The Swank Family: Part 2

Origins and Descendency of George Swank (b. 1844) of Muskingum County Ohio

By Richard L. Tolman, Ph. D.

The Swank name is German[simple_tooltip content=’1. `Township Histories of Muskingum County, Ohio: Washington Township` online at www.heritagepursuit/Muskingum/Muskingum1882-371Washington.htm (accessed 15 Sep 2009).’]1[/simple_tooltip] in origin (likely Schwenck) and is suggested[simple_tooltip content=’2. Bohn, Philip `Swank, George d. March 13, 1841` online at http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/swank/151 (accessed 12 Dec 2015).’]2[/simple_tooltip] to have descended from Hessian mercenaries hired by George III of England during the Revolutionary War who stayed in the Americas.

There are few references to the George Swank of Muskingum County born in 1844, (Civil War soldier No. 1 in Part 1). He is found as a 6 yr old in the 1850 Census[simple_tooltip content=’3. 1850 U. S. Census of Jefferson, Muskingum, Ohio, M432_717, Page 155B, Image 184, Household 1908; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 10 Dec 2015).’]3[/simple_tooltip] with his family (George and Margaret) in Jefferson, Muskingum, Ohio. Here the father George (1812-1888) is living with his second wife (Margaret Moore); he had eventually three wives and had children with all three.[simple_tooltip content=’4. `Shirley Gates, SWANK, Viola (?-1901) om KS`, online at Swank Message Board (http://boards.Ancestry.com/surnames.swank/94.110/mb.ashx).’]4[/simple_tooltip]

There is an unresolved problem with the parentage of the father George Swank (1812-1888). The 1820 census of Muskingum County lists only two Swanks, George Senior and George Junior (both of Virginia)—and both have been ruled out as parents of our George.[simple_tooltip content=’5. George Swank Senior (1765-1841) of Loudoun County, Virginia is the father of George Swank Junior (1791-1881) and the 1820 census showed George Junior had only daughters in 1820 (our George b. 1812).’]5[/simple_tooltip] The 1810 census shows no Swanks, but the censuses of all Ohio counties were all lost except Washington County.[simple_tooltip content=’6. Thorndale, W. and W. Dollarhide Map Guide to the U. S. Federal Censuses 1790-1920 (Baltimore, OH: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1987) p. 269.’]6[/simple_tooltip]

We know that George’s first wife was Anna (Hurdle) Powers.[simple_tooltip content=’7. Swank/Powers marriage: Ohio Marriages, 1800-1958, FHL Film 901,164; online at FamilySearch (accessed 20 Jan 2016).’]7[/simple_tooltip] It is this ‘Hurdle’ name that allows us to connect him with a brother Lemuel (b. 1804), also of Muskingum County, Ohio. There is a biography of Lemuel’s son J. T. in the Blair History of Johnson County Kansas[simple_tooltip content=’8. Blair, Ed `J. T. Swank of Olathe` History of Johnson County, Kansas (Lawrence, Kansas: Standard Publishing Co., 1915) pp.437-8; hereafter Blair`s Johnson County.’]8[/simple_tooltip] which states that Lemuel was born at sea as his parents were immigrating from Germany; he was raised as an orphan by a woman named Hurdle (no sources for any of this and nothing has been able to be independently confirmed). Add to this the claim by Shirley Gates (note 4) and others that George (1812-1888) was the son of Peter and Nancy (Powell) Swank.[simple_tooltip content=’9. cf. `McIntosh Family Tree`, owner SarahMcIntosh77, tree 2661527; online at trees.Ancestry.com (accessed 10 Dec 2015).’]9[/simple_tooltip] The foregoing Gates reference (note 4) has proven accurate in all testable claims, but the author has not found any supporting reference for THIS claim. Peter Swank died early (1813) but his widow Nancy lived on (until 1852) in Muskingum County Ohio and is found in the 1850 census in Adams Twp (Adamsville, Muskingum, Ohio) with an unmarried daughter Polly. Gates and others have found other sibs as well, children of Peter and Nancy. Obviously, Peter and Nancy (Powell) Swank did not come directly from Germany; Nancy and their first son Jacob were born in Virginia (see 1850 census for Joseph and all refs for Nancy Powell)—additionally Powell is a Welsh name. Lemuel and George Swank are listed here as sons of Peter and Nancy Swank for convenience only; the birth-dates fit nicely into the family. That their parents could have come directly from Germany/Switzerland as is suggested in the J. T. Swank bio in Blair’s History of Johnson County (Kansas), cannot absolutely be ruled out.

Other genealogical workers have similarly taken sides, cf. Marj Aler[simple_tooltip content=’10. `Aler and Perry Family of Ohio`, owner marjaler, online at trees.Ancestry.com/tree/15290380; (accessed 29 Jul 2016).’]10[/simple_tooltip] (direct from Germany) and Shirley Gates/Sarah McIntosh[simple_tooltip content=’11. See citation 14,15 below.’]11[/simple_tooltip] (Peter/Nancy). These references all refer to the Lemuel Swank line. So, in summary, we have no real paper sources for the existence of Peter Swank in Ohio but have still managed to piece together a family for Peter and Nancy (Powell) Swank. Despite the paucity of records, a fairly convincing case for this Swank family has been found. The family apparently originated in Virginia (Nancy and her oldest son Jacob was born in Virginia) and moved to Muskingum County, Ohio around 1800. No less than three of Peter’s children (Jacob, Joseph, and Catherine) named daughters Malinda (Malissa), an uncommon name in early 19th century, which is additional evidence that the sibs belong to the same family. It is likely that we will discover someday a Malinda among the ancestors of Peter and Nancy.

One could posit that there are two families here—Jacob, Margaret, Polly, Joseph, Catherine—children of Peter and Nancy as one family and Lemuel and George, children of unknown German immigrants as the second family. BUT the Robert Swank History[simple_tooltip content=’12. Holmes, Edith Swank, related to her by her gf Robert Swank (contributed by JuanitaEdlen80), `The George Swank Family Move to Iowa` Cf `McIntosh Family Tree`, online at person.Ancestry.com/tree/2661527/person/-1821378578/gallery?_phtarg=lrU13 (George Swank), see Note 57; hereafter Robt Swank History.’]12[/simple_tooltip] (Robert was a son of George (1812-1888) who dictated this history to his gdau some years before his death at 98 years) states that when his father George first moved to Iowa he stayed for a time at his brother Joseph’s home on land at the fork of the Cedar and Iowa Rivers in Iowa. Therefore they must be one family.

They raised a family in Noble County, Indiana. The family may have moved to Noble County, Indiana because of the presence there of Mary’s sister, Jane Larrison who had also married a Swank, George Swank (of Muskingum County, Ohio), a cousin?
