The Hampshire Origins of the New England Terry Families
Richard L. Tolman, Ph. D.
Examination of the genealogical literature identifies SEVEN New England Terry families that emigrated from England in the early 17th century.1Henry K. Terry, The English Founders of the Terry Family (London: H. K. Terry, 1800), p. 2.; online at Ancestry.com’ hereafter English Founders,2Frank R. Holmes, Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families (New York: 1923, reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co.), p. ccxxxv. Note: Holmes and English Founders list only the first six; Thomas Terry of Freetown must be added as historical evidence exists that he was in Massachusetts In the early 1600’s and his presence cannot be accounted for in the genealogical record of the other six Terrys.,3Charles Henry Pope, The Pioneers of Massachusetts, online at books.google.com; lists four of these Terrys.
Below are listed the Terry immigrant founders of each of these seven families [I-VII]:
[I] Stephen Terry, of Dorchester, MA; immigrated 1630 on the Mary and John
[II] John Terry, of Windsor, MA; immigrated 1635 on the Abigail—32 yrs of age (may be a brother to Stephen)
[III] Samuel Terry, of Springfield, MA; immigrated 1650—18 yrs. of age.
[IV] Thomas Terry, of Freetown, MA and Block Island; immigrated before 1638.
[V] Thomas Terry, of Southold, NY; immigrated 1635 (28 yrs of age) on the James.
[VI] Robert Terry, of Flushing, NY; immigrated 1635 (25 yrs of age) on the James (brother to Thomas and Richard?).
[VII] Richard Terry, of Southold, NY; immigrated 1635 (17 yrs of age) on the James (brother to Thomas and Robert?).
Considering the time period of these immigrations, they have in common the establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony which was a product of the effort of the Massachusetts Bay Company, a joint-stock company that was granted a royal charter by King Charles I of England in 1629. The company’s purpose was to establish a colony in the New World, specifically in the region that would become known as Massachusetts Bay. The Massachusetts Bay Company was founded by a group of Puritan merchants and religious leaders, many of whom were seeking religious freedom and the ability to establish a community based on their own beliefs. The company’s charter granted them the right to govern and administer the colony as they saw fit, within the framework of English law.
There are more Terry immigrants to New England in this period than would be expected if one examines the surnames of New Englander immigrants in the 1600’s.4Martin E. Hollick, New Englanders in the 1600’s (Boston, Massachusetts: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2006). There is a reason for this: the Reverend John White/Whyte, M.A.5Michael Russell, ‘Rev. John White MA, Patriarch of Dorchester and Founder of Massachusetts’, online at www.opcdorset.org/fordingtondorset/Files/DorchesterRevJohnWhite 1575-1648.html; hereafter Russell,6Wikipedia, ‘John White (colonist priest)’. the ‘Patriarch of Dorchester, Massachusetts’. Whyte, the rector of Holy Trinity in Dorchester, Dorset (England), was a member of the Massachusetts Bay Company and was instrumental in obtaining the charter for the New England colony. He actively recruited Massachusetts immigrants which included from his extended family.
John’s sister was Mary White (1571-1637) who married abt 1591 John Terry the elder (1555-1625), the rector of Stockton in Wiltshire. John was born in Long Sutton, Hampshire, the son of Stephen Terry and Alice Cannar. Both rectors, John Whyte and John Terry, were strongly anti-Catholic and published tracts to support their views. They both believed that the solution to becoming a good Christian was to leave England to live in some isolation to practice their faith. John Whyte desired a colony in New England that could serve as a refuge for non-Separatist dissenters (which included the Puritans). These groups did not wish a separation from the Church of England but wished to remove the vestiges of Catholicism to make a simpler and more austere faith. John Whyte never traveled to America himself but recruited actively for those who would go to Massachusetts.7Ibid. The sailing of the Mary and John to Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony was his project; among the passengers was his nephew Stephen Terry [I], son of his sister Mary and John Terry. One of the next ships to sail for the Massachusetts Bay Colony was the Abigail (sailed 1635); her passenger list included John Terry [II] (thought by many to be a brother to Stephen and therefore another nephew of John Whyte).
