Part II: Antecedents of Jesse Anson (w\/Y-DNA Analysis)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    This essay describes the family life, origins and two generations of descendants of Jesse Anson and Maria L. Sands<\/em><\/span><\/strong> of Delaware County, New York. Both of these individuals came from American colonial families and had the misfortune (from a genealogical point of view) of being raised in one of the most difficult time periods for New York county records. For this reason there exists much speculative and incorrect published information about the couple, their contemporary relatives and their origins. It is our purpose to provide documentation for that which is actually known.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Part I describes the descendants (three generations) of Jesse and Maria (Sands) Anson; Part II and Part III describe the ancestry of Jesse Anson and then Maria Sands, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Origins of Jesse Anson<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    We already know that Jesse came1<\/a><\/sup>FamilySearch lists Jesse\u2019s parents as George and Ann Elizabeth (Forester) Anson, both born London, but this plainly cannot be as they fit none of the parameters outlined by the evidence\u2014other than surname.<\/span> from American colonial stock with mother born in New York and father born in Connecticut.2<\/a><\/sup>\u2018Pioneer Profile: Jesse Anson and Wife Maria Sands\u2019, Pedigree Pointers<\/em>, Vol. 4, no. 1, Oct. 1981 (organ of the Stevens Point (Wisconsin) Genealogical Society), p. 10 {New York Public Library} ; their source of information is obscure, but much of the information is in the Steven\u2019s Point Gazette obit (Part 1) as well as his son Leonard\u2019s biography (cf. E. B. Usher, ref 44 in Part 1).<\/span>,3<\/a><\/sup>Jesse Anson entry: 1880 U. S. Census of Plover, Portage, Wisconsin, Roll 1442, FHL Film 1255 ,442, Page 108C, E. D. 142.<\/span> From the biographical sketch published by the Stevens Point (Wisconsin) Genealogical Society and his obituary, we know that he was orphaned when he was about age 14 (1834-35), that both parents died within a month of one another, and that he was one of eleven children (3 boys and 8 girls). Consider for a moment a geographic timeline for Jesse\u2019s father from this information: born before 1800 somewhere in Connecticut, resided in Delaware County NY in 1820 (Jesse\u2019s birth), and moved somewhere else to die in NY abt 1834.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Assuming Jesse and his family were in New York State four years before the death of the parents, the census records were examined (Jesse was 10 in 1830). There were 30 Anson families in the 1830 census of New York State. Nine of these Anson families (same forename and place) are ALSO in the 1840 U. S. Census and can therefore be eliminated as possible parents of Jesse. Of the remaining 21 Anson families, 14 can be eliminated as their households were judged to be too small for a family of 13 {households with 5 or less individuals (parents plus 3 children) were considered unlikely to be Jesse\u2019s family}. This leaves 7 Anson families. Three of the remaining could be eliminated by examining the Agricultural schedules in 1860 or 1880 and finding the fathers still alive. Two others had too many males and not enough females in their households. None of these Ansons were in Delaware County for the 1820 Census. Two left: one of these, a Rev. William Anson was one of the original settlers4<\/a><\/sup>Hurd, Duane Hamilton The History of Clinton and Franklin Counties, New York<\/em> (Clinton County, New York: Clinton County American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, 1880), p. 343 (hereafter Hurd<\/b>).<\/span> of Peru, Clinton Co., New York in abt 1805 and apparently stayed there (he was in Peru in the 1820 census). This left only Job Anson of Cuba, Allegany Co. (1830 household of 9).5<\/a><\/sup>1830 Census of Cuba, Allegany, New York, National Archives Series M19, Roll 84, p. 76; household: 4 males, 5 females.<\/span> Coincidentally, Job was the ONLY Anson in Delaware County for the 1820 census (he was also there in 1810)6<\/a><\/sup>1810 Census of Harpersfield, Delaware, New York, National Archives Roll 26, p. 502; household: 2 males, 3 females.<\/span>; he later removed in 18237<\/a><\/sup>Minard, John S. History of Allegany County, New York<\/em> (Alfred, New York: W. A. Ferguson & Co., 1896), p. 814.<\/span> to Cuba, Allegany County. He died intestate 19 Oct 18358<\/a><\/sup>Anson, Shirley V. Anson Newsletter #8, May 1987, p. 5-6, cited family records of direct descendants {FHL US\/CAN 929.27305 An82a now online at the Family History Library only}; hereafter Anson Newsletter<\/b>.<\/span> and his wife Charlotte died before 8 Feb 1836, when their son Asa H. Anson returned from Illinois to petition the Allegany County court to administer the estate.9<\/a><\/sup>Bush, Vivian Karen Allegany, Co. NY, Will Bk A, No. 1 of Wills; 1831-1841<\/em>; on-line at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com\/~nyallega\/wills-bk1.html (accessed 30 Apr 2013).<\/span> This must be Jesse\u2019s family.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This provides additional corroboration of Job as Jesse\u2019s father as it is in agreement with the Wisconsin biography details provided by Jesse\u2019s family or Jesse himself. It is noteworthy (see below) that Job had a brother Leonard, who also lived in Cuba. It is also noteworthy that Jesse named his oldest son and daughter Leonard and Julia after members of this family.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Job Anson was born in Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, but the Ansons have been traced10<\/a><\/sup>Anson Newsletter<\/b> #28, November 1992, p. 38 and references cited therein.<\/span> back to England {immigrant: John Austen (abt 1640-1673); they were among the original settlers of Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut}. The Austens are claimed on pretty shaky evidence11<\/a><\/sup>Anson, Adrian Constantine A Ball Player\u2019s Career<\/em> (United Kingdom: Dodo Press, 1900).<\/span> to be descended from William Austen, Esq. of Lincoln\u2019s Inn, an eminent barrister in the reign of James I, the owner of the mansion at Shuzsborough, Stafford.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The family surname was Austin\/Austen\/Astin until Jonathan Austin (1680-1769)12<\/a><\/sup>Hart, Frederick C. Jr. \u2018Early Austins of Greenwich and Stamford Connecticut\u2019 The Register<\/em>, Vol 168 (Apr 2014), p. 85-100. This beautifully sourced and wonderfully written article describes and differentiates the John Austins of Stamford and Greenwich and some of their progeny (hereafter Hart<\/b>).<\/span> had five sons: Jonathan (1712), Silas (abt 1720), John (abt 1728), Levinus (abt 1730), and Job (abt 1733).(see Moore, Edith Austin \u2018John Austin of Greenwich, Connecticut\u2019 (typescript, 353 p. at New York Public Library); filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Film 858668, item 2). At the time of the American revolution, a son of John (nephew Samuel Austin) was a Loyalist; his property was confiscated in 1779.13<\/a><\/sup>See also Hart<\/b>, p. 94.<\/span>,14<\/a><\/sup>Anson Newsletter<\/b> #28, November 1992, p. 28-9 and references cited therein.<\/span> Silas and Levinus (who lived at that time in Dutchess County) were patriots and changed their name to \u2018Anson\u2019 to differentiate themselves from their nephew. Silas, Levinus, and Job were all colonial soldiers. Proof of the name change is shown in Figure 1. In the 1790 U. S. Census, all Ansons (11) lived in Dutchess County, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n

