The Piggot/Pickett Family of Berkshire

The 18th and 19th century Piggot/Pickett family of Berkshire lived for generations in the hamlet called ‘Oare’; earlier Piggots lived in the nearby town of Thatcham and nearby village of Hampstead-Norreys. Oare is near the village of Courage (now Curridge) which in turn is near and south of the village of Chieveley, northwest of the village of Thatcham and southwest of the village of Hampstead-Norreys. Chieveley is 4 miles north of Newbury, Berkshire. The villages of Curridge and Chieveley constituted the Parish of Chieveley.

James Piggot, b. 1794 (a woodcutter) and Mary (née Armstrong) Piggot/Pickett had seven children, but three died in childhood and the surviving three sons (William Armstrong, George and Mathew with their wives and families, if applicable) all emigrated to America (Tooele County, Utah) in 1849,¹1855,² and 1862,³ respectively; the surviving daughter Elizabeth remained in England. Their mother Mary died in 1834 and James remarried Hannah Cassell who bore him one son Charles, who also stayed in England.

Early in James’ life he spelled his name ‘Piggot’ (e.g. 1841 England census)⁴, but later the name was spelled ‘Picket/Pickett’ (e.g. 1851 England census)⁵; his sons also initially spelled their name ‘Piggot’ and later used the ‘Pickett’ spelling.

Generation B

1. James^B Piggot, born 16 Oct 1758 at Thatcham, Berks, England and christened⁶ 28 Mar 1762 at Hampstead-Norreys, Berks and died 3 Apr 1832 at Chieveley, Berks; buried at the parish church cemetery 5 Apr 1832⁷. He married⁸ 23 Feb 1784 at Peasemore, Berks Mary Slade daughter of Joseph and Catherine (née Butler) Slade.⁹ She was born in 1760 and christened¹⁰ 20 Jul 1760 at Peasemore, Berks and was buried¹¹ 21 Dec 1821 at Chieveley, Berks.

James and Mary (Slade) Piggot had five children¹² at Courage in the Chieveley, Berkshire parish:

2 i. JOHN^A PICKET, christened¹³ 30 Sep 1784 at Oare, Chieveley, Berks and was buried 19 Nov 1790.

3 ii. CHARLOTTE^APICKET, christened¹⁴ 15 May 1787 at Oare, Chieveley, Berks and. She married 26 Nov 1808 William Cox. He was born abt 1785.

4 iii. HANNAH^A PICKET, christened 4 Jan 1789;¹⁵ died 1819 at Chieveley, Berks. She married 24 Dec 1810 at Chieveley, Berks James Kimber.

+ 5 iv. JAMES^A PICKET, born abt 1794 and christened¹⁶ 3 Sep 1794 at Chieveley, Berks; died 4 Jun 1861 at Chieveley, Berks.

6 v. MARTHA^A PICKET, christened¹⁷ 25 Dec 1797 at Chieveley, Berks and died 29 Oct 1871¹⁸. She married¹⁹ 14 Oct 1824 Richard Phillips of Berks; he was born abt 1795.

Generation A

5. James^A (James^B) Pickett, christened²⁰ 3 Sep 1784 at Oare Parish Church in Courage (today Curridge), Chieveley, Berkshire, England, the son of James and Mary (née Slade) Pickett; died 4 Jun 1861 in Newbury, Berkshire; buried 8 Jun 1861.²¹ He married²² (1) on 16 Oct 1816 at Chieveley, Berkshire, England Mary Armstrong christened 4 Sep 1792 at East Hagbourne, Berkshire, England daughter of Robert and Mary (née Pithers Baldwin) Armstrong.²³ She died on 17 Jul 1834 and was buried the same day in Chieveley, Berkshire, England.²⁴ He married²⁵ (2) 5 Sep 1835 Hannah Cassel/Castle, born 28 Oct 1807 and christened²⁶ 1 Nov 1807 in Hampstead-Norreys, Berkshire daughter of Thomas Seamore and Harriet Cassel; she died in 1857.

