Part II: Antecedents of Jesse Anson (w/Y-DNA Analysis)

This essay describes the family life, origins and two generations of descendants of Jesse Anson and Maria L. Sands of Delaware County, New York. Both of these individuals came from American colonial families and had the misfortune (from a genealogical point of view) of being raised in one of the most difficult time periods for New York county records. For this reason there exists much speculative and incorrect published information about the couple, their contemporary relatives and their origins. It is our purpose to provide documentation for that which is actually known.

Part I describes the descendants (three generations) of Jesse and Maria (Sands) Anson; Part II and Part III describe the ancestry of Jesse Anson and then Maria Sands, respectively.

Origins of Jesse Anson

We already know that Jesse came¹ from American colonial stock with mother born in New York and father born in Connecticut.²,³ From the biographical sketch published by the Stevens Point (Wisconsin) Genealogical Society and his obituary, we know that he was orphaned when he was about age 14 (1834-35), that both parents died within a month of one another, and that he was one of eleven children (3 boys and 8 girls). Consider for a moment a geographic timeline for Jesse’s father from this information: born before 1800 somewhere in Connecticut, resided in Delaware County NY in 1820 (Jesse’s birth), and moved somewhere else to die in NY abt 1834.

Assuming Jesse and his family were in New York State four years before the death of the parents, the census records were examined (Jesse was 10 in 1830). There were 30 Anson families in the 1830 census of New York State. Nine of these Anson families (same forename and place) are ALSO in the 1840 U. S. Census and can therefore be eliminated as possible parents of Jesse. Of the remaining 21 Anson families, 14 can be eliminated as their households were judged to be too small for a family of 13 {households with 5 or less individuals (parents plus 3 children) were considered unlikely to be Jesse’s family}. This leaves 7 Anson families. Three of the remaining could be eliminated by examining the Agricultural schedules in 1860 or 1880 and finding the fathers still alive. Two others had too many males and not enough females in their households. None of these Ansons were in Delaware County for the 1820 Census. Two left: one of these, a Rev. William Anson was one of the original settlers⁴ of Peru, Clinton Co., New York in abt 1805 and apparently stayed there (he was in Peru in the 1820 census). This left only Job Anson of Cuba, Allegany Co. (1830 household of 9).⁵ Coincidentally, Job was the ONLY Anson in Delaware County for the 1820 census (he was also there in 1810)⁶; he later removed in 1823⁷ to Cuba, Allegany County. He died intestate 19 Oct 1835⁸ and his wife Charlotte died before 8 Feb 1836, when their son Asa H. Anson returned from Illinois to petition the Allegany County court to administer the estate.⁹ This must be Jesse’s family.

This provides additional corroboration of Job as Jesse’s father as it is in agreement with the Wisconsin biography details provided by Jesse’s family or Jesse himself. It is noteworthy (see below) that Job had a brother Leonard, who also lived in Cuba. It is also noteworthy that Jesse named his oldest son and daughter Leonard and Julia after members of this family.

Job Anson was born in Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, but the Ansons have been traced¹⁰ back to England {immigrant: John Austen (abt 1640-1673); they were among the original settlers of Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut}. The Austens are claimed on pretty shaky evidence¹¹ to be descended from William Austen, Esq. of Lincoln’s Inn, an eminent barrister in the reign of James I, the owner of the mansion at Shuzsborough, Stafford.

The family surname was Austin/Austen/Astin until Jonathan Austin (1680-1769)¹² had five sons: Jonathan (1712), Silas (abt 1720), John (abt 1728), Levinus (abt 1730), and Job (abt 1733).(see Moore, Edith Austin ‘John Austin of Greenwich, Connecticut’ (typescript, 353 p. at New York Public Library); filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Film 858668, item 2). At the time of the American revolution, a son of John (nephew Samuel Austin) was a Loyalist; his property was confiscated in 1779.¹³,¹⁴ Silas and Levinus (who lived at that time in Dutchess County) were patriots and changed their name to ‘Anson’ to differentiate themselves from their nephew. Silas, Levinus, and Job were all colonial soldiers. Proof of the name change is shown in Figure 1. In the 1790 U. S. Census, all Ansons (11) lived in Dutchess County, New York.

Y-DNA Analysis:

Another proof of the Austin to Anson descendency is Y-DNA analysis. Examination of the Y-DNA data (at www.afaoa.org/Austin_Profile_Table.htm ) reveals three Y-DNA sequences {see (1)-(3) below} from individuals descended from John Austin of Greenwich (1620-1657)—his son Thomas (1654- )—and his grandson Jonathan (1682-1769); exact descendency is not disclosed.

The genetic distances of 3 or less (no more than 3 alleles different) in comparisons of the first 67 loci of the Y-DNA sequences of a gggson Job Austin with John Austin descendants constitutes absolute proof of a common Austin ancestor.

