Aline was born on the 16^th of August 1909 to Arthur and Helen (Milius) Hofheimer of York, Pennsylvania. When she was three years old (abt 1912) her family moved to Warrenville (now called Warren), Somerset County, New Jersey. Her home, ‘the Eaves’ was a ‘grand mansion’ which included a lovely ballroom. Her father’s parents, Nathan and Lena, who lived in New York City, bought about 350 acres across from their property and built another mansion which had twenty-one rooms and five baths. Today this edifice serves as the Warren Municipal Building. Her grandparents’ estate included tennis courts, horse stables, a polo field, a six-hole golf course, two ponds, a carriage house, family mausoleum and a grotto. The landscaping was done by the noted Olmstead Brothers (Central Park, NYC and the Duke Estate, NJ).

Aline as a little girl was called by her first and second names (Aline Rhonie and/or AlRhonie; her mother’s family was of Southern derivation). Later, still a child, she acquired the nickname of ‘Pat’ which carried through her married years. However, as an adult, Aline Rhonie became her legal name and professional signature.

She was born to a life of luxury and enjoyed outdoor activities, especially horseback riding. She was quite the equestrian, competing in many events. Her grandmother encouraged her to follow her artistic talents and for many years she studied with the American painter, John Sloan (1871-1951).

She became interested in aviation after a single-engine airplane had landed on the Hofeimer Estate. She was fascinated by the stories the airmail pilot told her. She earned her private pilot’s license and soloed on her 21^st birthday in a De Havilland Moth in 1930 in Reno, Nevada (she was there probably waiting for her divorce). She owned three airplanes in her life: a Wasp Jr. powered Stearman, a Lambert Monocoupe of 90 hp and a Luscombe Phantom 272Y with a Warner 145.⁴

Aviation was an important part of her life with many achievements:

Roosevelt Field in Garden City, New York, known as the ‘cradle of aviation’, inspired Aline to create a huge fresco mural in Hangar F, depicting the great pioneers and first conquerors of the mystery of flight: ‘Early Birds 1908-1916: The Pre-Lindbergh Era of American Aviation’. Aline, at the invitation of the famous Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera, flew to Mexico City to learn the techniques to paint the fresco. She, in turn, taught him some techniques she had learned from noted painter John Sloan (tempera). She worked on the fresco mural (106’ x 12.5’, windows excepted) from 1935-1938. It was in two parts: Early Birds 1 and 2 and was removed when the airfield was sold and the hangar was torn down. It has been preserved and is in storage with the present owners—Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in Flushing, New York.

Aline’s first marriage was to L. Richard Bamberger (23 Feb 1928); it ended in divorce in 1930. Her second marriage was to Reginald Langhorne (Peter) Brooks 25 May 1933, which also ended in divorce in June 1937. Peter Brooks, nephew of Lady Astor, also a pilot, was an air show performer. For their 17,000 mile-honeymoon they travelled cross-country in their own airplanes vide supra.

Toward the end of her life she maintained homes at Sands Point, Long Island and Palm Beach, Florida. She died of chronic asthma and emphysema¹⁰^,¹¹ in 1963 at age 53 in Palm Beach where she had been confined in the hospital for two weeks.

Aline Rhonie (Pat Brooks) was an interesting, courageous, adventurous, talented and unusual woman for her day; in an interview May 31, 1940 she said, ‘I hit a man once—socked him in the nose—and it bled. He said that women weren’t good for anything but having babies.’¹²

She descends from German Jewish ancestors on both sides of her family. They were probably driven from the Iberian peninsula to Germany sometime after the 15^th century.¹³

First Generation

1. Baruch Hofheimer¹⁴ was born 20 Feb 1793 at Dettensee (near Horb am Neckar), Karlsruhe, Baden-Wuerttemberg, and died¹⁵ 21 Oct 1872 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg (Germany). He married Ester Nathan, born 13 Apr 1795 at Friedsrichstabe bei Hohenzollern-Hechingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and died 26 Jun 1878 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Baruch and Ester (Nathan) Hofheimer had two children:

+ 2 i. JACOB HOFHEIMER, born 9 Apr 1822 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and died 3 Dec 1895 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg.