Y-DNA Analysis:<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Another proof of the Austin to Anson descendency is Y-DNA analysis. Examination of the Y-DNA data (at www.afaoa.org\/Austin_Profile_Table.htm ) reveals three Y-DNA sequences {see (1)-(3) below} from individuals descended from John Austin of Greenwich (1620-1657)\u2014his son Thomas (1654- )\u2014and his grandson Jonathan (1682-1769); exact descendency is not disclosed.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The genetic distances of 3 or less (no more than 3 alleles different) in comparisons of the first 67 loci of the Y-DNA sequences of a gggson Job Austin with John Austin descendants constitutes absolute proof of a common Austin ancestor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ancestors of Jesse Anson<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Generation One<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Jonathan3<\/sup> Austen (Thomas2<\/sup>, John1<\/sup>)15<\/a><\/sup>Hart<\/b>, pp. 93-4; this article has more detail not reproduced here. See also www.werelate.org. He married (2) abt 1711 at Greenwich Phebe Lockwood<\/strong><\/span> daughter of Robert and Mary17<\/a><\/sup>Holden, Frederick Augustus Descendants of Robert Lockwood\u2026<\/em> (Salt Lake City, UT: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1951) p. 18 (wife Mary was executor of his will).<\/span> Lockwood.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Jonathan and Phebe (Lockwood) Austen had seven children:18<\/a><\/sup>Holden, Frederick Augustus Descendants of Robert Lockwood\u2026<\/em> (Salt Lake City, UT: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1951) p. 18 (wife Mary was executor of his will).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