Ancestors of Jesse Anson

Generation One

1. Jonathan³ Austen (Thomas², John¹)¹⁵,¹⁶, was born 1685 and died 1769. He married (1) abt 1705 probably at Greenwich Hannah Ferrisdaughter of Joseph and Ruth (Knapp) Ferris. She was born abt 1682 and died before 14 Apr 1711 when Jonathan referred to his wife Hannah, late of Greenwich, deceased (probably no issue). He married (2) abt 1711 at Greenwich Phebe Lockwood daughter of Robert and Mary¹⁷ Lockwood.

Jonathan and Phebe (Lockwood) Austen had seven children:¹⁸

2 i. JONATHAN AUSTIN was born abt 1 Jan 1711/2 and died in the Philipse Patent, Dutchess, New York before 6 May 1767 when his will was presented for probate.¹⁹ He married Charity (probably Odell) and lived in Westchester County before moving to Dutchess County.

3 ii. SARAH AUSTIN was born abt 1718. She probably married (1) 12 Oct 1738 at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut Jonathan Newman, Jr. She married (2) ____ Knapp. Two children by Newman..

+ 4 iii. SILAS ANSON/AUSTIN was born abt 1720 at Stanwich, Fairfield, Connecticut and died 4 May 1805 at Planksborough, Albany, New York. He married Martha ____.

5 iv. MARY AUSTIN was born abt 1722 and died 28 Oct 1797 (age 75) and is buried at Old Stanwich (Cherry Orchard Cemetery, Greenwich). Never married.

6 v. JOHN AUSTIN was born abt 1728 and was baptized²⁰ as an adult from Stanwich, age 21, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Stamford 10 Sep 1749; he died before 3 May 1774, when his estate was administered. He married Elizabeth Hurley, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Whitney Finch) Hurley. Children included Samuel Austin, the future Tory, chr 6 Dec 1749.²¹

+ 7 vi. LEVINUS ANSON/AUSTIN was born abt 1727 probably at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut and probably died at Washington, Dutchess, New York after 1790. He married Elizabeth Finch

8 iv. JOB AUSTIN was born abt 1733 and died 11 Aug 1779 (age 46) and is buried at Old Stanwich (Cherry Orchard Cemetery, Greenwich). He was patriot veteran of the Revolutionary War.²² Job left a will dated 1779 and proved 23 Mar 1780 naming wife Mary, brothers Levinus and Silas, sisters Mary Austin and Sarah Knapp, sons of deceased brothers Jonathan and John and his namesake Job Austin son of Silas.²³ He married Mary Ferris daughter of Nathaniel and Keziah (Blackman) Ferris.²⁴ Mary married (2) Joseph Ferris (1735-1810). He had no issue which survived him.²⁵

Generation Two

{Austins who used the ‘Anson’ name}

4. Silas⁴ (Jonathan³ Thomas², John¹) Anson/Austin²⁶ was born abt 1720 at Stanwich, Fairfield, Connecticut and died 4 May 1805 at Planksborough, Albany, New York; he is buried in the Smithfield Cemetery, Amenia, Dutchess, New York.²⁷,²⁸ He was the son of Jonathan and Phebe (Lockwood) Austin.²⁹ He served in the Revolutionary War in the Fifth New York Militia; he was a Lieutenant.³⁰ He married abt 1743 Martha ___. She was born 1727 and died 5 Aug 1779 (age 52); she is also buried at the Smithfield Cemetery, Amenia, Dutchess, New York; husband and wife’s names are on a common stone.³¹

Silas and Martha Anson had six children:³²

+ 9 i. SILAS ANSON, Jr. was born abt 1751 of Dutchess County, New York. He married Polly Palmer. Eight children.

+ 10 ii. JOB ANSON was born 1753 at Dutchess County, New York and died 27 Aug 1822 (age 69) at Dutchess County, New York and is buried in the Smithfield Cemetery, Amenia, Dutchess, New York.³³

+ 11 iii. ROBERT ANSON was born 1755 at Dutchess County, New York and died in 1827 at Peru, Clinton, New York. He married Phebe Finch.

12 iv. ABRAHAM ANSON was born 1757 of Dutchess County, New York and died of Washington, Dutchess, New York. He married abt 1786 Eunice ____. She was born 1766 and died 12 Oct 1836 (age 70); buried at Smithfield Cemetery, Amenia, Dutchess, New York.³⁴ They may not have had many children.³⁵

13 v. MARTHA ANSON was born 1764 of Dutchess County, New York.

+ 14 vi. (Rev.) WILLIAM ANSON was born 1765 of Dutchess County, New York. He accompanied his brother Robert to Clinton County, New York abt 1800 and died there perhaps at Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York. He married Bridget Wilkinson.

7. Levinus⁴ (Jonathan³ Thomas², John¹) Anson/Austin was born abt 1727 probably at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut and died probably at Washington, Dutchess, New York after 1790. He married about 1754 Elizabeth Finch.