John Whyte was baptized at Stanton St. John in Oxfordshire 6 Jan 1574/5 the son of John White Sr. and Isabel Bawle. A puritan divine, he was educated at New College Oxford (BA 1597) and was appointed rector of Holy Trinity & St. Peters (Dorchester, Dorset) in 1606; Whyte was considered a ‘moderate puritan’ relative to the Plantations governor John Endicott (he arrived on the Abigail). Also, in 1606 Whyte married Mary Burges who came from a strong puritan background; she bore him four sons. He died 21 Jul 1848 at Dorchester, Dorset after 43 years of service to the Dorchester church.8Russell.
It is not surprising that most or all the New England Terry families are part of one expansive British Terry family perhaps all descended from fourteenth century Hampshire tenant farmers. The puritan Rev. John Whyte (the ‘real founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony’ and brother-in-law of John Terry the elder) recruited his own family heavily for potential emigrants.
Identities of the Seven Terry New England Immigrants:
Below is an outline of the genealogy of the seven 16th century Terry immigrants.
[I] Stephen Terry of Dorchester—arrived on the Mary and John (b. 1608)9Justin P. Kellogg, Notes on some of the Descendants of Joseph Kellogg of Hadley (Washington, D. C.: L. C. Photoduplication Service, 1971) original publication Geneva, Switzerland, 1898; hereafter Kellogg; online at FamilySearch. according to Savage10James Savage, Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England (Boston, MA: Little, Brown and Co., 1862) pp. 268-270; hereafter Savage.. He was born and raised in Stockton, Wiltshire and married 13 Mar 1633/4 at Symondsbury, Dorsetshire (1) Jane Hardey, but lost her in death at Windsor, Connecticut 5 Jun 1647,11Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins; Immigrants to New England 1620-1633 (Boston: New England Genealogical Historical Society, 1996-2003) p. 1806 (V.3) and references cited therein; hereafter R. C. Anderson. vide infra (103). About 1660 he moved to Hadley, Massachusetts where he was a ‘first settler’ and became the first constable. He died in Sep. 1668 leaving a widow Elizabeth ____, a son John12Kellogg, pp. 8-9 and R. C. Anderson, p. 1895 (V.3); John married at Windsor, 27 Nov 1662. (b. 1638) and three daughters Mary (b. 1635), Elizabeth (b. 1641, and Abigail (b. 1646).13Kellogg, p . 9. The widow Elizabeth died 11 Aug 1683 at age 90. His son John had a large family (7 children, b 1663-1684).14Stephen Terry, Notes of Terry Families in the United States, mainly descended from Samuel, of Springfield, Mass., but including also some descended from Stephen, of Windsor, Conn., Thomas of Freetown, Mass. and others (Hartford, CT: S. Terry, 1887), p. 248-249; hereafter Stephen Terry Notes…. Stephen is likely the grandson of Stephen and Anne Cannar Terry of Long Sutton Hampshire and son of their son John the Elder 85.
[II] John Terry—exists in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut according to Savage15Savage suggests John may be a brother to Stephen. (age 32, therefore b. abt 1607), when he immigrated from London in 1635. He is listed in the Abigail passenger list as ‘Jo’ Terry (Joseph16Joseph Terry, U. S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s, The Abigail Passenger List, 1635: Jo age 32 (b. 1603); online at Ancestry.,17Samuel G. Drake The Founders of New England… (Boston: FamilySearch International, 1865) p. 48; Abigail Passenger List, July 1635: Jo Terry, age 32 (b. 1603); online at FamilySearch.,18Charles Edward Banks The Planters of the Commonwealth in Massachusetts 1620-1640; Joseph Terry, age 32 (b. 1603) no origin information; online at Ancestry. or John). There are no records in Goodwin19Nathaniel Goodwin, Genealogical Notes…First Settlers of Connecticut and Massachusetts (Hartford: F. A. Brown, 1856), pp. 221-3. or Stiles20Henry R. Stiles, History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut, Vol. II (Hartford: Case, Lockwood, and Brainard Co., 1892), 750-1.. All Windsor references to a John Terry relate to Stephen’s son, b. 1638; there are no records at all for ‘Joseph’. Stephen Terry [I] did have a brother John 101, b. abt 1603, who generated no records in Wiltshire after 1635 making him the most obvious choice for [II] (Occam’s razor)21There are deaths reported of a John Terry (30 Apr 1691) and Mary (Margaret?) Terry (25 Feb 1700) of Granby (adjacent and NW of Windsor), Hartford, Connecticut; Barbour Collection: Connecticut Vital Records Prior to 1850, online at FamilySearch..