3 ii. BABETTE HOFHEIMER,¹⁶ was born 4 Oct 1823 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and died 15 Mar 1850 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg. She married (1) David Halevi¹⁷ and (2) David Oettinger She had a dau Caroline by Oettinger.¹⁸

Second Generation

1. Jacob Hofheimer was born 9 Apr 1822 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg the son of Baruch and Ester (Nathan) Hofheimer and died 3 Dec 1895 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg. He married 22 Jun 1847 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg Katherina Therese Rosengart, daughter of Lamle and Hindle (Rosenheim) Rosengart of Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg. She was born 1 Aug 1827 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and died 15 Sep 1900 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg.¹⁹^,²⁰

Jacob and Theresa (Rosengart) Hofheimer had eight children:

5 ii. ABRAHAM HOFHEIMER, born 31 Oct 1849 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and died 6 Jul 1913 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg. He married Sophie Tannhauser daughter of Immanuel and Sara (Adler) Tannhauser. She was born 15 May 1859 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and died²¹ 27 Jun 1910 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg. Five children.²²

6 iii. WOLF HOFHEIMER, born 9 Mar 1852 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and died 13 Jun 1918 at Stuttgart, Wuerttenberg, Germany. He married Hannchen Ottenheimer daughter of Wolf and Babette (Dreifuss) Ottenheimer. She was born 14 Jun 1868 at Ludwigsburg, Wuerttemberg, Germany and died 15 Dec 1901 at Stuttgart, Wuerttemberg, Germany. Three children.²³

7 iv. SIGMUND HOFHEIMER, born²⁴ 23 Jun 1854 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden- Wuerttemberg and died²⁵ 28 Feb 1896 at San Remo, Italy and buried at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg. He emigrated²⁶ to America after May 1871. He married Pauline Henle, born 14 Sep 1855. Three girls.²⁷

8 v. LENA HOFHEIMER, born 24 Jun 1858 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg.²⁸ She married Albert Hirsch.

9 vi. ERNST ISAAC HOFHEIMER, born 24 Jun 1858 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and died 3 Jun 1919 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois and was buried at Mt. Mayriv Cemetery (now Rosemont Park).²⁹ He emigrated³⁰ 1873 and was a merchant, also listed as a distiller. He married³¹ 16 Apr 1885 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois Henrietta Bauland daughter of Morris and Tereca Bouland.³² She was born³³ Nov 1857 at Illinois and died 14 May 1941 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois and was also buried 16 May at Mt. Mayriv.³⁴ (at least two sons)

10 vii. KLARA HOFHEIMER, born 9 Mar 1862 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg.³⁵ She married Isidore Maier and had four children.³⁶ She emigrated to New York City from Rotterdam on the ‘Statendam’ 23 Dec 1938 (a widow, visa issued in Berlin).³⁷

Third Generation

4. Nathan Hofheimer was born 4 Apr 1848 at Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg the son of Jacob and Katharina Therese (Rosengart) Hofheimer and died 18 Nov 1921 at Atlantic City, Atlantic, New Jersey. He emigrated after Jun 1866³⁹ and made his way to Kentucky where he was engaged in the liquor resale business.

He married 12 May 1873 at Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky his first cousin Helene (Lena) Rosengart, daughter of Abraham and Mary (Baer) Rosengart [Abraham, like Katherina Therese, was also a child of Lamle and Hindle (Rosenheim) Rosengart of Buttenhausen, Reutlingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg]. She was born 27 Aug 1855 at Paradise, Kentucky and died⁴⁰ 12 Apr 1922 at Atlantic City, New Jersey.⁴¹

Nathan and Lena (Rosengart) Hofheimer had three children:⁴²

12 i. RHONIE HOFHEIMER, born 1874 at Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky and died 1907.⁴³ She married 1897 Charles Hirschon/Hirschhorn the son of Louis and Severinne Hirschon of Mannheim, Germany.⁴⁴ He was born 22 Oct 1861 at New York City, New York and died 9 Oct 1925 at New Rochelle, New York.⁴⁵ He married (2) 30 Oct 1912 at Manhattan, New York, New York Beatrice L. Steele. Five children with Rhonie.

+ 13 ii. ARTHUR BARUCH HOFHEIMER, born 5 Mar 1876 at Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky and died 10 Feb 1927 at Manhattan, New York, New York.

14 iii. LESTER HOFHEIMER, born⁴⁶ 14 Mar 1880 at Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky and died⁴⁷ 30 Nov 1936 at New York City, New York. He married⁴⁸ 4 Sep 1913 at Manhattan, New York, New York Corinne Kodziesen daughter of Aaron and Jennie Kodziesen of Long Island, New York.⁴⁹ She was born 2 Aug 1892 at Brooklyn, New York and died 11 Aug 1963 at New York City, New York. Three children.⁵⁰

Fourth Generation

13. Arthur Baruch Hofheimer born 5 Mar 1876 at Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky the son of Nathan and Lena (Rosengart) Hofheimer and died⁵² 10 Feb 1927 at Manhattan, New York, New York. He enlisted⁵³ in the National Guard in May 1898, served at Camp Black, was promoted to corporal, and was discharged Oct 1898.