Levinus and Elizabeth (Finch) Anson had children.³⁶

+ 15 i. LEVINUS ANSON, Jr. was born abt 1755 of Dutchess County, New York and died 1813. He married Deborah Sherwood.

Generation Three

9. Silas5, Jr. (Silas⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born Apr 1751 of Dutchess County, New York and died 4 Jan 1826 at Amenia, Dutchess, New York; buried³⁷ in the Smithfield Cemetery, Smithfield, Dutchess, New York. He married³⁸ 1773 Polly Palmer; she was born 1749 and died after 1837.

Silas, Jr. and Polly (Palmer) Anson and his wife had eleven children:³⁹,⁴⁰

16 i. JAMES ANSON was born abt 1775 and died 14 Sep 1837 at Washington, Dutchess, New York (intestate will #1563 on file at the Surrogate Court at Poughkeepsie).⁴¹ Never married; his will lists his sibs living in 1837 (brothers: Jonathan, Silas, Robert, William, Cornelius and Arnold and sisters: Polly Mallery, Harriet Hoag, Julia Knickerbocker, Patty Bristol).

17 ii. JONATHAN ANSON born abt 1773 and died 13 Oct 1855 at Bellevue, Easton, Michigan.⁴² He married (1) Lois Finch dau of Abe Finch of Dutchess County; she was born abt 1755 and died between 1820 and 1825. The family moved to Ontario County, New York in 1816. He married (2) 23 Mar 1825 at Canandaiqua, Ontario, New York Sarah (Sally) Rumney; she was born abt 1793. Ten children with Lois (including a son Silas⁴³ b. 1800) and four with Sally.

18 iii. SILAS ANSON born abt 1787 of Amenia, Dutchess, New York and died 14 May 1857 at Hopewell, Ontario, New York. He married probably in Dutchess County Esther ____; she was born abt 1786. By 1816 he had moved to Ontario County, first to Gorham and then Hopewell.⁴⁴ Eight children.

19 iv. ROBERT ANSON.

20 v. WILLIAM ANSON born abt 1786 and died after 1850⁴⁵ (living in 1837 at death of brother James).

+ 21 vi. CORNELIUS ANSON was born 1790 and died 1872 and is buried with his wife. He married Polly Hummerston; she was born 1792 and died 10 Jul 1888; buried in the Valley View Cemetery, Dover Plains, Dutchess.

22 vii. ARNOLD ANSON was born 1810 and died after 1865.⁴⁷ Apparently never married.

23 viii. POLLY ANSON, married Azariah Mallery.

25 x. JULIA ANSON, married Miles Knickerbocker.

26 xi. PATTY ANSON; she died before 1837, married ____ Bristol.

10. Job⁵ (Silas⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born abt 1753 of Connecticut, the son of Silas and Martha Anson;⁴⁸ died 27 Aug 1822 of Amenia, Dutchess, New York (age 69) and is buried in the Smithfield Burying Ground (Smithfield Presbyterian Church, Amenia, Dutchess, New York).⁴⁹ Although buried in Amenia, Dutchess, New York, he may have farmed in Sharon, Litchfield, Connecticut; Amenia and Sharon are very close to the state line—only 5.7 miles apart.

Job Anson and his wife had at least three children:

+ 27 i. JOB ANSON was born after 1776 of New York or Connecticut and died 19 Oct 1835 at Cuba, Alleghany, New York. He married abt 1807 Charlotte Holmes.

+ 28 ii. (Rev.) LEONARD ANSON was born 1784 in New York and died 7 Mar 1854 at Ellery, Chautauqua, New York and was buried at the Bemus Point Cemetery, Ellery Center. He married 23 Jan 1816 Rachael Smith.

29 iii. LIPHENA ANSON was born abt 1803 in New York. She married⁵⁰ 18 Sep 1828 George Willis of Cornwall, Litchfield, Connecticut.

11. Robert⁵ (Silas⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born before 1755 at Dutchess County, New York and died 11 Jan 1827 at Peru, Clinton, New York; buried⁵¹ at Blockhouse Cemetery, Clinton County.⁵² He and his brother William were among the first settlers of Peru, Clinton, New York, in what is now the town of Ausable.⁵³ He married before 1790 Phebe Finch daughter of Isaac and Abigail (Mosher) Finch of Washington, Dutchess, New York. She was born abt 1761⁵⁴ and died after 1850 at Peru, Clinton, New York.⁵⁵

Robert and Phebe (Finch) Anson had ten children:⁵⁶

30 i. AMOS ANSON born Jan 1786 and died 26 Mar 1842 and is buried⁵⁷ in the Peru Cemetery. He was a lumberman.⁵⁸ He married abt 1820 Serena Spear⁵⁹ who was born 1801 and died 1887 in Essex, Essex, New York; buried⁶⁰ in the Essex Cemetery with two of her children.⁶¹

31 ii. BRINTON PAINE ANSON born Jun 1789 and died 27 Jan 1880 at Peru, Clinton, New York.⁶²,⁶³ He married 22 Jun 1819 at Saratoga, Saratoga, New York Margaret Ott;⁶⁴ she was born 1791 and died 1873.⁶⁵,⁶⁶ Children included Hylor Selden Anson (1821-1895), Thirza Anson Wilson (1826- ), Amanda Anson (1828-1919), Oscar Ott Anson (1831-1923), and Pamela Anson Knowles (17 May 1831-30 Jan 1896).