Alternatively, it is possible that he is the John Terry (son of John Terry 92 and Elizabeth Gale Pierpoynt Terry b. 1598) who may have sailed on the Abigail in 1635.22English Founders, p. 12, 34-35. Although, Paul Terry Thompson in his book All About Terrys purports that this John Terry 92 (m. Mary) with his brothers Stephen and Thomas emigrated to York County, Virginia.23Paul Terry Thompson All About Terrys: A Genealogy of the surname Terry 1630-1860 (Turlock California: P. T. Thompson, 1990)—this theory is disproved, vide infra.
[III] Samuel Terry of Springfield,24John M. Doubleday, Our Ancestors: Samuel Terry, et al. (Caldwell, KS: J. M. Doubleday, 1924), p. 2,3.24. was a farmer and weaver, b. 163225Savage, p. 269. and died 2 Jan 1731 at Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut, buried in the Springfield Cemetery, Hampden, Massachusetts.26Findagrave Index #112063577, Samuel L. Terry Sr., Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts; lists birth in 1632, Barnet, Greater London, England, spouse Ann Terry, nice bio. The first record of him is his apprenticeship to Benjamin Cooly, weaver in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1650.27Stephen Terry Notes…, pp. 1-14; although this is an excellent unsourced American genealogy, the author is most thorough on the descendants of Samuel Terry [III]; he also has chapters on the Putnam County, NY Terrys and the Williamsburg Terrys which he intimates are probable descendants of Samuel Terry. He was indentured in England by Mr. Pynchon, and was said to be ‘of Barnet’, a borough of North London that includes Totteridge—this would make him a descendant (grandson) of John Terry the Younger 92, a goldsmith of that place.28Ibid.,29Henry Terry of English Founders opines (p. 36) he was a son of John Terry’s son William (123). He married (1) Anne Lobdell (1634-1684),30Findagrave Index #144488146, buried next to her husband Samuel at Springfieldl Cemetery. nine children; their oldest son was born 1661 and was also named (Capt.) Samuel. He married (2) 19 Nov 1690 Sarah Blisse Scott.
[IV] Lieutenant Thomas Terry of Freetown31Stephen Terry Notes…, p. 264-265. (Bristol County) Massachusetts. Of England, he first appears in Braintree, MA and in quarter court in Boston Dec 4, 1638.32It is not clear whether this Thomas Terry was the one who went to Block Island and eventually to Freeport or whether he was the Thomas Terry who arrived on the James and was on his way to Southold, Long Island. He bought land on Block Island 1660 and was made a freeman of Rhode Island in 1664 and was a deputy in the General Court of Block Island in 1665. He participated in obtaining a township charter for Block Island in 1672 and was active there during Phillip’s War. He then removed to Freetown33Gary B. Roberts, Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol. II (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1989), p. 324. where he was one of the first board of selectmen of Freetown, Massachusetts, elected Jun 2, 1685, and was reelected 1686-1690. In 1689 he was the largest taxpayer in Freetown; died in Freetown in 1702. He was married to Ann ____ (she died in Freetown in 1704); three sons: (1) Thomas (born abt 1675) married 4 Jan 1699/1700 Abigail Dean (he was elected assessor in 1704, he became a selectman in 1705, and a lieutenant in the Freetown militia in 1715) and died in 1757; (2) John, md 3 Apr 1705 Remember Harrow, dau of John; and (3) Benjamin md. Margaret ____. Considering all this, he was probably born abt 1620.
Some authors believe Thomas, son of Samuel [III] and Thomas [VII] are the same individual.34William P. Sheffield, Historical Sketch of Block Island (Newport, RI: J. P. Sanborn & Co., 1876), p. 58. This is unlikely considering the great disparity in their birthyears; Thomas of Freetown was made a Freeman of Rhode Island the year Thomas, son of Samuel [III] was born. Similarly, the Thomas of Southold (b. 1607) would seem to be too old to be the Thomas of Freehold who was having children in the 1670’s.35Gary B. Roberts, Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol. II (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1989), p. 324; Roberts uses the word ‘perhaps’, but to my mind clearly not. After examining the evidence it is quite clear that these three Thomas Terrys and Thomas Terry of Bucks are four separate persons:
(1) Thomas of Freetown (d. 1702) was married to Ann, Thomas of Southold (d. 1672) was married to Marie, Thomas of Springfield married Mary in 1687 and Thomas of Bucks (d. 1703) was married to (Sarah).