   2 i. JONATHAN AUSTIN<\/span> was born abt 1 Jan 1711\/2 and died in the Philipse Patent, Dutchess, New York before 6 May 1767 when his will was presented for probate.19<\/a><\/sup>Jonathan Austen will, 8 May 1767: Fernow, Berthold Calendar of Wills 1626-1836<\/em> (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1967); abstract only, lists children, not wife.<\/span> He married Charity (probably Odell)<\/strong><\/span> and lived in Westchester County before moving to Dutchess County.<\/span><\/p>\n

   3 ii. SARAH AUSTIN<\/span> was born abt 1718. She probably married (1) 12 Oct 1738 at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut Jonathan Newman, Jr.<\/strong><\/span> She married (2) ____ Knapp<\/strong><\/span>. Two children by Newman.<\/span>.<\/p>\n

+ 4 iii. SILAS ANSON\/AUSTIN <\/span>was born abt 1720 at Stanwich, Fairfield, Connecticut and died 4 May 1805 at Planksborough, Albany, New York. He married Martha ____<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

   5 iv. MARY AUSTIN<\/span> was born abt 1722 and died 28 Oct 1797 (age 75) and is buried at Old Stanwich (Cherry Orchard Cemetery, Greenwich). Never married.<\/span><\/p>\n

   6 v. JOHN AUSTIN<\/span> was born abt 1728 and was baptized20<\/a><\/sup>Hart<\/b>, p. 96 and references therein.<\/span> as an adult from Stanwich, age 21, at St. John\u2019s Episcopal Church, Stamford 10 Sep 1749; he died before 3 May 1774, when his estate was administered. He married Elizabeth Hurley<\/strong><\/span>, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Whitney Finch) Hurley. Children included Samuel Austin, the future Tory, chr 6 Dec 1749.21<\/a><\/sup>Hart<\/b>, p. 96 and references therein.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

+ 7 vi. LEVINUS ANSON\/AUSTIN<\/span> was born abt 1727 probably at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut and probably died at Washington, Dutchess, New York after 1790. He married Elizabeth Finch<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

   8 iv. JOB AUSTIN<\/span> was born abt 1733 and died 11 Aug 1779 (age 46) and is buried at Old Stanwich (Cherry Orchard Cemetery, Greenwich). He was patriot veteran of the Revolutionary War.22<\/a><\/sup>Job Austin (New York, S.23,250), Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, NARA M804, online at Fold3 (accessed 10 Sep 2016).<\/span> Job left a will dated 1779 and proved 23 Mar 1780 naming wife Mary, brothers Levinus and Silas, sisters Mary Austin and Sarah Knapp, sons of deceased brothers Jonathan and John and his namesake Job Austin son of Silas.23<\/a><\/sup>Job Austin Will, late of Greenwich (CT): Abstracts of Stamford Probate Records<\/em> Vol. 5:415, p. 128; online at archive.org; also Hart<\/b> and references therein.<\/span> He married Mary Ferris<\/strong><\/span> daughter of Nathaniel and Keziah (Blackman) Ferris.24<\/a><\/sup>Findagrave #46487367 and #38446859 (Nathaniel and Keziah) Ferris in the Cherry Orchard Cemetery, Stanwich, Fairfield, Connecticut.<\/span> Mary married (2) Joseph Ferris (1735-1810)<\/strong><\/span>. Levinus4<\/sup> (Jonathan3<\/sup> Thomas2<\/sup>, John1<\/sup>) Anson\/Austin<\/span><\/span> was born abt 1727 probably at Greenwich, Fairfield, Connecticut and died probably at Washington, Dutchess, New York after 1790. He married about 1754 Elizabeth Finch<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He married38<\/a><\/sup>Cf \u2018Homick Family Tree\u2019, owner chrissybartman, trees.ancestry.com\/tree\/30518676 (accessed 24 Sep 2016).<\/span> 1773 Polly Palmer<\/strong><\/span>; she was born 1749 and died after 1837.<\/span><\/p>\n