32 iii. ISAAC ANSON born abt 1795 and died 15 Jun 1852; buried in the Peru Cemetery.⁶⁷ He married Sally A___. She was born 1805 in New York.⁶⁸

33 iv. POLLY/MARY ANSON. She is perhaps the Mary Anson born 30 Jun 1795 and died 18 jan 1873 and buried⁶⁹ in the Peru Cemetery.

34 v. LEWIS S. ANSON born abt 1800 of Peru, Clinton, New York. He married Lucinda ____ abt 1830; she was born 1807 in New York. At least five children.⁷⁰,⁷¹

14. William⁵ (Silas⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born 1765 of Dutchess County, New York. He accompanied his brother Robert to Clinton County, New York⁷⁴ abt 1800 and died there perhaps at Plattsburgh, Clinton, New York.⁷⁵ He lived for a time at Grand Isle, Clinton County.⁷⁶ He married Bridget Wilkinson. She was born 1764 and died 1842.

William and Bridget (Wilkinson) Anson had eight children:⁷⁷

40 i. WILLIAM ANSON was born 1790 at New York State, perhaps died early.⁷⁸

41 ii. REBECCA ANSON was born 11 Nov 1791 at Clinton County, New York and died 20 Sep 1872 Johnson County, Indiana and buried at Glade Cemetery, Johnson County.⁷⁹ She married 15 Sep 1807 (div) at Peru, Clinton, New York Jehiel Brooks.⁸⁰ He married (2) 1844 Mary Lacy; she was born 1797.⁸¹ He was born⁸² 3 Jun 1784 at Dummerston, Windham, Vermont and died after 1872.

42 iii. MARY ANSON was born 1794 and died after 1870 at Indiana.⁸³ Never married.

43 iv. MARTHA ANSON was born 1796 at Dutchess County, New York and died 1883.⁸⁴ She married 1821 at Port Kent, Essex, New York John Hooper Redstone; he was born 3 Jun 1789 and died 1834.⁸⁵ Five children.

44 v. SILAS ANSON was born 1805 at Peru, Clinton, New York and died after 1880.⁸⁶ He married⁸⁷ 1838 Lucy Swaddle of Clinton County, New York. She was born 1817 and died 1880.⁸⁸

15. Levinus, Jr.⁵ ‘Vine’ (Levinus⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born abt 1755 of Dutchess County, New York and died after 1820.⁸⁹ He married Deborah Sherwood dau of Seymour and Mary Sherwood of Stanford, Dutchess, New York. She was born abt 1760 and died after 1815.⁹⁰

Levinus and Deborah (Sherwood) Anson had seven children.⁹¹,⁹²

+ 48 i. SAMUEL ANSON⁹³,⁹⁴ was born 1778/9 at Dutchess County, New York. He married Lydia Haskins dau of Joel and Rachel (Haight) Haskins; she was born 1 Nov 1783 at Dutchess County, New York.

+ 49 ii. RUFUS ANSON born 1781 at Dutchess County, New York and died 18 Mar 1864 at Washington, Dutchess, New York.

+ 50 iii. LEBBEUS ANSON born abt 1784 and died abt 1849 at Clinton, Dutchess, New York and is probably buried in the family burial ground in Stanford (no gravestone). He married (1) Rebecca ____; she was born abt 1780 and died abt 1827. He married (2) before 1830 Amy ____; she was born abt 1795 and died after 1860. Eight children⁹⁵ (or nine if Samuel Bloss Anson is a son).⁹⁶

51 iv. LEVINUS ANSON the 3rd was born 1786⁹⁷ of Dutchess Co., New York and died before 1870 at Albany, Albany, New York. He married unknown; she was born abt 1785. Children, at least a dau/gdau? Rebecca Woodruff of Rensselaerville, Albany, New York.

+ 52 v. SEYMOUR ANSON was born 1792 at Dutchess Co., New York and died after 1870 of Albany.⁹⁸ He married Mary ____; she was born abt 1795 and died abt 1835. Five children.

+ 53 vi. LUDLOW ANSON was born abt 1795 at Dutchess County and died 1870 at Cairo, Greene, New York. He married abt 1849 Polley Haightman.⁹⁹ Four children.

54 vii. MATILDA ANSON was born Sep 1798 at Dutchess County, New York. She married 20 May 1819 at Athens, Greene, New York John Worth. He was born abt 1798 and died 20 Jul 1873 and is buried at Chappel Cemetery in Athens. Seven children.