(2) Thomas of Freetown, Thomas of Springfield, and Thomas of Southold were all generating records that would indicate they spent most of their time in their respective towns.
(3) Their available wills acknowledge only the children born in that particular jurisdiction.
[V, VI, VII] Thomas, Robert, and Richard Terry (brothers?) came from London36‘Founders of New England’ The Register, Vol 14, p. 321 (1860). in 1635 on the James and two of them (Thomas and Richard) settled in Southold, NY (Long Island).37Savage. The third, Robert Terry, went to Flushing, NY; he had at least two children one of whom has been proven38Richard L. Tolman ‘Robert Terry of Flushing, New York’; online at www.29deadpeople.com; this essay provides DNA evidence that Thomas Terry of Bucks’ mother was Sarah Farrington, wife of Robert Terry.,39The Y-DNA evidence on www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/terry indicates the three brother’s Y-DNA is I-haplotype (Parshall Terry ancestors). (by DNA) to be ‘Thomas Terry of Bucks’.
All that is known of the ‘brothers’ is their age at emigration40The James Passenger List, 1635: Thomas age 28 (b. 1607), Robert age 25 (b. 1610), and Richard age 17 (b. 1618); online at www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/james1635.shtml. and that they were unmarried in 1635 (spouses would be listed in the passenger list). They are only presumed to be brothers and are claimed by contemporary Terry researchers to have originated from Hampshire (Long Sutton); however, the record states only that they sailed from London.41Stuart T. Terry, Genealogy of the Terry Family, unpublished ms from the New York Public Library; filmed by FamilySearch in 1939, 9061758 (image 55/277); states only that the brothers came from England. Exhaustive search of the English parish registers for ter*/tyr* has failed to identify a family with three sons with appropriate birthyears. We therefore are forced to presume the three young men are not of the same family. There are many ‘Thomases’ but comparatively few ‘Roberts’ and ‘Richards’. Aguayo42Marla Aguayo; ‘Marla’s ‘Terry’ Family Research: Information about Richard Terry’, online at www.genealogy.com/ftm/a/g/u/Marla_Aguayo-AZ/WEBSITE-0001.html (accessed 19 May 2023); hereafter Aguayo. and Chambers43George J. Chambers ‘Descendants of Stephen and Alice (CONNOR) Terry of England’, online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyterry/otherterrys/step_alice.html; a good genealogy strong in the American area, has big problems in the British section, cites Kellogg but does not use him; hereafter Chambers. claim the brothers are sons of James (88) and Anne (Peacocke) Terry of Long Sutton; this is untenable as their sons Thomas and Robert were having children in Hampshire at the time of the voyage of the James vide infra.44It is remotely possible that James and Anne’s son Richard (110, b. 1609) was one of the immigrants (b. 1618 according to the Passenger List). Other Long Sutton Hampshire Terry families (Thomas 91 and Joan) have been considered as sources of the three brothers and ruled out (cf Bogner); there are no matches for the three emigrants in the Hampshire Baptism Index. Bogner45Stephen Bogner ‘Re: Found Info: the Terry Brothers in 1635’; online at www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/terry/7269 and www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/terry/7276; he argues that the three brothers are not children of James and Anne (no citations) and confirms Thomas (91) and Joan Terry family makeup from the book Hydegate & its People.; hereafter Bogner1-2.,46Steven Bogner ‘Re: Richard Terry’; he believes the brothers came from Throwley, Kent; online at www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/terry/7377; hereafter Bogner3. maintains that there is no proof that the three brothers come from Hampshire at all and favors a Terry family in Throwley, Kent.
The other genealogical possibilities of the three Terry emigrants will now be separately considered including surveys of the English parish registers. According to ChatGPT47ChatGPT: www.chatgpt.com. historians estimate that 70-85% of the English population were represented in the 17th century Anglican parish registers. For the Terry family the percentage may be somewhat higher as they were known to be not Catholic and one of the major motivations for emigration was freedom to practice their (Anglican) religion. Thomas [V] and Richard [VII] routinely had the Anglican baptisms of their children recorded; Robert [VI] did not.
