 Apr 1807 at Harrison Co., Kentucky Sarah (Sally) Swinford, dau of Joshua and Mary (Doane) Swinford. Abijah was a farmer in Madison Co., Kentucky. He sold land to a son in 1852 and moved to Grant County, Kentucky. Sally was born 1 Apr 1790 at Harrison County, Kentucky and died 23 Oct 1866 at Grant County, Kentucky;102 buried103 at Clarks Creek Cemetery, Dry Ridge, Grant, Kentucky. In 1856 Abijah filed for divorce and Sally filed a cross suit for $400 and two negroes. He later moved from Grant County to a frontier county in Missouri (Andrew County) where he lived with son Christopher until he died in 1861.104,105
SWINFORD Genealogy:
Sarah Swinford’s father was Joshua Ethridge Swinford, born 2 Jul 1762 at Pendleton County, Kentucky and died 1 Jan 1820 at Harrison County, Kentucky. He married106 (1) 8 Apr 1788 at Rowan County, North Carolina Mary Elizabeth ‘Polly’ Doane, dau of Hezekiah and Sarah (Bland) Doane. Joshua married107 (2) 28 May 1810 at Pendleton, Henry, Kentucky Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Crook; they had at least four children. First wife Polly was born 1765 at North Carolina and died 1801 at Rowan County, North Carolina. They had five children, including Sarah.108
Joshua’s father was James Madison Swinford, born 1740 at North Carolina and died 1800 at Harrison County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth ____.
Mary’s father may have been (no good sources) Hezekiah Doan, born 1737 at Provincetown, Barnstable, Massachusetts and died 28 mar 1808 at Wellfleet, Barnstable, Massachusetts. He may have married 1761 at New Hanover, Bladen, North Carolina Sarah Bland, dau of James A. and Mary (Fairfax) Bland.109
Abijah and Sally (Swinford) DeJarnatt had twelve children.
39 i. JUDITH J. DEJARNATT was born 5 Jul 1808 at Harrison County, Kentucky and died 16 Jun 1829. She married 18 Jun 1825 at Harrison County, Kentucky William Thomas Huffman, Jr., son of William Thomas Huffman of Virginia (near Potomac River). He died before 15 Dec 1838 when his estate was inventoried and sold. Two sons.110
40 ii. POLLY DeJARNATT was born 22 Sep 1810 at Kentucky.
41 iii. HENRY HARRISON DeJARNATT was born 22 Jan 1812 and died 12 Nov 1849. He married111 26 Sep 1833 at Harrison County, Kentucky Mary Swinford (her mother was a Whitehead). She was born 13 Jun 1813 at Kentucky and died 13 Feb 1902 at Shamrock, Missouri and was buried near Montgomery City, Missouri. Nine children. Harrison lived in Montgomery City, Montgomery, Missouri; all but the last of the children were born near Cynthiana, Harrison, Kentucky.112
42 iv. ABIJAH DeJARNATT Jr. was born 28 Aug 1815. He married a Miss Edwards.113
43 v. JOHN W. DeJARNATT was born 24 Feb 1818 and died 23 Jan 1899 at Crittenden County, Kentucky. He married114 (1) 11 Nov 1838 Margaret Ann Williams. She was born 1820 and died 1888 at Grant County, Kentucky. He married (2) 1890 Mrs. Lutie A Williams of Crittenden, Kentucky. John and Margaret moved to Grant County in 1841, where John was elected sheriff in 1853. He lived in Crittenden County until his death 23 Feb 1899; buried115 at Williamstown Cemetery, Williamtown, Grant, Kentucky. Eight children (Margaret) all born in Grant County.116
44 vi. WILLIAM HOY117 DeJARNATT was born 27 Apr 1820 and died 4 Jun 1890 at Colusa, Colusa, California. He married 17 Dec 1844 Atha Ann Burruss, dau of William and Harriette (Roher) Burruss. Atha was born 13 Nov 1825 and died Feb 1916. Five children all born at Colusa County, California.118
45 vii. ARTEMISIA DeJARNATT was born 15 Dec 1822 and died Mar 1888 at Sedalia, Pettis, Missouri; buried119 26 Mar 1888 in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia. She married120 4 Jul 1841 at Harrison County, Kentucky Perry Franklin McNeese. He also died and buried121 in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Sedalia. They lived in Sedalia, Pettis, Missouri. At least two children.122
46 viii. SARAH DeJARNATT was born 22 Sep 1824.
47 ix. NANCY DeJARNATT was born 3 Sep 1825.
48 x. MARTHA ANN DeJARNATT was born 10 Feb 1829 at Harrison County, Kentucky and died 2 Feb 1886. She married123 28 Oct 1852 at Grant, Harrison, Kentucky Thomas Gray of Fayette County, Kentucky, son of John Gray. He was born 19 Apr 1827 at Bourbon County, Kentucky and died 17 Apr 1907 at Owen County, Kentucky. Husband and wife are buried124 at the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Jonesville, Grant, Kentucky. Nine children.125