Generation Four

21. Cornelius⁶ (Silas⁵, Silas⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born¹⁰⁰ 1790 and died 1872 and is buried with his wife. He married¹⁰¹ Polly Hummerston;¹⁰² she was born 1792 and died 10 Jul 1888;¹⁰³ buried¹⁰⁴ in the Valley View Cemetery, Dover Plains, Dutchess.

Cornelius and Polly Anson had eight children:

55 i. JARVIS B. ANSON was born 1814 and died 5 Aug 1846; buried¹⁰⁵ in the Valley View Cemetery, Dover Plains, Dutchess. He married after 1838 Abbey B___. She was born 1807 and had married abt 1835 (1) ____Duncan¹⁰⁶.

56 ii. CORNELIA B. ANSON was born 1817 and died 25 Sep 1823.

57 iii. WILLIAM H. ANSON¹⁰⁷,¹⁰⁸ was born 3 Aug 1820 at Dutchess County, New York. He married 12 Dec 1844 Sarah/Sally Ann Hawley dau of Luther and Hannah (Elliot) Hawley.¹⁰⁹,¹¹⁰ She was born Dec 1825.¹¹¹ They had four children: Hattie/Harriet (b. 15 Mar 1846, md 1867 Valdemar Anson, son of Benjamin and Minerva (Haight) Anson), Sarah Ann (b. 7 Jul 1849, md 15 Dec 1870 Frederick Masten, son of James and Clarissa (Talmadge) Masten ), Anna/Hannah (b. 27 Apr 1853-6 Oct 1868), and Charles (b. Nov 1855, md 1878 Annie Baker).¹¹²

58 iii. ROBERT E. ANSON was born 1822 and died 30 Oct 1823.

59 iv. GEORGE P. ANSON was born Feb 1831 and died 3 Nov 1906; buried¹¹³ in the Valley View Cemetery, Dover Plains, Dutchess, New York.¹¹⁴ He married Elizabeth C____.

60 v. CHARLES ANSON.¹¹⁵

61 vi. ROBERT E. ANSON was alive in 1865.¹¹⁶

62 vii. JACOB H. ANSON was born 1827 of Dutchess County. He married 1850 Virginia Benham and moved 1855 to Whiteside County, IL. He died 1919 at his son’s home in Iowa.¹¹⁷

27. Job⁶, (Job⁵, Silas⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born after 1776¹¹⁸ of Dutchess County, New York or Litchfield County, Connecticut and died¹¹⁹ ‘a natural death’ 19 Oct 1835 at Cuba, Alleghany, New York. He married abt 1807 at Delaware County, New York Charlotte Holmes;¹²⁰,¹²¹ she was probably the daughter of Nathan S. Holmes of Colchester, Delaware, New York.¹²²,¹²³ She was born after 1785 and died¹²⁴ before 8 Feb 1836 at Cuba, Allegany, New York.

He was a sergeant in Farrington’s Regiment of the New York Militia in the War of 1812.¹²⁵ He and his family settled in Cuba, Allegany, New York in 1823¹²⁶ where he was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church and later the 2nd Baptist Church of Cuba.¹²⁷ Job died intestate and his son Asa H. Anson petitioned on 8 Feb 1836 on behalf of Job’s widow Charlotte, then deceased, to administer the estate.¹²⁸

Job and Charlotte (Holmes) Anson had eleven children¹²⁹(3 boys,¹³⁰,¹³¹,¹³² 8 girls):

64 ii. ASA HOLMES ANSON was born 17 Jun 1810 at Delaware County, New York and died 16 Feb 1895 at Springfield, Sarpy, Nebraska. He married 23 Jun 1833 at Huntsberg, Geauga, Ohio Matilda Gardner, daughter of Moses Isaac and Polly (Pierson) Gardner. She was born 2 Nov 1815 at Seneca Falls, Seneca, New York and died 5 Apr 1904 at Springfield, Sarpy, Nebraska. Both are buried in the Ball Cemetery of Springfield. When his parents died, Asa returned to Cuba to administer their estate; by the 1840 census he was in Quincy, Illinois. In this census¹³⁵ there is an extra male age 15-19 (this is likely Asa’s brother Jesse, who was then married in Illinois in 1844). Ten children.¹³⁶

LEONARD ANSON¹³⁸ was born in 15 Oct 1815 in New York and died 6 Feb 1899 Creston, Platte, Nebraska.¹³⁹ He married Sarah Lord¹⁴⁰,¹⁴¹ 4 Jan 1842; she was born 2 Jul 1816 at Genesee County, New York and died 26 Oct 1876 at Creston, Platte, Nebraska and is buried¹⁴² at the Creston Pioneer Cemetery, Platte County. They were in Portville, Cattaraugus, New York in 1850, Clarksville, Allegany, New York in 1860, and Oak, Mills, Iowa in 1870.¹⁴³ Six children.

