The Ancestry of Nancy Graham, wife of Chauncey Loveland,
born 1797 in the Western Reserve of Connecticut: A DNA Study

PART 2

Nancy Graham (1797-1845) Ancestors: The Coltrin/Hunn/Maxham lineages

We will deal first with the wife and parents of Samuel Graham and then examine the supporting maiden name DNA evidence. Then we will look at progenitors of Samuel Graham and finally the distant Graham relatives, the New Hampshire Grahams, and discuss the confirmatory absence of other relevant surnames.

The Wife of Samuel Graham, b. 1771

We see from the Graham Genealogical Summary in PART 1 that Nancy Graham’s father was Samuel Graham. The wife of Samuel Graham is usually left blank in most trees except at FamilySearch Tree where his wife is ‘Hanna Coltrin’ with a bad reference (linkrot) at familytreemaker.genealogy.com in 2014 or ‘Sarah (Sally) Coltrain’ at Millenium Search[simple_tooltip content=’1. Millenium File ‘Samuel Graham’ b. 20 Jun 1771, spouse: Sarah Sally Coltrain, from family records; online at Ancestry (accessed 8 Feb 2020).’]1[/simple_tooltip] (no actual source). The wife cannot be Sarah Coltrin 14 as historical records show she already had a spouse vide infra. A search of ETS DNA matches produced many hits, shown below in Cluster 5; ‘Donnabengle’[simple_tooltip content=’2.    As if they were trying to confuse us, the Coltranes intermarried frequently with Grahams–but not the Connecticut Grahams, but the Hugh Graham family of New Hampshire; both families come from Scotland. The New Hampshire Grahams are not closely related to the Connecticut Grahams. If there is a Common Ancestor for the two Graham families, he is in Scotland, has low cM matches and is beyond the scope of this DNA study and the available data from Ancestry.

The immigrant Coltrin/Coltrane family lived in upstate New York locations where they were in close proximity with the New Hampshire Graham family (see 1790 census citation vide infra). Later the Coltranes moved to Tolland County, just northeast of Hartford, Connecticut where they were close to Wethersfield, Hartford and the Connecticut Grahams. Hannah Coltrin, born 1766 at Wethersfield is the likely wife of Samuel Graham (no source).

It is noteworthy that when the Mormons made the 1847 trek to the Salt Lake Valley they did so in the same fashion as Moses when he led the Hebrews out of Egypt to the Promised Land—organized into ‘hundreds’ and ‘tens’. Zebedee Coltrin was a captain of the second ‘ten’;[simple_tooltip content=’14. Whitney, Orson F. History of Utah, Vol 1. (Salt Lake City, UT: George Q. Cannon & Sons: 1892) p. 353 and Andrew Jenson The Pioneers of 1847, Vol 7 (Salt Lake City, UT: Andrew Jenson, 1888), p. 90.’]14[/simple_tooltip] this ‘ten’ included Chauncey Loveland (Zebedee was his wife’s cousin). Soon after their arrival, Zebedee, Chauncey and Stephen H. Goddard left to harvest salt from the Great Salt Lake.[simple_tooltip content=’15. Stephens, Calvin Robert ‘The Life and Contributions of Zebedee Coltrin’, a Brigham Young University Masters Thesis (1974), p. 69-70; online at https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=6137&context=etd.‘]15[/simple_tooltip]

John Coltrane’s wife was Rebecca Maxham/Muxom of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Maxham/Maxam/Moxom family originated in Rhode Island; it has not been possible to connect in the record the Massachusetts Maxhams to the Rhode Island family. There are many ETS matches to this family, but nearly all to the Rhode Island people. One match, however, shown in Cluster 6, ‘Karin-Aisha Pandelaki’[simple_tooltip content=’16. Online at www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/48826098 ‘Karen Munson Family Tree’ owner: Karin-Aisha Pandelaki; and references therein (accessed 13 Mar 2020).’]16[/simple_tooltip], was discovered which is descended from the Massachusetts family; the CA is Edmund Maxim, Rebecca’s father. This is additional support for the fact that ETS possesses Coltrin DNA and not New Hampshire Graham DNA—she has matches to the ancient (before 1750) Maxson/Maxon line, i. e. possible ancestors of Rebecca Maxham, wife of John Coltrane.