Generation Five
49. Christopher Greenup126 DeJarnett (Abijah4 Daniel3 Daniel2 Jean1) was born 22 Dec 1831 and died 28 Dec 1913 at Williamstown, Lewis, Missouri. He married127 13 Jul 1856 Amelia Ann Monroe, dau of Thomas and Louisa (Vaughn) Monroe.128 She was born 29 Dec 1831 at Clay County, Missouri and died 25 Mar 1921 at Lewistown, Lewis, Missouri. Before his marriage he worked in a store for his brother William in St. Joseph, Missouri. He later bought a farm in Williamstown, Lewis, Missouri where he was a justice of the peace for several years.129 In 1860 he had moved to Nodaway, Andrew, Missouri with wife and one child Evalina; his father Abijah was living with them.130 In 1900 Christopher and Amelia Ann were living in Reddish, Lewis, Missouri with dau Laura.131 Husband and wife are buried132 in the Providence Cemetery, Williamstown, Missouri.
MONROE Genealogy:
Amelia Ann Monroe’s father was Thomas Monroe, born 1798 at Woodford County, Kentucky and died before 1880.133 Thomas married134 (1) 10 Sep 1818 at Howard County, Missouri Elizabeth Garrett, dau of Abel and Nancy Elizabeth (Davis) Garrett and had four children with her before she died in 1826 at Saline County, Missouri.135 Thomas then married136 (2) 17 Sep 1826 at Clay County, Missouri Louisa Vaughn, dau of Thomas and Nancy (Jackson) Vaughn. Louisa was born 1806 at Kentucky and died after 30 Jul 1880. They had three children including Amelia Ann.

Thomas’ father was William Monroe, born 16 Sep 1770 at Westmoreland County, Virginia and died 18 Sep 1840 at Savannah, Andrew, Missouri. Thomas was the son of John J. and Winifred (Berryman) Monroe. William married 1790 at Virginia Agatha Agnes West. Agnes was born 1770 at Westmoreland County, Virginia and died 7 Mar 1840; William and Agnes are buried at the Savannah Cemetery, Savannah, Andrew, Missouri.138 They had nine children.139
Louisa’s father was Thomas Vaughn, born 1782 at Montgomery County, Virginia and died 1835 at Clay County, Missouri. Thomas married 3 Sep 1802 at Clark County, Kentucky Nancy Jackson. She was born 1784 at Amelia County, Virginia and died at Clay County, Missouri. They had nine children.140
Christopher and Amelia Ann (Monroe) DeJarnette had seven children.
51 i. EVALINE DeJARNETTE was born 9 Aug 1858 and died in 1946 at Stanton County, Kansas. She married 5 Jan 1879 John M. Shellenberger.141 He was born Apr 1847 at Pennsylvania and died 13 Dec 1929 at Kansas. Husband and wife are buried in the Johnson Cemetery, Stanton, Kansas.142 Five children.143

