The Daynes Family of Norwich, Norfolk, England<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Patricia Daynes Bennett, Laurie Jane Daynes Hillyard, Maralyn Daynes Tolman,

  In the first British census (1841 Census of England and Wales) the Ancestry<\/i> algorithm identified just under 2800 individuals in the county of Norfolk with the name Daynes or a similar sounding name. Many descended from a Daynes patriarch John Daynes<\/b> b. 1767<\/b> (wife Ann Harte, see Generation 4<\/i><\/b><\/span> of the DAYNES<\/b><\/span> GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY<\/b><\/span>) of Norwich, Norfolk (see city map, Figure 1); they called themselves Daynes, and Daines, and sometimes Dains. This essay will focus on the descendants of this John Daynes<\/b> b. 1767<\/b> as well as his forebears using DNA to dispel popular misconceptions about the Daynes lineage.<\/span><\/p>\n

  Whereas there are many Daynes in Norfolk as they have been living in Norfolk for at least six centuries or more, we are concerned here about that subset of the Daynes family that gave rise to the three living Daynes, gggdaus of John Daynes<\/b> b. 1767<\/b> and coauthors of this essay. The earliest known Daynes home was located in the oldest part of Norwich\u2014the Thorpe Hamlet\u2014in the right center of the \u2018churches\u2019 figure (Figure 2).<\/span><\/p>\n

  Paper sources provide evidence that Patricia Daynes Bennett (PDB<\/b>), Laurie Jane Daynes Hillyard (LJH<\/b>), and Maralyn Daynes Tolman (MDT<\/b>) are cousins, with Thomas Daynes (1804-1881) as their Common Ancestor (CA<\/span>). There is paper evidence and a primary historical record that Thomas Daynes\u2019 parents were John Daynes and Ann Harte (see DAYNES GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY<\/b><\/span> below).<\/span><\/p>\n

  To provide DNA confirmation of Thomas Daynes parentage, a match search was mounted using the Maiden Surname Strategy<\/i><\/b>,1<\/a><\/sup>The Maiden Surname Strategy<\/i><\/b> <\/b>for DNA matches: when a DNA genome is searched for matches to a selected maiden surname, valid matches are only found if that surname is on the DIRECT line. No valid matches will be found if the surname is on a COLLATERAL line (since one cannot inherit DNA from a collateral ancestor). A \u2018valid match\u2019 is one in which the genealogy of the match is traceable to both the time period and geographical location of the selected maiden surname.<\/span> looking for Hart<\/span> DNA and a birthplace in Norfolk, England<\/span>. PDB<\/b>\u2019s and MDT<\/b>\u2019s DNA as well as the DNA of MDT<\/b>\u2019s <\/b>1C, Laurie Jane Daynes Hillyard (LDH<\/b>) were employed. PDB<\/b> had no Hart DNA, MDT<\/b> had one match and LDH <\/b>had five good matches providing strong evidence of Ann Harte as Thomas Daynes\u2019 mother, see CLUSTER 1<\/b><\/span>. All three DNA sources had many matches with Hart\/Daynes as a CA<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

  There is ample evidence that John Daynes\u2019 parents (1767-1835, married Ann Harte) were James and Sarah (see DAYNES GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY<\/b><\/span> <\/span>below). A family tree on Geneanet suggests, without source, that Sarah\u2019s maiden name was Dyball. To check this out, using the same strategy, a search of the three DNAs for Dyball\/Norfolk, England <\/span>was performed. Interesting results were obtained as shown in CLUSTER 2<\/b><\/span>. Several had confounding2<\/a><\/sup>A confounding surname is one where that particular surname is already a part of an individual\u2019s descendancy in addition to the search<\/i>-surname. The search<\/i> match then could reflect the presence of the search-surname\u2019s DNA OR any one of the other confounding surname\u2019s DNA.<\/span> surnames. The results of the Dyball match search of the three DNAs show that Dyball is on the direct line of descendance, most probably through the wife of James Daynes, father of John Daynes b. 1767<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

  A marriage record3<\/a><\/sup>Danny\/Denny Dyball marriage: England Marriages 1538-1973; online at FamilySearch<\/i>, https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:NN2V-F5B<\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> for James Danny\/Denny and Sarah Dyball in Dec 1766 at Shotesham St. Mary, Norfolk was found (see Figure 3).4<\/a><\/sup>A search for christenings in Norfolk 1765-1790 found no children of James and Sarah Denny\/Danny.<\/span> It is tempting to believe that Denny\/Danny is really \u2018Daynes\u2019. Of particular interest are the witnesses: David Columbine, Mary Dyball, Martha Dyball and Rebecca Dyball.<\/span><\/p>\n