Thomas Terry [V] of Southold, Suffolk, Long Island, New York.
Parish Register Survey: There is a son Thomas Terry b. 160748England Deaths and Burials 1538-1991; online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J8S6-Y2K. at Throwley,Kent (no parent listed)—also two Thomas Terry deaths in Kent before 1625, but there is no Robert or Richard Terry in the Throwley, Kent records. For a Thomas Terry b. 1607 there are however other possibilities: (1) Thomas Terre (father William) of St. Clement, Eastcheap, City of London, baptized 26 Feb 160849London Metropolitan Archives, London, England; London Church of England Parish Registers, Ref. No. P69/Cle/A/001/Ms04783; online at Ancestry.; (2) Thomas Terry (father Rogeri) of Wensley, Yorkshire baptized 16 Jan 1606(7)50England Births and Christenings 1538-1975 online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3L5-G5S.; (3) Thomas Terrell (father Richard or Thomas51Surrey, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials 1538-1812, image 16/109; online at Ancestry.) of Dorking (Newdigate, St. Peter), Surrey christened 8 Jan 160852England Births and Christenings 1538-1975 online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NPYG-52X. and a (4) Thomas Tery (father Gabriel) of Eastling, Kent christened 6 Apr 160653England Births and Christenings 1538-1975 online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJMG-6LS. (this Thomas is probably the one who was buried54England Deaths and Burials 1538-1991 online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JC1F-5JZ. in Favershaw, Kent—close to Eastling—in 1620).
There seems to be no reason to prefer the Throwley Thomas over alternatives (1)—(3).
Robert Terry [VI] of Flushing, Queens, New York.
Parish Register Survey: Searches of the parish registers For Robert b. 1609-1611 identified three possibilities: (1) Robert Terry of East Grinstead, Sussex55England Births and Christenings 1539-1988; online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:DF6Z-7ZT2. son of Robert Terry (no prospective marriages or early deaths). (2) Robert Tery of Eastling, Kent56England Births and Christenings 1539-1988; online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J7G7-HN1. son of Robert Terry (no prospective marriages or early deaths) and (3) Robert Terry of Dewsbury, York57England, Yorkshire Bishop’s Transcripts 1547-1957; online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6827-3FJ5. son of Parcivall Terry. He likely married Mary Barry in 1634 at York. No (3) is out because he was probably married at the time of the sailing of the James and (1) and (2) are possibles but not compelling.
We note that there is a Clement58There is no mention of a Clement Terry (male; the female form of the name is Clemence) in English records before 1700 (Ancestry, FamilySearch) other than the Clement Terry of Crondall. Terry (b. abt 1530) of Crondall, Hampshire (a very unusual forename) who has a namesake in a son Clement of Robert Terry’s son Thomas Terry of Bucks (b. 1653). This is strong encouragement that Robert Terry the emigrant may have come from Hampshire.
Richard Terry [VII] of Southold, Suffolk, Long Island, New York.
Parish Register Survey: Bogner59Bogner3. claims a Richard Terry was born 1618 in Throwley, Kent to Thomas and Joan Binge Terry, but there are no parish records or any other records to confirm this. Also, the existence of this Throwley couple or their marriage cannot be confirmed from the historical records of Kent. There is a Richard Terry born 1617 in Molash, Kent and a death60England Deaths and Burials 1538-1991; online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J8S6-Y2K. of Richard Terry in 1619 at Molash also.
From the parish registers there are other possibilities: (1) Richard Tery son of Walter and Margaret Tery christened61England, Somerset Church Registers 1501-1999; online at FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6D9F-WRTS. 14 Feb 1618 at Tickenham, Somerset and (2) Richard Terry son of John christened62England, Middlesex Parish Registers 1539-1988; online at FamilySearch no image, and London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials 1538-1812, image 364/572; online at Ancestry. 12 Oct 1617 at Middlesex (Hackney, St. Leonard, Shoreditch, London), England. This Richard (2) is the son of John Terry (124), grandson of John Terry the Younger (92) based on the reported parentage and christening dates; therefore, tentatively identified as [VII].