53 iii. ROBERT S. DeJARNETTE was born 14 May 1864 at Adams County, Illinois and died 18 Oct 1946 at Kahoka, Clark, Missouri.144 He married 3 Oct 1888 Emma Armould, dau of Christian and Sarah Ann (Stouffer) Armold.145 She was born 3 Mar 1855 at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died 4 Sep 1932 at Kahoka, Clark, Missouri. Husband and wife are buried146 in the Kahoka Cemetery, Kahoka, Clark, Missouri. Robert and Emma were deaf from age 11 and 13, respectively, from quinine overdose.147 No issue.
54 iv. LUCY DeJARNETTE (twin) was born 17 Mar 1868 and died 16 May 1954. She married 4 Feb 1891 Harvey Burgess son of John Burgess.148 Husband and wife are buried in the Lewistown Cemetery, Lewis, Missouri.149 One daughter Ada.150
55 v. LUCIUS DeJARNETTE (twin) was born 17 Mar 1868 and died 18 Aug 1869.
56 vi. ALVIN DeJARNETTE was born 3 Apr 1870 and died 22 Jun 1935. He married151 3 Feb 1897 at Keokuk, Lee, Iowa Bertha E. Hays dau of John E. and Elizabeth (Hornbeck) Hays. She was born 25 Jan 1877 at Missouri and died 24 Sep 1961. Alvin moved from Lewiston, Missouri to Waukomis, Oklahoma in 1899.152 He was a barber. Husband and wife are buried153 at Gracelawn Cemetery, Edmond, Oklahoma, Oklahoma. Three children.154
57 vii. LAURA DeJARNETTE was born 27 Jul 1872. She married155 7 Feb 1943 (at age 70) at Lewistown, Lewis, Missouri Thomas Anderson of Lewistown, Missouri.156 She was single in 1900157 and 1940.158

Thomas Jefferson DeJarnette (Christopher5 Abijah4 Daniel3 Daniel2 Jean1) was born 23 Aug 1861 at Savannah, Andrew, Missouri and died 24 Sep 1922 at Marshall County, Oklahoma.159 He married 3 Aug 1888 Alice Catherine Riegal, dau of Josiah and Sarah Ann (Leist) Riegel. Alice was born 28 Apr 1861 and died 9 Sep 1940 at Lovell, Logan, Oklahoma; both Alice and Thomas are buried160 at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Marshall, Oklahoma. They moved to Oklahoma abt 1900.161,162
RIEGAL Genealogy:
Alice Catherine Riegal’s father was Josiah Jonah Riegal, born 24 Feb 1835 at Pickaway County, Ohio and died 6 Oct 1885 at Colony Twp, Knox, Missouri.163 Josiah married164 (1) 6 Feb 1859 at Fairfield County, Ohio Sarah Ann ‘Sally’ Leist, dau of Charles L and Elizabeth Eliza ‘Eliva’ (Meyers) Leist. Josiah married165 (2) 18 Nov 1873 at Indiana Anna Verne Corder as her second husband. She married166 (1) 4 Mar 1868 at Harrison County, West Virginia John B. Irons. Anna was born 25 Oct 1842 at Virginia and died 7 Jan 1916 at Marceline, Linn, Missouri. She and John Irons had two children (both died young) and she and Josiah had five children.167 Wife Sarah Ann was born 27 Feb 1837 at Amanda Twp, Fairfield, Ohio and died 20 Oct 1872 at Knox County, Missouri. Josiah and Sally had eight children that included Alice Catherine Riegal. Josiah, Sally, and Anna are buried168 in the Colony Cemetery, Knox County, Missouri.