He married⁵⁴ 18 Apr 1905 at Manhattan, New York, New York Helen W. Milius, daughter of Alexander Samuel and Harriet (Steinfeld) Milius. She was born 20 Aug 1880 at Savannah, Chatham, Georgia and died 16 Jun 1960 at Warren, Somerset, New Jersey.

Arthur and Helen (Milius) Hofheimer had five daughters:⁵⁵^,⁵⁶

15 i. MARJORY HOFHEIMER, born 1906 at New York and died after 1963.⁵⁷ She married⁵⁸ 1926 Harry Frank Jr. son of Herbert Barnett and Jannet R. Frank.⁵⁹ He was born 1902 at New York and was a stockbroker.⁶⁰

16 ii. DORIS HOFHEIMER, born 26 Jan 1908 at New York and died⁶¹ May 1985 at Ventnor City, Atlantic, New Jersey. She married⁶² 14 Jul 1932 at New York City Henry G. Auerbach son of A. Leopold Auerbach and (2) ____ Walton of Ventnor, New Jersey.

+ 17 iii. ALINE RHONIE HOFHEIMER⁶³, born 16 Aug 1909 at York, York, Pennsylvania and died 7 Jan 1963 at Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Florida.

18 iv. HELENE JOY HOFHEIMER, born 1914 at New Jersey and died after 1963.⁶⁴ She married⁶⁵ (1) (div) 6 Sep 1934 at New York City Joseph John Siccardi, son of James Siccardi of Plainfield, Union, New Jersey and (2) 25 Aug 1955⁶⁶ at Westfield, Union, New Jersey Raymond S. Roth of Union.⁶⁷

19 v. NATALIE HOFHEIMER, born 23 Jan 1917 at New Jersey and died 17 Jun 1987 at Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Florida.⁶⁸^,⁶⁹ She married⁷⁰ (1) in 1939 Alan Mann Mayer, son of Alexander and Debbie M. Mayer of New York City. He was born⁷¹ abt 1912 and died⁷² 2 Mar 1948 in Manhattan, New York, New York. She married (2) abt 1956 at Claridges Hotel, London Colman B. Stein of Washington, D. C. He was born 28 Jan 1912 and died⁷³ 30 Jun 1992 at Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Florida; he was an attorney.⁷⁴ Two children.

Fifth Generation

17. Aline Rhonie (Pat) Hofheimer born 16 Aug 1909 at York, York, Pennsylvania the daughter of Arthur and Helen (Milius) Hofheimer and died 7 Jan 1963 at Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Florida. She married⁷⁵ (1) 23 Feb 1928 at New York City (div)⁷⁶ (Professor) L. Richard Bamberger son of William Bamberger.

She married (2) 25 May 1933 (div) at Warrenville, Somerset, New Jersey Reginald Langhorne (Peter) Brooks, a well-known race-pilot.⁷⁷ He was the son of Reginald Brooks and Phyllis Langhorne Brand (a sister of Lady Astor) of Richmond, Virginia. No issue from either husband.

First Generation

1. August Milius was born 1769 of Zweibruecken, Rheinland-Pfalz (Germany) and died abt 1847 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. He may have immigrated on the Jupiter (Le Havre to New Orleans) 12 Dec 1836.⁷⁹^,⁸⁰ He married Helene Mayer, born⁸¹ 1784 and died after 1850.⁸²

August and Helene (Mayer) Milius had five children:⁸³

+ 2 i. FERDINAND ANTINO MILIUS, born 1804 at Zweibruecken, Rheinland-Pfalz and died 4 Jun 1876 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio.

3 ii. FRANCES MILIUS, born 1809 at Zweibruecken, Rheinland-Pfalz and died⁸⁴ 13 Nov 1876 at Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. She married abt 1838 Simon Himmelrich. Four children.

4 iii. LEOPOLD MILIUS, born⁸⁵ 20 Apr 1814 at Zweibruecken, Rheinland-Pfalz and died Apr 1893 at Ohio. He married Rachel ____, born 1815 in France. Six children.⁸⁶

5 iv. WILLIAM SOL MILIUS, born 30 May 1816 at Zweibruecken, Rheinland-Pfalz and died 25 Nov 1890 at St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri and is buried at Price Hill United Jewish Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. He married⁸⁷ (1) 10 Feb 1846 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio Dolphine Tiphnah Wolf. She was born 1823 and died 1847 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. He married (2) abt 1849 Eva Deutsch; she was born 1821 at Bavaria and died 1869 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. A son with Dolphine and five children with Eva.⁸⁸

6 v. AUGUST MILIUS, born 9 Jun 1821⁸⁹ at Zweibruecken, Rheinland-Pfalz.