67 v. SARAH M. ANSON was born Jan 1817 at Harpersfield, Delaware, New York and died 21 Mar 1904 at Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York; buried¹⁴⁴ at Amenia Island Cemetery, Amenia, Dutchess. She married William Stone; he died 1891.

68 vi. JESSE ANSON was born 2 Jun 1820 in Delaware County, New York and died 11 Mar 1894 at Stevens Point, Portage, Wisconsin from a hemorrhage of the brain caused by a fall on the sidewalk. He married 29 Aug 1844 Maria Sands.

69 vii. ABAGAIL ANSON was born abt 1826; died after 1870. She may never have married.¹⁴⁵

28. (Rev.) Leonard⁶, (Job⁵, Silas⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson¹⁴⁹ was born 1784 at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York and died 7 Mar 1854 at Ellery, Chautauqua, New York. He married¹⁵⁰ 23 Jan 1816 at Northeast, Dutchess, New York Rachael Smith daughter of Ephraim and Miriam (Thurston) Smith; she was born 30 Dec 1785 Northeast, Dutchess, New York and died 8 Mar 1854 at Ellery, Chautauqua, New York.¹⁵¹,¹⁵²,¹⁵³ They lived before 1820 to after 1830 in Stafford, Genesee, New York where Leonard established the Baptist church in Pavillion in 1816.¹⁵⁴,¹⁵⁵ About 1834¹⁵⁶ he helped organize the 2nd Baptist Church in Cuba, Allegany, New York and later Leonard became its third pastor (1837-1841).¹⁵⁷,¹⁵⁸,¹⁵⁹ He and his wife Rachel are buried¹⁶⁰ at the Bemus Point Cemetery, Ellery Center.

Leonard and Rachel (Smith) Anson had a daughter:

71 i. JULIA HARRIET ANSON¹⁶¹ was born 22 Dec 1818 and died 31 May 1873 and is interred¹⁶² in the Oakwood Cemetery, Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota. She married 26 May 1840 Marshall W. Leland of Chicago, Cook, Illinois. He was born 30 Jun 1810 and died 17 Jul 1877 and is also interred in the Oakwood Cemetery. Five children.

48. Samuel⁶ (Levinus, Jr⁵, Levinus⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born abt 1778/9 probably in Dutchess County. In his early twenties¹⁶³ he was in Peru, Clinton, New York with wife and young dau probably working with one of his uncles Robert or William. Before 1810 they moved to Harpersfield, Delaware, New York and then to Saratoga County, New York. He married (2) abt 1797 probably in Dutchess County Lydia Haskins dau of Joel and Rachel (Haight) Haskins of Stanford, Dutchess, New York. She was born 1782 of Stanford, Dutchess, New York. Samuel and Lydia are most likely buried¹⁶⁴ in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, Monroe, New York in the same cemetery where their dau Lucretia (Anson) Ashley is buried.

76 v. SAMUEL ANSON, Jr. was born 15 May 1815 and died¹⁷⁷ 15 Feb 1901 at Prairieville, Barry, Michigan. He married 1840 Ellen Reynolds, dau of Benjamin and Ellen Reynolds; she was born 2 Feb 1823 and died 8 Nov 1896;¹⁷⁸ both are interred in the Cressey Cemetery, Barry County, Michigan.¹⁷⁹

49. Rufus⁶ (Levinus, Jr⁵, Levinus⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born¹⁸⁰ 1781 at Dutchess County, New York and died¹⁸¹ 18 Mar 1864 at Washington, Dutchess, New York. He owned a rifle manufactory in Stanford, Dutchess, New York that he and his sons ran for many years. He left a genealogically important will.¹⁸² He married (1) Margaret Schryver. She was born 1788 at Connecticut and died¹⁸³ 9 Sep 1841 at Stanford, Dutchess, New York. He married (2) Ruth ____; she was born¹⁸⁴ 1790.

77 i. ALFRED ANSON born 1804 and died after 1872; buried¹⁸⁶ in the Friends Burial Ground, Stanfordville, Dutchess. He married (1) abt 1829 Lucinda ____; she was born 1805 and died 25 Feb 1833 at Dutchess County and is buried¹⁸⁷ at the Friends Burial Ground. He married (2) abt 1835 Sophia S___; she was born 1816 and died 21 Feb 1872 at Dutchess County, New York and is buried¹⁸⁸ with her husband at the Friends Burial Ground, Stanfordville, Dutchess.¹⁸⁹ At least three children: Morgan, (b. 1836, d. 1855), Eliza (b. 1838, md Samuel B. Newell, d. 30 Apr 1857), and Edward M. (b. 1847, d. 1856).

82 vi. ELIZABETH (Betsey) ANSON born 1816 at New York and died 1889; buried at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.¹⁹⁹ She married Robert Wilson;²⁰⁰,²⁰¹ he was born 1816 at Scotland and died 1880 and is buried next to his wife.