Could it be significant that two of the three Terry emigrants remained together in Southold, Long Island? —Perhaps Thomas and Richard were more closely related or knew each other before sailing on the James. Among the possibilities considered above, there is a Thomas and a Richard both baptized in London—one at St. Leonard, Shoreditch [Richard (2)] and the other at St. Clement, Eastcheap [Thomas (1)]. The churches are actually close together in central London—one east of the Tower of London and the other north of same.
Hampshire Origins of the Terry Family:
The Stockton, Wilshire Rector John Terry was born in Long Sutton, Hampshire and most of the Terrys in this essay have their origins in Hampshire in or near Long Sutton. In Hampshire they were tenant farmers on the Crondall Hundred. The term ‘Hundred’ dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period and was a geographic division of land typically containing about one hundred households encompassing many settlements and parishes.
During the Elizabethan era the monarch owned all the land (divided into Hundreds—rents were administered by the Church). Nobility and wealthy landowners held their land through freehold tenure, which meant they owned their land outright. Tenant farmers held their land through copyhold tenure. Copyhold tenants had rights to work and live on the land, but they had certain obligations to the landowner and had limited control over the property. In the 16th century feudal system primogeniture was the common practice; the eldest son inherited the majority of the land, while younger sons sometimes received smaller land portions or had the option of the Church or the army. Daughters usually did not inherit land but could receive dowries or be married off to landowning families. Frequently mentioned in land documents of the time is a heriot—a tribute or feudal duty paid to the landlord after the death of a tenant consisting of a horse or other live animal or other belongings of the decedent. In order to transfer a copyhold tenancy, the tenant surrendered the tenancy to his will which then could name the inheritor of the tenancy.63Coldicott, p. 11. A yeoman is a farmer, and a husbandman is a lower rank of farmer. The Crondall Hundred of extreme northeast Hampshire, was land bequeathed by Alfred the Great to his son Eltham in 885, later tenanted by Elizabeth the First and divided into manors; the steward landowner administered the tenancies on behalf of the ‘monks of St. Swithen’ and later the Winchester Cathedral.64Wikipedia online, search: Crondall.
Sources for the Ancient Terrys
There are few sources from the ancient time period. The Hampshire Parish registers begin abt 1537; relevant 16th century parishes65Hampshire Genealogical Society Marriage Index (1538-1659, 1 CD HCD013), data abstracted from Parish Registers, and similarly from the same source the Baptism Index (1537-1659, 1 CD HCD015) 1and the Burial Index (1400-1841, 1 CD HCD011); hereafter Hampshire Marriage Index, Hampshire Baptism Index and the Hampshire Burial Index, respectively. in the area are: the Long Sutton Parish, the South Warnborough Parish (2 mi W of Long Sutton), and the Crondall Parish (4 mi NE of Long Sutton). Also generating records in the 16th century, but further removed from Long Sutton are Odiham Parish (NW) and Upton Grey Parish (W). South Warnborough, Odiham, and Upton had no Terry burials before 1650. Robert Terry b. 1490 and his family (and son Richard) were in Long Sutton and John Terry (and son John) and his family were in Crokeham (Crookham)/Crondall parish.
Map of the Long Sutton area of northeastern Hampshire.66From Coldicott.
Land records are outlined in the Crondal Customary of 156767Francis Joseph Baigent A Collection of Records and Documents Relating to the Hundred and Manor of Crondal… (London: Simpkin & Co., 1891) pp. 228-233, 359-373, and 374-383; online at archive.org; hereafter Crondal Customary of 1567. that lists the tenants of the Crondall Hundred. There are many difficult-to-read wills which provide some genealogical detail. The Long Sutton wills are excellently summarized in a book by Diane Coldicott68Diane K. Coldicott A Long Sutton miscellany: including a study of the wills (1502-1709) and probate inventories (1558-1709) from the parish of Long Sutton and Well, Hampshire (London: D. K. Coldicott, 1979); an excellent, detailed review of early Long Sutton wills, beginning in 1502; hereafter Coldicott. and other wills of the Crondall Hundred and excerpts69Hampshire Will Extracts, Series J, Probate Court of the Archdeacon of Winchester, FHL Films 1145,951-1145,956; online at FamilySearch. of same are available on FamilySearch. Justin Kellogg wrote a genealogical history (published Geneva, Switzerland in 1898) and it included a chapter70Kellogg p. 32-37. on the ‘Terry Family of the Manor of Crondal’. There is a description of Kellogg’s visit to the Public Record Office in Chancery Lane, London where he notes from the Court Rolls a line of Terrys going back to 1426. According to Kellogg the sequence of Terry tenants of land (Long Sutton) is as follows: October 1426 John Terry, 16 October 1431 John Terry, 20 May 1432 John Terry, 7 May 1487 Thomas Terry, 3 April 1494 Thomas Terry, 22 October 1510 Robert Terry/Thomas Terry/John Terry, 29 April 1511 John Terry, 10 October 1516 Robert Terry/Thomas Terry/John Terry, 21 April 1517 Richard Terry, 4 October 1529 Thomas Terry/Richard Terry. Unfortunately, it is not that simple to trace the Terry lineage as there are many Terry tenants in the Crondall Hundred. Beside the Crondal Customary, a transcription of an accompanying document is useful—called the Baigent Crondal Records: Documents and Records Relating to the Hundred and Manor of Crondal in Hampshire (part 6), pp. 258-383.71Online at www.yateleylocalhistory.pbworks.com/f/DocumentsAndRecordspart6.html; hereafter Yateleylocalhistory.