James and Mary (Armstrong) Pickett had seven children in the Courage, Chieveley, Berkshire parish:

7 i. WILLIAM¹ ARMSTRONG PICKET, born 9 Nov 1818 and christened 29 Nov 1818;²⁷ died 11 Dec 1901 at Tooele, Tooele, Utah, USA and was buried 14 Dec in the Tooele Cemetery.²⁸ He married²⁹ 6 Nov 1841 at Newbury, Berkshire (1) Mary Castle born 21 Aug 1821 at Brokenway, Hampshire, England daughter of John Castle; died 27 Dec 1900 at Tooele, Tooele, Utah and buried 31 Dec 1900 in Tooele City Cemetery.³⁰ In the 1850 U. S. Census he and Mary were enumerated in Pottawattomie County, Iowa.³¹ In polygamous relationships he married 11 Jun 1856³² at Utah (2) Mary Brownjohn and 3 Mar 1860³³ at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah (3) Priscilla Clark (see body of manuscript) and 10 Nov 1873³⁴(4) Ann Todd. [no issue]

+ 8 ii. GEORGE¹ PICKETT, born 14 Aug 1821 and christened³⁵ 2 Sep 1821 in Chieveley, Berkshire, England; died 2 Apr 1857 in St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri, USA (see body of manuscript).³⁶

+ 9 iii. MATHEW¹ PICKETT, born 14 Feb 1824 and christened 14 Mar 1824 at Chieveley, Berkshire, England;³⁷ he died 21 Aug 1892 at Tooele, Tooele, Utah, USA and was buried in Aug 1892 in the Tooele Cemetery.³⁸

10 iv. JANE¹ PICKETT, born 1826 and christened 24 Sep 1826;³⁹ she died 1833 and was buried 17 Mar 1833 in Chieveley, Berkshire, England.⁴⁰

11 v. ELIZABETH¹ (BETSY) PICKETT was christened⁴¹ 16 Aug 1829 in Chieveley, Berkshire, England; died 8 Mar 1903. She married⁴² 24 Nov 1849 at Newbury, Berkshire John Rod born 6 May 1827 in Thatcham, Berkshire; died 22 Nov 1901. [5 children]⁴³

12 vi. JAMES¹ PICKETT, born abt Aug 1831 and christened privately 9 Sep 1832; died 1832 and was buried 28 Jan 1833.⁴⁴

13 vii. JAMES¹ PICKETT, born 6 Jul 1834 and died 9 Jul 1834 in Courage, Chieveley, Berkshire, England.⁴⁵

James and Hannah (Cassel) Pickett had a son in the Courage, Chieveley, Berkshire parish:

14 i. CHARLES¹ PICKETT, born in 10 Nov 1839 in Newbury, Berkshire;⁴⁶ died after 1891. He probably never married.⁴⁷

Generation One

8. George¹(James^A, James^B) Pickett , born 14 Aug 1821 and christened 2 Sep 1821 at Chieveley, Berkshire, England⁴⁸ son of James and Mary (née Armstrong) Pickett; died 2 Apr 1857 at St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.⁴⁹ He married⁵⁰ 11 Feb 1843 at Chieveley, Berkshire (1) Maria Jarvis christened 19 Jun 1808 at Aston Tirrold, Berkshire daughter of James and Mary (Jones) Jarvis.⁵¹She died 10 Mar 1849 at Courage, Chieveley, Berkshire.⁵² He married⁵³ 4 Sep 1853 at Newbury, Berkshire (2) Priscilla Clark born 22 Sep 1826 and christened 22 Oct 1826 at Buckland-Dinham, Somersetshire daughter of James and Fanny (Hurle) Clark.⁵⁴ She died 6 Jul 1869 at Carson City, Ormsby, Nevada, USA⁵⁵ and was buried on their Clear Creek ranch in Carson City.⁵⁶(see body of manuscript)

George and Maria (Jarvis) Pickett had three children in the Chieveley, Berkshire parish:

15 i. JAMES² PIGGOT, born 15 May 1844 at Chieveley, Berks;⁵⁷ died in Utah before 1860.⁵⁸

16 ii. MARY² PIGGOT, born in 26 Apr 1846 at Chieveley, Berks.⁵⁹ Like her brother James, she died apparently in Utah before 1860.

17 iii. JANE² PICKETT born in 17 November 1848; died 6 June 1907 at Saint Charles, Idaho. She married John Thompson Barker on 20 June 1870 at Salt Lake City.⁶⁰

George and Priscilla (Clark) Pickett had two children:

18 i. LOUISA² PICKETT, born 25 July 1854, at Courage, Chieveley Parish, Berkshire, England;⁶¹ died 1855-56, probably at St. Louis, Missouri.⁶²

19 ii. MARIA LOUISA² PICKETT, born 29 November 1856, at St. Louis;⁶³ died 27 March 1930, at Twin Falls, Idaho.⁶⁴ She married (1) Cyrus Ammon Tolman, 12 December 1878,⁶⁵ and (2) George Franklin Read, 21 May 1891.⁶⁶