83 vii. JANE B. ANSON was born 1817 and died before 1860. She married²⁰² (1) ____ Morgan and (2) 27 Jan 1842 Peter V. Losee; he was born 1817 and died after 1900.²⁰³ Five children.

84 viii. RUFUS ANSON Jr. born²⁰⁴ 1822 and died after 1880. He was a photographer and wood carver. He married²⁰⁵ 7 May 1848 Harriet Myers. She was born 1825 and died before 1880.²⁰⁶

85 ix. MELINDA ANSON born 7 Oct 1825 at Dutchess County, New York and died 15 Jan 1910, buried²⁰⁷ at Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, Essex, New Jersey. She married²⁰⁸ 3 Sep 1846 at Stanford, Dutchess John C. ‘Sterns’/Stevens.²⁰⁹

Lebbeus⁶ (Levinus, Jr⁵, Levinus⁴, Jonathan³, Thomas², John¹) Anson was born abt 1784 and died abt 1849 at Clinton, Dutchess, New York and is probably buried in the family burial ground in Stanford (no gravestone). He married (1) Rebecca ____; she was born abt 1780 and died abt 1827. He married (2) before 1830 Amy ____; she was born abt 1795 and died after 1860.

86 i. LUCINDA ANSON born 1807 and died 1858 at Independence, Oakland, Michigan. She married 1829 Stephen Ward; he was born 1804 and died 1830.²¹¹

EBENEZER ANSON born 26 Feb 1811 and died 19 Jan 1867 at Princeton, Bureau, Illinois and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Princeton.²¹² He married²¹³ (1) 24 Jul 1831 at Washington, Dutchess Mary Rinos (they were divorced or she died before 1839) and (2) before 1839 Permelia (Richardson) Brundage; she was born 1817 at New York.²¹⁴ He was a shoemaker in Lockport and was divorced after 1850; he then went to Illinois to start over as a farmer. He married (3) 12 Oct 1855 at Princeton, Bureau, Illinois Angeline (Jontz) Landis. More than five children, three from Angeline.

88 iii. ALANSON ANSON born 2 Feb 1809 at Dutchess County and died 14 Oct 1852; buried²¹⁵ at Bangall Baptist Church #2 Cemetery, Bangall, Dutchess County, New York. He was an attorney.

He married²⁴⁶ 7 Nov 1846 at Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts Louisa Rulofson/Rulison dau of Daniel and Lavinah (Wood) Rulison. She was born²⁴⁷ 26 Jan 1827 at Schenectady, Schenectady, New York and died 15 Nov 1909. Both are buried²⁴⁸ in the Cairo Cemetery, Cairo, Greene, New York. Six children: Sarah L. 94. Samuel is often listed in Ancestry family trees as a son of Robert (11) and Phebe Anson, but this is not confirmed by Hurd or Anson Newsletter research. This is also very unlikely as Robert and Phebe married abt 1790 and Samuel was born 1778/9. Samuel is sometimes listed as a son of Silas, Jr. (9), but this is also not confirmed by any researcher including the Anson Newsletter #9. In the 1790 Census Silas, Jr. was head of a family of 4 with one son under 16; i. e. Silas (the 3rd) the son was 3 yrs in 1790 and Samuel was abt 11 yrs. Silas (the 3rd) is well established as Silas, Jr.’s son so there appears to be no room for Samuel in this family.

No source specifically lists Samuel as a son of Levinus (14), but dates, census records (children count, 1790), and geographic parameters are consistent.

130. Jesse’s biography states he was one of three brothers (note vide supra). The identity of the three boys is much debated but can now be resolved. Jesse is one, and Asa (b. 1810) has to be another as he returned from Illinois to be executor of Job’s estate in 1836. The third is either Leonard or Joel H. (both were residents of Cuba). Leonard (b. 1815) has to be the third; Joel (b. 1807) was considerably older and certainly would have been executor (and he was local) if he were the third son and Asa would not have been executor.

This can be effectively disproven by examination of the 1820 Census of Harpersfield, Delaware, New York, National Archives Roll M33_65, Page 63; Image 75, Household: 4 males, 4 females (census taken 7 Aug 1820); the 4 males are one 25-45 yrs (Job), one 10-16 yrs (Asa) and two less than 10 yrs (Leonard, age 5 and Jesse, age 2 mo)—no Joel, age 13. Additionally and perhaps most importantly, although Joel would have been the oldest son he was not named executor at Job’s death.

The fact that Seymour Anson is living with Nathan at the 1850 Census (Stanford, Dutchess, New York, Roll M432_497, Page 200A, Image 352) and at the 1870 Census (Stanford, Dutchess, New York, Roll M593_928, Page 234B, Image 342276, FHL Film 552427) is a strong indication that Seymour is Nathan’s father.

Hello, I recently found this website and have a number of comments. My name is Scot Austin and I am descended from John and Katherine Austin (Asten) of Greenwich Connecticut.