In the Crondal Customary dated 10 October 1567 the Long Sutton tenancy was transferred from Richard Terry to his son (brother?)72Kellogg (p. 33) has Stephen a brother of Richard although there are no dates in the Robert Terry will to support this; it is inconsistent with baptism records in the Hampshire Baptism Index. He has also confused Richard, son of Robert with Richard, son of Stephen who became the rector of Saham-Toney, Walton, Norfolk. Stephen as well as the lands of a William Terry. Richard is the oldest of the four children of Robert Terry.73Will of Robert Terry of Long Sutton, dated 19 Feb 1576/7 and proved 18 Apr 1577, mentions four children; reviewed by Coldicott. Witness the confusion abt the Robert and Richard Terrys in the genealogical literature. It appears that the Terrys (5, Richard, b. abt 1460) first moved to Long Sutton from Crokeham (Crondall Hundred) before 1500. Examination of the available wills of the period it seems that the Terrys lived first in the 15th century in Farnham, Surrey (many of the later Terry burials were returned to the Farnham cemetery). Later the Terrys moved to Bramley, Hampshire briefly before settling in Crookham, Crondall Hundred and then a branch of the family went to nearby Long Sutton, Hampshire in the mid-16th century. The latter part of this essay is an attempted reconstruction of the Terry genealogy in Hampshire using primarily the 20,000 Old English Hampshire wills of the time period.
There are a lot of Terrys in the Crondall hundred and many different spellings in the records from Terrye to Tyr. Notable are a Richard Tyrrie, a John Terie and a Clement74A descendant of Richard Terry, Thomas Terry of Bucks b. 1653, named a son Clement; see Richard L. Tolman ‘Five Generations of the Terry Family of Bucks County Pennsylvania’, online at www.29deadpeople.com. Tyrry, who lived in Crondall parish; they are contemporaries (sibs or cousins?) of the children of Richard Terry (13). In the 16th century the Ancient Terrys seem to be bifurcated into groups: the Long Sutton bunch and the Crondall/Crokeham/Crookham group. The people of this time had the annoying tendency to give the same name to more than one child and to use the same few names over and over again to add to the genealogist’s confusion.
The Crondal Customary of 1567 lists the tenants of the Crondall Hundred. Below are excerpted all those with the Terry surname.75Crondal Customary of 1567, pp. 275-383.

84. John Terry the Elder [#2] (Stephen4Richard3Robert2Richard1)210Stephen Wright, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2003-2014) search ‘John Terry’; and online at www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/27149 (accessed 10 Feb 2014). born abt 1565, died 10 May 1625 (age 70) at Stockton, Wiltshire. He entered Winchester College in 1572 (age 14) and graduated Oxford with MA 1582. He was the Rector of Stockton, Wiltshire from 1589 until his death and was very antipathetic to Roman Catholicism. James Terry (Stephen4Richard3Robert2Richard1) christened225Hampshire Baptism Index; Long Sutton Parish, son of ‘Stephen and Alice’. 12 Aug 1567 at Long Sutton, Hampshire and died 1622.226This author cannot confirm death year or place in Dorset (from Cotswan). He married abt 1590 Alce Anne Peacocke daughter of Elizabeth Peacocke.227Anne is mentioned in her mother Elizabeth Peacocke’s will dated 27 Jul 1620, proved 17 Mar 1622 [cf. The Register, Vol 53 (1899), pp. 17-8—from Genealogical Gleanings in England.]. He was a pewterer228Mentioned in the 1625 Will of John Terry (the Elder) (as John’s brother). in London.2291650 Will of ‘Elizabeth Terrey of Bushey; ‘my brother-in-law James Terrey and to my sister-in law his wife’.
