\u00a0 \u00a0 In two generations of the Leicestershire Wilford family, 6 sons immigrated to America: 6\u00a0<\/strong>James1 <\/sup> (EdwardA<\/sup>), 7\u00a0<\/strong>Frederick1 <\/sup> (EdwardA<\/sup>), 9\u00a0<\/strong>William1<\/sup> (EdwardA<\/sup>), 12\u00a0<\/strong>Edward2<\/sup> (John1<\/sup>\u00a0EdwardA<\/sup>), 14\u00a0<\/strong>Hardy2<\/sup> (John1<\/sup> EdwardA<\/sup>), and 16\u00a0<\/strong>Reuben2<\/sup> (John1<\/sup> EdwardA<\/sup>). \u00a0The first two went to Wisconsin, William to Nevada via<\/em> Australia, Edward to Wisconsin and then Kansas, Hardy to\u00a0Wisconsin and then into the American Civil War, and Reuben to Iowa.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The immigration or naturalization records of these individuals do not\u00a0reveal their origins in England.1<\/a><\/sup>Frederick Wilford, 4 Dec 1860,\u00a0Certificate of Naturalization, Waukesha County (Wisconsin) Naturalization\u00a0Records, Certificates, Vol. 4 (1859-1864), p. 234 {FHL US\/CAN Film 2318,294}.\u00a0Frederick states only that he was born in England and signed his declaration of\u00a0intent on 4 Oct 1845.<\/span>,<\/sup>2<\/a><\/sup>James Wilford, 30 Mar 1847,\u00a0Declaration of Intention to Become a Citizen, Waukesha County (Wisconsin)\u00a0Naturalization Records, Vol. 1 (1847-1855), p. 87 {FHL US\/CAN Film 2316,930}.\u00a0James states he was born about 1820 and emigrated through New York, arriving\u00a0Jun 1844.<\/span>,<\/sup>3<\/a><\/sup>Edward Wilford, 5 Nov 1860,\u00a0Declaration of Intention to Become a Citizen, Waukesha County (Wisconsin)\u00a0Naturalization Records, Vol. 5 (1859-1864), p. 284 {FHL US\/CAN Film 2317,272}.\u00a0Edward states he emigrated through New York, arriving March 1858.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Frederick, James, and Margaret\u00a0Catherine Wilford were presumed to be related because they are together on the\u00a0ship \u2018Atlantic\u2019 at their arrival in New York on 1 Jun 1844.4<\/a><\/sup>Wilford group\u00a0(James, \u2018Marg\/May\/Mary\u2019, Frederick), family 30140859, Ship \u2018Atlantic\u2019, arrived\u00a01 Jun 1844 from Liverpool, Registers of Vessels Arriving at the Port of New\u00a0York from Foreign Ports, 17 89-1919, micropublication M237, roll 54, National\u00a0Archives, Washington, D. C.; online at Ancestry.com.<\/span> Similarly, Hardy and Edward are presumed to be close relatives in the same\u00a0family, because of their Wisconsin association with James5<\/a><\/sup>James Wilford family group, 1860 U.\u00a0S. Census of Lindon, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, population schedule, p. 527,\u00a0dwelling 460, family 408, National Archives micropublication T653, roll 1432,\u00a0online at Ancestry.com; The family group includes a Hardy Wilford,\u00a0age 18, b. England, who does not appear in the James Wilford family group in\u00a0the 1850 census.<\/span> and Frederick6<\/a><\/sup>Edward Wilford family group, 1870 U. S. Census of Eagle, Waukesha, Wisconsin, population schedule, p. 192, dwelling\u00a028, family 27, National Archives micropublication M593, roll 1743, online at Ancestry.com.<\/span> respectively. \u00a0Margaret Catherine (Holyland) Wilford was shown to be James\u2019 wife\u00a0from their marriage record.7<\/a><\/sup>Wilford-Holyland certification of\u00a0marriage, Leicester District, First Quarter 1844, 15:131, England and Wales\u00a0Civil Registration, General Register Office, London, U. K.<\/span> This was not obvious at first from the great disparity of their ages (15\u00a0years)\u2014James continually reported his age older than he really was and Margaret\u00a0always reduced her age until she finally reported her correct age (at 76) in\u00a0the 1880 U. S. Census.8<\/a><\/sup>Margaret Wilford, boarder, 1880 U. S. \u00a0 \u00a0 William (the argonaut) went first to Australia on the \u2018Sophia\u20199<\/a><\/sup>Passengers Arriving in Western Australia on the Sophia<\/em> 27 Jul 1850: \u2018William Wilford, age 25, labourer of Leicestershire\u2019, online at www.perthdps.com; choose \u2018shipping\u2019 button on left, and the vessel \u2018SOPHIA\u2019, arr. 1850 (accessed 13 May 2014).