I belong to AFAOA and I am the compiler for this line. I first made contact with Shirley Anson in 1993. She sent me a copy of her Nov 1992 detailing her discovery of the Austin/Anson connection. I also have in my possession a copy of Edith Austin Moore’s Manuscript.

Several recent discoveries have been made partially triggered by the results of DNA testing. Do you know of any Anson male line desccendants who have undergone yDNA testing?

Some corrections:
Hannah Ferris was not the mother of Jonathan Austin’s children. She died in 1711. He remarried soon after probably to Phebe Lockwood, daughter of Robert.

They had five sons, Jonathan, John, Silas, Lavinus and Job. None of them fought in the English Army. Jonathan and John both died before the war in 1767 and 1772 respectively. Silas, Job and Lavinus were all 3 colonial soldiers and they and some of their descendants often used the name Anson.

The Tory in the family was Samuel, the eldest son of John and Elizabeth Hurley and Nephew of the 3 brothers named above. He migrated with Captain Richard Squires’ company to New Brunswick in 1683. A large number of his descendants can be found in Arnie Krause’ Loyalist data base on line. His younger brother James migrated to Nova Scotia in 1786, but no more is known of him nor where his loyalties lay. There were 5 other brothers in this family, one of them, my ancestor, John served in Connecticut, New York and Vermont. Keith Austin from Idaho has been accepted in SAR based on his descent from him.

I appreciate your efforts to document your sources, but the only link to the noble Anson family appears to be from the Cap Anson autobiography. Pretty shaky evidence.

  Thank you very much for your most useful comments. I knew it was a big mistake to stop taking a hard copy of the Register and to depend on the electronic copy…I’m just not used to reading it thoroughly. The Fred Hart article is really terrific.
  I will make appropriate corrections in the next iteration of the essay. I have found other new data and may have identified an individual that could provide useful material for a Y-DNA analysis. When I have more information, I will correspond with you on the afaoa.org website–is that best?

My name is Ed Anson. As a descendant of Job Anson, I found this article particularly interesting. It helped me find the right path to answer some questions I had. I have two comments, actually a clarification and a correction.

1. As mentioned in endnote 157, Charlotte Holmes married Job Anson. Not only did they live in the same county, but they were next-door neighbors in the sense that they occupied adjacent tracts of farm land. At one point, Job mortgaged a lot to Nathan S. Holmes — the same lot originally occupied by Holmes. Although I still haven’t found the deed, I suspect this was in connection with purchasing the land from him.
2. Endnote 183 argues that Leonard wasn’t Job’s son. I never found the argument very compelling, and the suggestion that Leonard was the son of the older Leonard doesn’t work because they were hundreds of miles apart at the time of his birth. My own analysis of the census records led me to believe that Job was the most likely father of my great-great-grandfather Leonard. Then, while researching Asa Holmes Anson I ran across a piece of information that confirmed the connection.

The Columbus (Nebraska) Journal of Feb. 24, 1886 includes on page 3 the single sentence: “Asa Anson of Sarpy County, spent the Sabbath with his nephews of the Lindell House.” At that time, the Lindell House (a popular hotel in Columbus) was jointly owned by Frank Anson (my great-grandfather) and his brother John. Since Leonard was their father, this makes Leonard Asa’s brother and thus a son of Job.

My analysis of the records for Job Anson in the census of 1810, 1820 and 1830 shows that they are consistent with a family of four sons and seven (possibly eight) daughters. Most likely, the sons were Joel, Asa, Leonard and Jesse.

I wonder what DNA analysis has been done regarding this branch of the Anson family. My own DNA is on file with Ancestry, but so far the only matches have been either too close or too distant to provide much insight. However, they did serve to corroborate my relationship with the Anson/Austin family generally.

  My wife is a 3ggdau of Job, thru Jesse. Thank you so much for your comment. It has stimulated our interest and discussion very much in the last week. Please send us a scan of the Columbus (Nebraska) Journal article and also a scan of any other information (deed maps) for the Holmes/Anson properties and any other things you think we may not have.   The idea that Leonard may be Job’s son is not new to us. We were forced to rule it out because of the Wisconsin biography that was published at Jesse’s death (notes 2- 4). It said ‘he was one of three brothers and eight sisters’ (this may be a primary source—it can still be wrong, but it needs weight of evidence to ignore it). It may be as simple as Jesse having said he had three brothers instead of being one of three. We couldn’t eliminate Joel or Asa so we eliminated Leonard as a possibility for Job’s son. Your new evidence calls for a reexamination . There are actually three Leonard Ansons in this area during this time period. We are committed to doing an intensive study of the three to figure out who did what and who belongs with whom. We already have a good deal of new information to add to an update of the essay, but will wait on the update until we hopefully figure out what is going on with the Leonards. We will of course acknowledge your contributions now and in the future in the essay.