John’s origins (1738-1807) are a bit more shaky.  Some say (FamilySearch Family Tree) he was the son of Wm James Coltrane and Sarah Christie born ‘at sea’, but this has now been disproven by Y-DNA analysis.[simple_tooltip content=’17. Coltrin, Dorothy ‘Searching for the Coltrains’ W.I.S.E. Words, October, November, December 2012, p. 60-61’ and ‘Based on Biology, I Am No Longer a Coltrin’ W.I.S.E. Words, October, November, December 2020, p. 59-60’ both online at www.wise-fhs.org; W.I.S.E. Words is the Wales-Ireland-Scotland-England Family History Society Newsletter.  The 2012 article contains important and useful references to the early Coltraines.’]17[/simple_tooltip]  ‘At sea’ is a euphemism for born out of wedlock.  John Coltraine actually was the illegitimate son of Joseph or John Lane of Edgecombe County, North Carolina and an unnamed female Coltrain.  In an important FTDNA study, STR analysis of Y-DNA from several Coltrin sources were shown to not possess the Coltrin haplotype, but the Lane/Layne/Laine haplotype (see the Coltrin WISE Newsletter for more detail).

The Parents of Samuel Graham (1772-1832)

It has been established from Part 1 that Samuel’s parents were John and Hannah (Hunn) Graham.[simple_tooltip content=’29. The only way this could be consistent with all the data would be if George had another son beside Nathaniel I that had a son Nathaniel (II).

The Graham progenitors

The Graham line goes back another six generations to Scotland from Nancy Graham. There is some supporting DNA evidence shown in Cluster 8; matches ‘kccat5153’[simple_tooltip content=’69. Online at www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/73215088 ‘pickett’ owner: kccat5153 ; and references therein (accessed 13 Mar 2020).’]69[/simple_tooltip],[simple_tooltip content=’70. dau of Henry, d. 1684.’]70[/simple_tooltip] and Barbara Menke’[simple_tooltip content=’71. Online at www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/43481633 ‘Cuykendall Family Tree’ owner: BarbaraMenki; and references therein (accessed 13 Mar 2020). ‘]71[/simple_tooltip].

The eight children of John Graham (1737-after 1801) and Hannah Hunn have been mostly identified by other records beside Hannah’s will[simple_tooltip content=’72. Hannah Graham will: Connecticut Wills and Probate Records, 1609-1999, Hartford Probate Packets 132/1422, names all eight children; online at Ancestry (accessed 3 Apr 2020).’]72[/simple_tooltip] that names them all.

The eight do not include a Jesse Graham, who by DNA is an ancestor. He is a puzzle; he is, from the DNA evidence, a direct ancestor, but in the face of historical records and the number of cMs cannot be later in the line than John Graham/Hannah Hunn. See Cluster 9; ‘Darci Mays’[simple_tooltip content=’73. Online at www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/156620695 ‘Loveys Family Tree’ owner: Darci Mays ; and references therein (accessed 13 Mar 2020). ‘]73[/simple_tooltip],[simple_tooltip content=’74. P.’[simple_tooltip content=’77. BruceParker16 tree.’]77[/simple_tooltip], and ‘E. P.’[simple_tooltip content=’78. BruceParker16 tree.’]78[/simple_tooltip].

Since Jesse cannot be a child of John Graham/Hannah Hunn, the male children of Samuel Graham/Sarah Warren were examined as potential fathers of Jesse. Jesse’s father was identified as likely Benjamin Graham (1745-1813) of Middlesex County, Connecticut.

Complicating the matter is the fact that there are two Jesse Grahams: Jesse of Massachusetts was born 1760 to John and Jane Graham and died 1818 at Spencer, Worcester, Massachusetts. The parents John and Jane Graham do not appear to be part of the New Hampshire Graham family. John was born 1725 and died 17 mar 1776 (age 56); Jane Graham died 16 Mar 1808 (preceded in death by her husband). Children:[simple_tooltip content=’79. 51. Jacobus argues (Hale, House and Related Families, p. 11) that Nathaniel b. abt 1650 (died 1702, Wethersfield) married Rebecca Hale—w/o source. Massey provides evidence that Nathaniel b. abt 1650, d. 1677 married Priscilla Kitchen. Shared DNA evidence supports both contentions and there are two death dates and two groups of children, therefore there must be two individuals named Nathaniel Hunn b. abt 1650 (CA George Hunn, b. England).

61. Findagrave #24315831; Jacobus (Hale, House and Related Families, p. 12) is correct here and FamilySearch Tree wrong; Jacobus has Samuel b. 1672, which is consistent with death in 1738 (in his 67th year). In the Findagrave citation they have him b. 1664 and have recalculated death at 74yrs—which is incorrect, the stone says he died 1738 at age 67 (the correction suggested to Findagrave).