James and Alce Anne (Peacocke) Terry had ten or more children.230Aguayo and Chambers (and others, Pedigree Resource File on FamilySearch) target this family as the source of the three Terry brothers (Thomas, Robert, and Richard) who settled Southold Long Island.
The New England immigrant ‘brothers’ [V, VI, VII] are not the sons of this couple as their birthdates are wrong. In particular, the son Richard is too old (b. 1609) to be the immigrant Richard (b. 1618). There is evidence that Thomas and Robert were in England having children after 1635 vide supra.
103 i. JAMES TERRY born abt 1590 of Long Sutton, Hampshire and died 231England Deaths and Burials 1538-1991; online at FamilySearch; https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JZBX-PMJ. 2 Mar 1694 at Hampshire (Dorset and Hampshire Qm). 104 ii. WILLIAM TERRY of Long Sutton, Hampshire born abt 1592.
105 iii. ELIZABETH TERRY of Long Sutton, Hampshire.233Mentioned in her grandmother Elizabeth Peacocke’s will dated 27 Jul 1620, proved 17 Mar 1622 [cf. The Register, Vol 53 (1899), pp. 17-8—from Genealogical Gleanings in England].
106 iv. SUSANNA TERRY of Long Sutton, Hampshire. She married234Hyndes/Terry marriage: Hampshire Marriage Index and Phillimore Marriage Registers 1531-1812, Crondall Parish, online at Find My Past. 11 Jan 1611 at Crondall Parish Robert Hyndes.
+ 107 v. THOMAS TERRY of Long Sutton, Hampshire.235Aguayo has these three brothers (19,20,21) as the ones who emigrated to Southold, Long Island, but this is very unlikely as their father would have been in his fifties at the birth of Thomas and in his seventies at the birth of Richard. He likely married236Terrie/Smith marriage: Hampshire Marriage Index at Ovington. 24 Jun 1620 at Upton Grey, Hampshire Susan Smith.
+ 108 vi. ROBERT/ROBARTE TERRY christened 23 Aug 1605 at Long Sutton, Hampshire. He married 4 Jul 1631 at Long Sutton, Hampshire Elizabeth Beaglee.

No will for Thomas Terry d. 1655 in Coldicott. He married241Terry/Waterfield marriage: Marriages at Long Sutton, 1561-1812, Church of England Parish Records of Long Sutton (Hampshire), FHL Book 942.27 K29, p. 2. 20 Jul 1596 at Long Sutton, Hampshire Johan Waterfield/Wotersfield. She was born abt 1575 and died 1659 at Long Sutton, Hampshire.242Cotswan and references therein. This family also cannot be the origin of the three brothers: Thomas has the wrong birthyear; Robert (b. 1610) coincident with the birth of their son James; and there is no son Richard.
Thomas and Johan Terry had nine children:243Ibid. ,244Steven Bogner ‘Re: Found info: The Terry Brothers in 1635’, online at www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/terry7276; confirms the Thomas Terry family makeup (with birthyears) from the book Hydegate & its People; hereafter Bogner2.

117 v. THOMAS TERRY christened249Hampshire Baptism Index; Long Sutton Parish, son of ‘Thomas and Johan Tyrrye’. 18 Mar 1603/4 at Long Sutton, Hampshire. Possibly [V] b. 1607.250Bogner2; but Hydegate & its People confirms the birthyear of Thomas in 1603.
118 vi. JOHN TERRY christened251Hampshire Baptism Index; Long Sutton Parish, son of ‘Thomas and Joane Tyrrye’. 19 Feb 1605/6 at Long Sutton, Hampshire. He likely married252Terry/Urlen marriage: Hampshire Marriage Index at Long Sutton. 26 Dec 1638 at Long Sutton Agnis Urlen.