<\/span> <\/sup>in 1850 and then to Nevada in 1855 on the \u2018Tarquinia\u2019 (which sank in Hawaii)\u00a0and then the \u2018Williamatic\u2019 which docked in San Francisco.10<\/a><\/sup>Marjorie Newton, comp., in Australian\u00a0Mission: List of 19th Century Members <\/em>(Bass, New South Wales, Australia: privately printed, 1988), p. 262,\u00a0reports that William Wilford, who converted to Mormonism in Australia in 1853,\u00a0was part of the “Gold Diggers\u00a0Unit.” Corlyn L. H. Adams, in The Jose Family: Utah by Way of Australia\u00a0<\/em>(Wolfe City, Tex.: C. H. Adams,\u00a01995), 2-3, reports that Wilford departed on the Tarquinia, <\/em> which sank\u00a0in Honolulu, and the voyage resumed on the Williamatic, <\/em> which\u00a0arrived in San Francisco in 1855. Neither compiler identified William by age,\u00a0parentage, or origin; exhaustive attempts have not yielded an immigration\u00a0record elsewhere for an individual matching the name, age, and occupation of\u00a0Priscilla`s last husband.<\/span> \u00a0<\/sup>He first appears in Nevada records in 1859 when a William Wilford filed on two\u00a0pieces of property in the Carson Valley (Utah Territory);11<\/a><\/sup>Ellison, Marion, An Inventory and\u00a0Index of Records of Carson County, Utah and Nevada Territories, 1855-1861 <\/em> (Reno,\u00a0Nevada: Grace Dangberg Foundation, 1984), p. 39-40 {FHL US\/CAN 979.3 R2e}.<\/span> he married Priscilla Clark Pickett in 1862, had three children before he died\u00a0of smallpox 21 Jan 1869 in Carson City, Ormsby, Nevada. His wife Priscilla was\u00a0murdered for money in July 1869 making the children orphans and wards of the\u00a0state of Nevada. In 1870, a man named Frederick Wilford appeared in Carson\u00a0City to petition the court for the custody of the children.12<\/a><\/sup>Estate Files, Ormsby County Clerk\u00a0(Carson City, Nevada), Docket 1779, item 2.<\/span> In the petition letter he stated that he was William\u2019s brother (he was\u00a0actually a half-brother) and that he was an established farmer in Wisconsin.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 The only Frederick Wilford in the Wisconsin censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870\u00a0(except for Frederick\u2019s son Frederick, b.1855) is the Frederick Wilford\u00a0(b.1821) who immigrated from Leicestershire in 1844.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 In 1861 Edward Wilford married Charlotte Ann Wilford (a first cousin), daughter\u00a0of Frederick and Ann James Wilford of Eagle, Waukesha, Wisconsin; their\u00a0marriage record is found in \u2018Waukesha marriages\u201913<\/a><\/sup>Edward Wilford-Charlotte A. Wilford\u00a0marriage, 27 Jul 1861, Waukesha county registration of marriages, 1860-1897,\u00a0Wisconsin Bureau of Vital Statistics, Madison, WI {FHL US\/CAN Film 1275,597,\u00a0item 2, (index item 5)} (Eagle, Waukesha, Wisconsin).<\/span> <\/sup>(see below, ref 58 and Fig. 3).\u00a0 Edward lists his parents there as John and Elizabeth Wilford of Leicestershire, England. \u00a0 Searching the 1851 British Census, a John and Elizabeth Wilford are\u00a0found in South Croxton, Leicester and they have sons Edward (age 12, b. abt\u00a01839), Hardy (age 9, b. abt 1842) and Reuben (age 7, b. abt 1844).14<\/a><\/sup>John Wilford family group, 1851\u00a0British Census of South Croxton, Leicestershire, p.7, house 28, The National\u00a0Archives (England), reference HO107\/2087; online at Ancestry.com.<\/span> <\/sup>Thus we deduce that three of our six immigrants are brothers, children of\u00a0Edward Wilford, b. 1787 and the other three younger men are children of a\u00a0fourth brother John.<\/span><\/p>\n