Second Generation

2. Ferdinand Antino Milius was born 1804 of Zweibruecken, Rheinland-Pfalz (Germany) and died 4 Jun 1876 at Manhattan, New York, New York and is buried⁹⁰ Adath Israel Section, Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York. He was a clothier and manufacturer of shirts.⁹¹ He married 1838 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio Esther Rachel Wolf daughter of Abraham and Eleanor Schonette (Anschel) Wolf,⁹² both of Rheinland-Pfalz who emigrated to Cincinnati. She was born 15 Apr 1821 at Friedelsheim, Duerkheim, Rheinland-Pfalz and died⁹³ 14 Jan 1897 at Manhattan, New York, New York and is buried Adath Israel Section, Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York.⁹⁴

Ferdinand and Rachel (Wolf) Milius had nine children:⁹⁵^,⁹⁶^,⁹⁷

7 i. JEANNETTE MILIUS, born Jan 1839 in Ohio and died⁹⁸ 12 Nov 1916 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois. She married abt 1857 Abraham Liebenstein. He was born 1828 in Bavaria and died⁹⁹ 23 Dec 1884 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Thirteen children.¹⁰⁰

8 ii. MEYER H. MILIUS, born 1841 in Ohio and died¹⁰¹ 15 Dec 1898 at Manhattan, New York, New York. Probably never married (single at 39).¹⁰²

+ 9 iii. ALEXANDER SAMUEL MILIUS, born May 1843 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio and died 23 Nov 1903 at Manhattan, New York, New York.

10 iv. ROSALIE MILIUS, born Dec 1846 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio and died 27 Feb 1922 in Manhattan, New York, New York. She married 17 Jan 1869 at Manhattan Abraham S. Gans.¹⁰³ Six children.

11 v. ADELINE MILIUS, born Mar 1848 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio and died 20 Feb 1937 at Manhattan, New York, New York. She married 11 Feb 1904 at Manhattan, New York, New York Adolph Bondy.¹⁰⁴ No issue.

12 vi. FLORA MILIUS, born 1850 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio and died after 1910 at Hudson River State Hospital, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York.¹⁰⁵ Never married.

13 vii. JULIA H. MILIUS, born Jan 1855 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio and died 7 Jul 1927 at Manhattan, New York, New York. She married¹⁰⁶ 15 Feb 1880 at Manhattan, New York, New York Jacob H. Himmelrich. He was born 1846 at Ohio.¹⁰⁷ Two children.¹⁰⁸

14 viii. DELIA MILIUS, born 1856 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio and died after 1930 in the New Jersey State Hospital for the Insane, Hanover, Morris, New Jersey.¹⁰⁹ Never married.

15 ix. AUGUSTUS Z. MILIUS, born Jun 1857 at Chicago, Cook, Illinois and died 3 Apr 1938 at Manhattan, New York, New York. He married 1887 at Manhattan, New York, New York Julia Gendering.¹¹⁰ Two children.

Third Generation

9. Alexander Samuel Milius born May 1843 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio and died 23 Nov 1903 at Manhattan, New York, New York. He married¹¹¹ 1879 at Manhattan, New York, New York Harriet (Hattie) Steinfeld daughter of Simon and Amelia (Isaacs) Steinfeld.¹¹² She was born 12 Oct 1860 at Manhattan, New York, New York and died¹¹³ 20 Apr 1948 at Manhattan, New York, New York.

Alexander and Harriet (Steinfeld) Milius had two children:

+ 16 i. HELEN W. MILIUS, born 20 Aug 1880 at Savannah, Chatham, Georgia and died 16 Jun 1960 at Warren, Somerset, New Jersey. She married¹¹⁴ 18 Apr 1905 at Manhattan, New York, New York Arthur Baruch Hofheimer. See Hofheimer lineage above.

17 ii. FREDERICK ALEXANDER MILIUS, born 29 Jul 1882 at Savannah, Chatham, Georgia and died¹¹⁵ 4 Apr 1925 at Manhattan, New York, New York. He was an importer ¹¹⁶; never married.¹¹⁷

  Thanks for your comment. I get the feeling you wished that a change should be made, but I cannot find any problem to fix. Check out no. 9 in the August Milius lineage; I had even cited your tree on ancestry (ref 112). Lemmeknow if I’ve missed something.