  Further investigation of the Dyball genealogy (see JOHN DYBALL GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY<\/b><\/span> <\/span>at the end of the essay) reveals that David Columbine (1733-1819) was the husband of Theodora Martha Dyball (viz<\/i>. the \u2018nchurchward59\u2019 match). A marriage notice5<\/a><\/sup>England Marriages 1538-1973, Marriage Notice; online at FamilySearch<\/i>, https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:NFPW-RXX<\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> for David and Theodora (she was a minor and required her father\u2019s consent to marry) describes her as \u2018a single woman with the consent of Theodora\u2019s father John Dyball\u2019. Their actual marriage record6<\/a><\/sup>Columbine\/Dyball marriage: England Marriages 1538-1973; online at FamilySearch<\/i>, https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:NXJ7-3HS<\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> at St. George Colegate, Norwich has John Dyball and Martha Dyball (her mother?) as witnesses; her mother also witnessed the marriage of Sarah (same signature). Theodora (abt 1740-1816), who was born in Norwich, was the dau of John Dyball (1698-1767) and Martha Collcock (1707-1783).7<\/a><\/sup>Dyball\/Colcock marriage: England Marriages 1538-1973, 1 Sep 1726 at St. Mary in the Marsh, Norwich; online at FamilySearch<\/i>, https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:N2W3-M2B<\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> Sarah then was a sister of Theodora; Mary and Rebecca are probably sisters or possible cousins (cf<\/i>. father John, mother \u2018Elizabeth\u2019).8<\/a><\/sup>Sarah \u2018Dybald\u2019 christening record 30 Mar 1733 at St. George Colegate, online at FamilySearch;<\/i> https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:JW25-LJK<\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  There is a possibility that John Dyball had a dau Sarah that was born much earlier in 1718 (John would have been 20 yrs); this Sarah would have been 44 yrs at her marriage to Denny (this would explain why there are no children christened). There is a burial record for a \u2018Sarah Dyball Denny\u2019 30 Jun 1791 (age 72-72; buried at St. George Colegate (John\u2019s parish).9<\/a><\/sup>Findagrave #269724266.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  As a proof or confirmation of this particular Dyball lineage, a Maiden Surname Strategy<\/i> match search for the surname Colcock<\/span> (and similar surnames) in Norfolk, England <\/span>was performed for all three DNA\u2019s. There were NO MATCHES! Are we in trouble here?\u2014certainly not! The Dyball surname is part of our direct descendance, but the Colcock surname is not. In other words, we just have the wrong Dyball family and also proof that the proposal that James Denny\/Danny as a Daynes (Figure 3) is a fantasy!<\/span><\/p>\n

  All is not lost; we just need to find another Sarah Dyball, which as it turns out is no problem as this is a popular name among the Dyball families in Norfolk. The proposed James Daynes, hypothetical father of John Daynes b. 1767,<\/b> was christened 1744 at Stibbard, Norfolk (NW of Norwich) and lived\/died in Norwich\u2014so his wife-to-be Sarah Dyball would probably be born about the same time. Also, in addition to the birthyear restraint, the Sarah Dyball should be born in or near Stibbard or Norwich in Norfolk. The best candidate found (a Parish Register search) is Sarah Dybal christened10<\/a><\/sup>There are two christening records for the same event\u2014one in Ridlington (1 Jul 1744, Norfolk, England, Church of England Baptism, Marriages, and Burials 1535-1812, FHL Film 894719; online at Ancestry<\/i>) and one in Norwich (1 Jul 1744, Norfolk, Bishop\u2019s Transcripts 1579-1935 FHL Film 1545210, online at Ancestry<\/i>). The actual christening of Sarah, dau of Nathaniel and Sarah Watson Dibal probably occurred in Ridlington.<\/span> 1 Jul 1744 in Norwich or Ridlington (20 miles NNE of Norwich), dau of Nathaniel and Sarah Watson Dybal. Only the LDH<\/b> DNA was searched for matches to the surname Watson<\/span> in Norfolk England <\/span>(since she seems to have a lot more Daynes DNA); see CLUSTER 3<\/b><\/span>. These seven matches is strong evidence that this is the correct Dybal family whose dau Sarah married James Daynes. Sarah\u2019s father Nathaniel Dybal was probably the son of Robert and Mary Dybal of Horsey, Norfolk, christened11<\/a><\/sup>England, Births and Christenings 1538-1975; online at FamilySearch<\/i>, https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:N58Q-VYH<\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> 30 Nov 1707. Apparently, he did not marry Sarah Watson but had several children by her that were sometimes called bastards at their christenings in the parish register. The children were Nathaniel chr 11 May 1740 (died young), Sarah chr 1 Jul 1744, Mary chr 4 May 1746, and Elizabeth chr 24 Jan 1747.12<\/a><\/sup>Norfolk. England, Bishop\u2019s Transcripts 1579-1935, FHL Film 1545210; online at Ancestry<\/i>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  Now that we have unequivocally established James and Sarah Dybal Daynes as John\u2019s parents, it should be straightforward to obtain DNA evidence supporting the traditional and often published parents of James\u2014William and Susannah Gre\u00dfham (Gressham\/Gresham) Daynes of Stibbard, Norfolk. William and Susannah were married13<\/a><\/sup>Daines\/Gressham marriage: England Marriages 1539-1973 (the Ancestry<\/i> image states they were both of the Stibbard parish); online at Ancestry,<\/i> see the image at Norfolk, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials 1535-1812 also FamilySearch<\/i>, (no image) https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:NFJN-XMH<\/u><\/span><\/a> also Bishop\u2019s Transcripts England, Norfolk 1685-1941(Stibbard) https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:NFCB-FJ5<\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> 20 Jun 1735 in Stibbard (20 miles NW of Norwich). James had a sister Susannah who was christened14<\/a><\/sup>England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1991, names parents William and Susanna; online at FamilySearch, <\/i>https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:NT6Q-C5J<\/u><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> 10 Feb 1739 at Stibbard, Norfolk.15<\/a><\/sup>She may have married 7 Aug 1764 at All Saints and St. Peter, Weasenham, Norfolk Robert Bond<\/b><\/span>. There is a marriage record of a Susanna Daines marrying a John Brower on 12 Mar 1775 in Great Yarmouth (directly E of Norwich), Norfolk, but in the parish register record it states she was of that parish<\/b> (not Stibbard, 21 miles NW of Norwich). In another marriage record (15 Mar 1775) there is a Susanna Daines, dau of Christopher and Susanna Daines, who married a John Brower and had at least three children (one they named Christopher). See https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/22112\/person\/1972813944\/facts<\/u><\/span><\/a>; and sources cited therein; owner: newpatburrows.<\/span> James may have been born 1737, but was christened16<\/a><\/sup>England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1991 and Bishop\u2019s Transcript Records, names parents William and Susanna Daines; online at FamilySearch, <\/i>https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:JQSB-R4R<\/u><\/span><\/a>. Images are only available for the Bishop\u2019s Transcript Records and there is only a single page.<\/span> 3 Jun 1744 at Stibbard, Norfolk. Unfortunately, there is also a burial17<\/a><\/sup>Norfolk, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials 1535-1182; online at Ancestry.<\/i><\/span> record for James Daines 5 Nov 1746 in Stibbard which casts a HUGE shadow over this James Daines as a possible husband of our Sarah Dyball. Records of the area are spotty and begin after 1720.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