JAMES ANSON<\/span> was born abt 1775 and died 14 Sep 1837 at Washington, Dutchess, New York (intestate will #1563 on file at the Surrogate Court at Poughkeepsie).41<\/a><\/sup>Anson Newsletter<\/b> #5, Aug 1986, p. 2-3 and #4, Jun 1986, p. 1-2 and references therein.<\/span> Never married; his will lists his sibs living in 1837 (brothers: Jonathan, Silas, Robert, William, Cornelius and Arnold and sisters: Polly Mallery, Harriet Hoag, Julia Knickerbocker, Patty Bristol).<\/span><\/p>\n

   17 ii. JONATHAN ANSON<\/span> born abt 1773 and died 13 Oct 1855 at Bellevue, Easton, Michigan.42<\/a><\/sup>Anson Newsletter<\/b> #4, Jun 1986, p. 2-4 and references therein.<\/span> He married (1) Lois Finch<\/strong><\/span> dau of Abe Finch of Dutchess County; she was born abt 1755 and died between 1820 and 1825. The family moved to Ontario County, New York in 1816. He married (2) 23 Mar 1825 at Canandaiqua, Ontario, New York Sarah (Sally) Rumney<\/strong><\/span>; she was born abt 1793. Ten children with Lois (including a son Silas43<\/a><\/sup>Silas Anson Biography: Portrait and Biographical Album of Barry and Eaton Counties Michigan<\/em> (Chapman Bros.: Chicago, 1891) p. 827; identified as b. 1800, married to Susan Uttley and describes his lineage as Jonathan3 Silas2 Silas1.<\/span> b. 1800) and four with Sally. <\/span><\/p>\n

   18 iii. SILAS ANSON<\/span> born abt 1787 of Amenia, Dutchess, New York and died 14 May 1857 at Hopewell, Ontario, New York. He married probably in Dutchess County Esther ____<\/strong><\/span>; she was born abt 1786. By 1816 he had moved to Ontario County, first to Gorham and then Hopewell.44<\/a><\/sup>Anson Newsletter<\/b> #5, Aug 1986, p. 2-3.<\/span> Eight children.<\/span><\/p>\n

   19 iv. ROBERT ANSON<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

   20 v. WILLIAM ANSON<\/span> born abt 1786 and died after 185045<\/a><\/sup>1850 U. S. Census of Hopewell, Ontario, New York, Roll M432_571, Page 229B, Image 462, Family 88, online at Ancestry.com (accessed 1 Oct 2016).<\/span> (living in 1837 at death of brother James).<\/span><\/p>\n

The identity of the three boys is much debated but can now be resolved. Jesse is one, and Asa (b. 1810) has to be another as he returned from Illinois to be executor of Job\u2019s estate in 1836. The third is either Leonard or Joel H. (both were residents of Cuba). In the 1790 Census Silas, Jr. was head of a family of 4 with one son under 16; i. e. Silas (the 3rd) the son was 3 yrs in 1790 and Samuel was abt 11 yrs. Silas (the 3rd) is well established as Silas, Jr.\u2019s son so there appears to be no room for Samuel in this family.<\/span><\/p>\n