9. Mathew¹ (James^A, James^B) Pickett, born 14 Feb 1824 and christened⁶⁷ 13 Mar 1824 at Chieveley, Berkshire, England son of James and Mary (Armstrong) Pickett; he died 21 Aug 1892 at Tooele, Tooele, Utah, USA and was buried in Aug 1892 in the Tooele Cemetery.⁶⁸ He married⁶⁹ 1 Nov 1845 in Chieveley, Berkshire (1) Harriet Pocock born and christened⁷⁰ 2 Jun 1817 at Long Lane, Chieveley, Berkshire daughter of John and Ann (née Lailey) Pocock. She died 21 Feb 1898 at Tooele, Tooele, Utah and was buried Feb 1898 in Tooele Cemetery.⁷¹ He married⁷² in a polygamous relationship 21 Feb 1870 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah (2) Millicent Rose born⁷³ 23 Mar 1844 at Arnold, Nottingham, England daughter of John and Frances/Fanny (Housley) Rose. She died 19 Apr 1897 in Tooele, Tooele, Utah and was buried in the Tooele Cemetery.⁷⁴ After Mathew’s death, his two wives lived together for the rest of their lives.⁷⁵

Mathew and Harriet (Pocock) Pickett had six children:

20 i. JOHN WARREN² PICKETT, born 2 Aug 1846⁷⁷ in Courage, Chieveley, Berkshire; died 12 Apr 1936 at Logan, Cache, Utah and buried 15 Apr 1936 in Providence Cemetery, River Heights, Logan.⁷⁸ He married⁷⁹ (1) Rebecca Charlotte White 22 Dec 1866 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah—one of 5 polygamous wives.

The other four were:(2) Samantha Gollaher⁸⁰ (1 Mar 1875, Salt Lake City), two sisters (3) Rose Ellen Budd⁸¹ and (4) Alice Maria Budd⁸² 5 Jun 1884 and 8 Dec 1887, both at Salt Lake City) and (5) Harriet Cecilia Jones⁸³(8 Dec 1888 at Salt Lake City). In 1880 he was the sheriff of Tooele City. [19 children, 11 by Charlotte Rebecca White]

Dear Dr Richard Tolman,

I was very interested to read your genealogical history found on the internet for the Pickett family from Berkshire. I am wondering whether you and I might perhaps be distant cousins via my own recently discovered links to the Pickett family of Hampstead Norreys and Hermitage in Berkshire.

For a long time I had a big brick wall with my orphaned great-grandfather George Jubbie alias George Strange (1893-1959, but have recently discovered that he was the illegitimate son of Ellen Strange (1861-1913), and she was one daughter of Mary Pickett (1824-1878) and Henry Edward Strange (1820-1894) from Hampstead Norris/Hermitage.

My 3xgreat-grandmother, Mary Pickett, 1824-1878, appears to be one of ten children of William Pickett (1781-1848) and Ann Smith (1784-1861). William Pickett and Ann Smith were married in 1805 at the Chapel of St Bartholomew otherwise known as Oare Chapel near Chievely in Berkshire.

Most of their ten children seemed to have moved to the Hackney Shoreditch area of London Middlesex England during the 1850s and subsequently there were a great many Pickett/Piggott descendants of this family found in the censuses for that particular area of London and then later in bordering Oxfordshire.

Unfortunately, I cannot find a baptism for William Pickett circa 1781 so have no idea how his parents might have been related to your Berkshire Pickett’s. As such, I was wondering whether you have ever had any genetic DNA tests registered with FamilyTreeDNA.com or GedMatch.com, etc? I myself have had such tests taken, and so I could easily compare our genomes to look for a genetic match, but only of course if you too have such results available!

I look forward to receiving your kind reply, any further information that may be able to help me with, and perhaps proving/disproving any distant genetic kinship between our two families.

Hi Paul,
I’m finally back at my desk and have had a chance to check out my Pickett/Piggot file.
To answer previous questions first: we are undoubtedly cousins–Chieveley and Hampstead Norreys are just too small for it to be otherwise and no, I have not done any DNA studies on the Picketts–I don’t even know any living individuals with the Pickett surname.
I checked out FamilySearch and found at least 6 William Pickett datapoints from the 1780’s in Berkshire, but absolutely nothing is resolved on FamilyTree, so FamilySearch is useless. I descend from James Piggot (b. 1758)/Mary Slade as it is described in the 29deadpeople essay; my old research indicates James comes from William Piggot (b.1725)/Anne Stamp and they also had a son Thomas who I’m guessing could be the father of your William (b.1781), but I’ll have to search the Chieveley registers again. I’m going to RootsTech (genealogy conference in SLC) next week and have a couple days in the FHL there (they have the Chieveley registers), so I will put this on my TODO list. Hopefully we can figure this out.