  It would be nice to have some confirming DNA evidence that Wm and Susannah Gresham are NOT the parents of James, the husband of Sarah Dybal. A match search of all three DNA\u2019s for Gresham<\/span> in Norfolk, England <\/span>(and similar names) gave interesting results: the PDB <\/b>DNA <\/b>had no Gresham\/Norfolk matches. The LDH<\/b> DNA had two matches (one was private and therefore useless) and the other had confounding surnames and was therefore also useless as a proof. The MDT <\/b>DNA <\/b>had only one match (\u2018Sam Pyatt\u2019, 12cM,18<\/a><\/sup>The \u2018Pyatt\u2019 match (Ancestry,<\/i> Wass Family Tree, no sources) had Susannah Gresham (b. 28 Mar 1708 at Swanton Novers, Norfolk; m. Samuel Chester) mother of thirteen children there (born 1734-1755, FamilySearch Family Tree<\/i>). Stibbard is about 4 miles SW of Swanton Novers.<\/span> but with a confounding surname Watson) and therefore was also not a proof. At this point with no proofs available, we must abandon Wm and Susannah Gresham Daines as our James\u2019 parents (married Sarah Dybal); Wm and Susannah are NOT on the direct line <\/i>but are on a collateral line.<\/span><\/p>\n

  A search for a James Daynes born in Norfolk around 1740 gave another candidate: James Daines born 1737 at Brandon Parva, Norfolk (immediately W of Norwich) the son of Isaac and Martha Clarke Daines. There was a well-researched tree on Ancestry<\/i> that had also made the connection of this James of Brandon Parva to John Daynes b. 1767<\/b> (\u2018Moss Family Tree\u2019 owner: Lauran Moss19<\/a><\/sup>Hereafter Moss Family Tree <\/b>(owner: Lauran Moss on Ancestry<\/i>).<\/span>). A match search of the 3 DNAs for Clarke<\/span> in Norfolk, England <\/span>gave many matches: the PDB<\/b> DNA was unusable as she had a maternal Clarke line as well as a possible paternal one; the MDT<\/b> DNA had 28 matches; and the LDH<\/b> DNA had an incredible 48 matches. As valid matches were identified, it was noted that there were a couple of \u2018Clarke clusters\u2019\u2014one around Dereham (N of Wramplingham\/Brandon Parva and another at Banham (SW of Wramplingham\/Brandon Parva (see <\/span>Cluster 4<\/b><\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

  It appears that the DNA of the 3 gggdau\u2019s supports the Daynes family descendance from Isaac Daines b. 1710 of Wramplingham, Norfolk.<\/span><\/p>\n
