\u00a0 \u00a0 For more than two centuries the Gebhardt family were Swiss\u2014living in Rheinfelden in Canton Aargau and then Basel.1<\/a><\/sup>Kephart I<\/i><\/b>; See Kephart, Calvin I. (now Montgomery County), Pennsylvania; the third Heinrich (hereafter Heinrich1725<\/b>) to northern Philadelphia County; the fourth (Hans) Jacob (b. 1727) to the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia; the 5 and 6th<\/sup> David Andreas (b. 1729) and Nicholas3<\/a><\/sup>An excellent manuscript addition to the Walter Downing Kephart history vide supra<\/i> exists describing descendants of Nicholas Gebhardt of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania:\u00a0 Pester, Lucille Kephart and Nelson, Leola Kephart\u00a0 Addendum: Nicholas Gebhardt (1733-1829)<\/i>; manuscript at FHL US\/CAN 929,273 K441k supp (1992); these authors also indicate Heinrich1699 had 6 immigrating sons.<\/span> (b. 1733) to Carroll Co., Maryland and Cumberland Co. (now Clearfield County), Pennsylvania, respectively.\u00a0 Most of these sons and their children adopted the less-German-sounding name \u2018Kephart\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 The \u2018Capehart\u2019 name, a further derivation of \u2018Kephart\u2019, was used by a certain few members of the immigrating Gebhardt family\u2014only by Heinrich1725<\/b>\u2019s younger children and their children (i. e.<\/i> the children of Andrew and Henry).\u00a0 In the 19th<\/sup> century they lived nearly exclusively in the Philadelphia area (per census) and their genealogy is complicated and confused by the fact that they used a very short list of masculine (and feminine) given names.\u00a0 The primary objective of this essay is to trace all the holders of the name \u2018Capehart\u2019 in the Philadelphia area.\u00a0 All place names in the essay are in Pennsylvania unless otherwise specified.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 The descent of the Kephart I<\/i><\/b>)4<\/a><\/sup>See reference 1.<\/span> and the second by a distant relative Walter D. Kephart in 1976 (hereafter Kephart II<\/i><\/b>).5<\/a><\/sup>See reference 1.<\/span>\u00a0 Calvin Ira Kephart (CIK, 1883-1969) was president of the National Genealogical Society (1928-30 and 1938-1940).\u00a0 He did the bulk of the work in identifying the Gebhardt descendants and possessed voluminous papers and notes at the time of his death.\u00a0 All of these papers were inherited by his close friend and fellow genealogist Milton Rubincam, who apparently did nothing with them.\u00a0 When Rubincam died in 1997 the Kephart papers went to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP).\u00a0 HSP went through them and made them available to patrons in 2008; this author has been through them as much as one can in two days and made copies of Capehart-relevant material (hereafter Kephart III<\/i><\/b>).6<\/a><\/sup>Kephart III<\/i><\/b>; Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Collection GSP 001, 13 boxes, 5 linear feet of paper.\u00a0 Capehart-relevant-material included personal notes, sometimes with markedly different and conflicting versions of the same matter, letters and other correspondence, interviews of living Capeharts (mostly in the Kensington district) made by Mr. Kephart\u2019s hired researcher, Mrs. Gertrude Fryburg of Philadelphia (GF).<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 In 1752 Heinrich1699<\/b>\u2019s sons three and four, (Hans) Jacob and Heinrich Gebhardt (b. 1725), immigrated7<\/a><\/sup>Strassburger, Ralph Beaver Pennsylvania German Pioneers: A Publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia from 1727 to 1808<\/i> (Norristown, PA: Pennsylvania German Society, 1934) Vol. 1, p. 485.<\/span>,8<\/a><\/sup>Egle, William Henry Names of Foreigners Who Took the Oath of Allegiance to the Province and State of Pennsylvania,<\/i> Pennsylvania Archives, ser. 2, vol. 17 (Harrisburg, PA: E. K. Meyers, 1890), p. 359.<\/span> to America arriving in Philadelphia on the St. Andrew<\/i> on the 23 September. \u00a0Heinrich1725<\/b> settled in Frankford, north of Philadelphia where he and his sons worked at a gristmill.\u00a0 Heinrich1725 and his wife (identity unknown) had three children before they left Germany and nine more once they were settled in Frankford.\u00a0 When British troops occupied Philadelphia in 1777 and took over the mill in Frankford, most of the family retreated to Cumberland County, where sons Andrew and Henry \u2018Capehart\u2019 enlisted9<\/a><\/sup>Dickens, Jane Index to Associators and Militia of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania<\/i> {Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Vol. VI} (Westminster, Maryland: Family Line Publications, 1998), p. 15.<\/span> in the Cumberland militia.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 American descendants of Heinrich Gebhardt (b. 1699) are described by Toni Norman in the downloadable database on her website10<\/a><\/sup>Norman<\/i>.<\/span> (hereafter Norman<\/i><\/b>, no updates since 2002).\u00a0 Although well researched, there are no sources and she has no descendants of Heinrich1725<\/b>\u2019 sons Andrew and Henry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Generation A<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 1. \u00a0HeinrichA<\/sup>\u00a0Gebhardt\/Kephart (HeinrichB<\/sup><\/b><\/span>),11<\/a><\/sup>CIK in Kephart III<\/i> consistently maintains Heinrich1725<\/i> used the name Capehart, but this author does not concur.