Josiah’s father was Jesse Riegal, born 20 Mar 1809 at Windsor, Berks, Pennsylvania and died 20 Apr 1891 at Amanda Twp, Fairfield, Ohio. He was the son of John George and Maria (Czatelmire) Riegel; their people came Rheinland-Pfalz (Germany) in the previous century. He married (1) 27 Mar 1834 at Allegheny Twp, Berks, Pennsylvania Catherine Huffert, dau of Hans Huffert. Jesse married170 (2) 11 Jan 1881 at Circleville, Pickaway, Ohio Leah Swander; she was born 1843, no issue with Jesse. Catherine was born 10 Feb 1810 at Alleghany, Berks, Pennsylvania and died 29 Jul 1879 at Amanda Twp, Fairfield, Ohio. They had ten children.171
Sally’s father was Charles M or L Leist, born 28 Jan 1808 at Fairfield County, Ohio and died after 1880. He was the son of John and Barbara (Labar) Leist. He married172 Elizabeth Eliza or ‘Eliva’ Meyers. Elizabeth was born 1813 at Pennsylvania and ide 12 Sep 1882 at Shelbyville, Shelby, Illinois; buried173 at Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. The Leist line goes back several additional generations.174
Thomas Jefferson and Alice Catherine (Riegal) DeJarnette had six children. The first five born in Williamstown, Lewis, Missouri.175,176
58 i. EARL GUY DeJARNETT was born 8 Dec 1889. He married177 1 Oct 1915 at Guthrie, Oklahoma Myrtle Catharine Wareing, dau of George Henry and Emma Susan (Stratton) Wareing. In 1920 he was living with his in-laws in Marshall, Logan, Oklahoma.178 He was a farmer and owned a farm 7 mi west of Wellington, Kansas on Route 160.179 Four children.180
59 ii. ALBERT GREEN DeJARNETT was born 21 Aug 1891 and died181 31 Dec 1955 at San Bernardino County, California. He married182 11 Apr 1915 at Marshall County, Oklahoma Altha Adeline Harman, dau of William James and Margaret Ellen (Ireton) Harman. She was born 12 Dec 1894 at Marshall, Oklahoma.183 They lived in Barstow, California and are both buried184 at Mountain View Memorial Park, Barstow, San Bernardino, California. One child Russell.

61 iv. LAWRENCE ELDON DeJARNETT was born185 4 Feb 1897 and died Oct 1968 at Denver County, Colorado. He married186 8 Jun 1921 at Oklahoma Mary Ann McKay dau of James W. and Olive Marie (Howe) McKay. She was born 1897 and died 1977. Both are buried187 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Littleton, Arapahoe, Colorado.
62 v. EDWARD RALSTON DeJARNETT was born188 14 Nov 1899 and died Apr 1978 at Houston, Harris, Texas. He married Effie Elma Cross dau of John Riley and Martha Jane (McDaniel) Cross. Both husband and wife are buried189 at Brookside Memorial Park, Houston, Harris, Texas. At least one son.
63 vi. LENA ANN DeJARNETT was born 1 Nov 1902 at Marshall County, Oklahoma. She married190 19 Aug 1923 at Garfield County, Oklahoma Russel E. Randle son of John D. and Jennie H. Randle. He was born 11 Nov 1892 at Rensselaer, Jasper, Indiana and died 1951 at Oklahoma; buried191 at Rose Hill Burial Park, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma. They lived at Duncan, Stephens, Oklahoma.192 No issue.193

23. Leo Hodge DeJarnette (Thomas6 Christopher5 Abijah4 Daniel3 Daniel2 Jean1) was born 28 Dec 1894 and died 11 Apr 1917 and was buried194 at the South IOOF Cemetery in Marshall, Logan, Oklahoma. He was killed in an oil-rig accident (see Figure 2). He married195 27 Apr 1915 at Logan County, Oklahoma Jennie May Williams, dau of Moses Henry and Rebecca Jane (Elliott) Williams. Jennie was born 14 Apr 1892 at Logan County, Oklahoma and died 30 Jul 1964 at Sedan, Chautaqua, Kansas.196 She married (2) abt 1919 at Oklahoma George Lewis Ross, son of Alvin and Andromecha (Henderson) Ross. George was born 3 May 1878 at Mahaska County, Iowa and died 15 Sep 1963. He married (1) Ruth Ray; she died 1913. Jennie had at least two more children with George.197 Jennie and George are buried198 in the Greenwood Cemetery, Sedan, Chautaqua, Kansas.