\u00a0 Through most of the correspondence CIK denies the existence of Heinrich\u2019s son Henry b. 1756; in the latest documents however, I believe CIK acknowledged that there must have been a son Henry who went by the name Capehart.<\/span> was born in 1725 in Northern Baden near the Odenwald, Germany which bridges the border between Baden and Hessen.\u00a0 He immigrated to Philadelphia 30 Sep 1754 on the St. Andrew<\/em>\u00a0with his wife12<\/a><\/sup>In the available genealogical literature (family trees) Heinrich\u2019s wife is often listed as \u2018Barbara\u2019, but this author can find no source to support this; it may be a transposition error from the fact that Heinrich1725\u2019s gmother was a \u2018Barbara\u2019.<\/span> and three children.\u00a0 The wife\u2019s name remains unknown.\u00a0 The family were millers and lived on the Widow Sawyer\u2019s farm in Bristol Township, Philadelphia County until seizure of the gristmill (location still unknown) in 1777 by British troops.13<\/a><\/sup>Kephart III<\/i>; from letter (7 Dec 1930) CIK to researcher GF.<\/span>\u00a0 In 1777 they retreated to Cumberland County (James Wright was in the group that left).14<\/a><\/sup>Kephart III<\/i>; from letter (7 Dec 1930) CIK to researcher GF.<\/span>\u00a0 In 1790 he was living in Pine Grove Township, Berks (now Schuylkill Co.; \u2018Henry Gebhart\u2019, household of 9; same township as brother Adam).15<\/a><\/sup>United States Census Office, 1st<\/sup> Census, 1790 U. S. Census of Pennsylvania<\/i> (Spartenburg, SC: Reprint Co. Publishers, 1964), FHL US\/CAN 974.8 X2, p. 38.<\/span>\u00a0 He died before 24 Sep 179316<\/a><\/sup>Hess, Robert L. and Wright, F. Edward 18th<\/sup> Century Records of the German Lutheran Church of Philadelphia (St. Michaels and Zion)<\/i>, Vol. 5: Burials (Lewes, Delaware: Colonial Roots, 2004-2006), p. 1312; she is referred to as \u2018Widow Gebhardt\u2019 indicating he had already passed.<\/span> (date his wife died) with many of his family in the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia that killed 5000 in August or early September, 1793 and was buried in St. Michael\u2019s Cemetery (Zion\u2019s Lutheran), Philadelphia, then twice reinterred\u2014now resting in a mass grave in the Philadelphia Memorial Park at Frazer, Chester County.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Of Heinrich\u2019s male children who had proven issue, the only ones to use the name \u2018Capehart\u2019 were Andrew and Henry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Known children of Heinrich and Mrs. Gebhardt, were as follows:17<\/a><\/sup>See Kephart I<\/i>; interestingly, Kephart II<\/i> omits Heinrich1725\u2019s son Henry (b. 1756) altogether and lists his (Henry\u2019s) dau Elizabeth as offspring of Heinrich1725.\u00a0 This may satisfy Occam\u2019s razor, but it is clearly not in line with the evidence: (1) \u2018Henry Capehart\u2019 was in the Cumberland militia with his older brother Andrew (Heinrich1725 never used the name Capehart); (2) Kephart II<\/i> has Elizabeth born 1772, but this is an estimated b\u2019date for which there is no hard evidence\u2014in the 1800 census, Elizabeth is newly married but her husband James Merkins does not appear in the census so they were probably living with her father (Henry Capehart household was 10), but only two persons were older than 25 in that household leading one to conclude Elizabeth was younger than 25; Kephart I<\/i> has her b\u2019date 1778 which would make her mother (Heinrich1725\u2019s wife) abt 51 at the birth; (3) Elizabeth was raised in Bristol, Bucks and married a fellow from the neighborhood (1778 is a better b\u2019year for her)\u2014a Henry Capehart (her father) appears in the 1790 and 1800 censuses of northern Philadelphia County, Heinrich1725 (his father, \u2018Henry Gebhart\u2019, was living in Berks County in 1790); he died in 1793 in Philadelphia.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hocker, genealogical researcher at Germantown, to CIK: 3 typewritten pages of wildly contradictory data concerning the Stroup family in Philadelphia; good data, but Mr. Hocker makes no attempt to sort out inconsistencies.<\/span> born 1749 in Germany and died of yellow fever 20 Sep 179319<\/a><\/sup>Hess, Robert L. and Wright, F. John) KEPHART<\/span>, born 13 Feb 1751 in Germany; married 1779 Elizabeth Fretz <\/b><\/span>daughter of Jacob and Magdalena Catherine (Nash) Fretz; died 31 Aug 1822 Doylestown, Bucks, Pennsylvania; buried Doylestown Mennonite Church cemetery, Doylestown, Bucks.\u00a0 For more than 15 years (1806-1821) he was the Pastor of the Doylestown Mennonite Church.25<\/a><\/sup>\u2018John Kephert\u2019, 1810 U. Hoff Knight to CIK: cites Mathew Carey\u2019s work on the 1793 yellow fever epidemic and enumerates Capehart\/Gebhardt dead including George Capehart tobacconist, George Capehart and child, Frederick Capehart, cooper, Frederick Capehart, apprentice, Widow Gebhard and dau Rachel Gebhart.<\/span> \u00a0He served in the Pennsylvania (German) militia in Capt. Caleb Armitage\u2019s company (May 24, 1779) and in Capt.