Jennie May William’s father was Moses Henry Williams, born 17 Mar 1858 at Wrexham, Denbigh, Wales and died 18 May 1926 at Crescent, Logan, Oklahoma. Moses married 12 Mar 1882 at Winfield, Cowley, Kansas Rebecka Jane Elliot, dau of Capt. Alfred Boyce and Amanda Jane, (Rinker) Elliot. Wife Rebecka was born 10 Jan 1866 at Emporia, Lyon, Kansas and died 8 Jan 1961 at Crescent, Logan, Oklahoma. They had eight children.202
Moses’ father was William Edson Williams, born 23 Sep 1833 at Wrexham, Denbigh, Wales and died 18 Aug 1920 at Marshall, Logan, Oklahoma.203 William was the son of William and Alice (Parry) Williams; William senior was sent to Tasmania(sentenced to 14 years; he was caught poaching with four companions); he returned to Wales in 1881 after 47 years.204,205 The son Wm Edson married 1 May 1858 at Denbighshire, Wales Eunice Roberts, dau of Joseph and Catherine (Lewis) Roberts. Eunice was born 9 Apr 1836 at Denbigh (lived at Henllan Street), Denbigh, Wales and died 12 Jan 1921 at Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma. They immigrated separately before 1870.206 They had eight children.
Rebecka’s father was Capt. Alfred Boyce Elliot, born 7 May 1836 at Vermilion County, Illinois and died 1 Feb 1904 at Crane, Stowe, Missouri. He fought in the Civil War in the Kansas Infantry (Union).207 He married208 15 Mar 1857 at Dallas, Polk, Iowa Amanda Jane Rinker dau of Washington and Mary (Polly) (Hazelton) Rinker. Amanda was born 23 Mar 1841 at Union, Pike, Indiana and died 18 Jun 1923 at Dexter, Cowley, Kansas; husband and wife are buried209 at Monett Odd Fellows Cemetery, Marionville (near Aurora), Lawrence, Missouri.
Alfred’s father was Foster Elliot, born 1787 and died 1865. Alfred’s mother was Peninnah Boyce, born 1794 at Chowan County, North Carolina and died 1859 at Berwick, Polk, Iowa.210
Amanda’s father Washington Rinker born 1805 at Greene County, Tennessee was the son of Johann George Rinker of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Mary Magdalene Surber of Virginia.211 Amanda’s mother Mary (Polly) Hazelton was dau of Royal Hazelton of Rutland County, Vermont and Mehitable Arms of Franklin County, Massachusetts.212
Leo and Jennie May (Williams) Dejarnette had two daughters.213,214
64 i. VERA I. DeJARNETTE was born 30 Mar 1916 at Marshall, Logan, Oklahoma and died 28 May 2003 at Lehi, Utah, Utah.215 She married 1934 in Crescent, Oklahoma Gerald Winchester Swank. She was a special education teacher for the deaf. She is buried in the Sandy City Cemetery, Sandy, Salt Lake, Utah.216 Four children.

LEONNE DOLOREZ DeJARNETT217 was born 27 Sep 1917 at Lovell, Logan, Oklahoma and died 20 Dec 2014 at Edmond, Oklahoma, Oklahoma.218 She married 7 Jun 1937 at Guthrie, Oklahoma Edward Harland Tarrant. She is buried219 at the Oakland-Knowles Cemetery, Crescent, Logan, Oklahoma next to her husband. Four children.
George and Jennie May (Williams Dejarnette) Ross had two sons.220

126. Origin of the name GREENUP: Christopher Greenup DeJarnette may have been named for the tremendously popular Kentuckian Christopher Greenup (Kentucky’s third governor, 1804-1808). Greenup was from Fairfax Virginia, but was active in Kentucky politics all of his life, dying in Franklin County in 1818. Christopher Greenup DeJarnette’s brother William (they were close and worked together in Wm’s store in St. Joseph) had a son that he named Greenup DeJarnette.
