Generation One<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Thomas Terry<\/b><\/a>, born about 16531<\/a><\/sup>Calc\u2019d from the birthyear of oldest son Jasper.<\/span> of Middletown, Bucks, Pennsylvania;2<\/a><\/sup>24 Jan 1701, a Thomas Terry purchased 100 acres of land in Bristol Township identified in the 1714 entry of Jasper Terry; recorded 18 Jun 1705, Philadelphia Patent Book A, Vol. 2, pp. 57-58.      Thomas and Sarah (Bowden) Terry had four known children, all probably born in Bucks:15<\/a><\/sup>Jasper was the eldest, but the birth order of the other three children is arbitrary. Davis, John David, main author, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, deed records 1684-1763<\/i> (Bowie, Maryland: Heritage Books, 1997), p. 145 (P. 91, 22 Oct 1714, \u2018Jasper and Susannah Terry, (eldest son and heir of Thomas Terry, yeoman, of Bristol Twp))\u2019.<\/span>,16<\/a><\/sup>Bucks is Bucks County, Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  + 2   i. JASPER TERRY<\/span>, born abt 1675 of Bucks, Pennsylvania. He married Susannah____<\/b><\/span> of Bucks County.<\/span><\/p>\n

  + 3  ii. CLEMENT TERRY<\/span>, born abt 1677 of Bucks, Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/p>\n

  + 4 iii. THOMAS TERRY<\/span>, a cooper, was born abt 1679 of Southampton Twp, Bucks, Pennsylvania. He married Mary____<\/b><\/span> of Bucks County.<\/span><\/p>\n

  + 5 iv. JOSHUA TERRY<\/span>, b. abt 1681 in Bucks County.<\/span><\/p>\n

     Thomas\u2019 origins are unknown, but DNA evidence has shown the Bucks County Terrys are very closely related to the Southold Long Island Terrys (see essay on this website: \u2018Addendum 1: Analysis of Y-DNA Markers Relevant to Thomas Terry of Bucks b 1653\u2019). Another essay, \u2018Origins of Thomas Terry, b. abt 1653\u2019, is in preparation). He and his posterity over the next 2-3 generations had strong associations with the Society of Friends<\/i> (Quakers).<\/span><\/p>\n

ASSUMPTIONS<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

     It is probably a good assumption that virtually all Terrys in Bucks County up to the twentieth century are descended from this Thomas Terry, b. abt 1653 and this genealogical essay is based on that assumption. Exceptions to this assumption are noted in the essay with reasons for exclusion from this family. In support of the assumption it should be noted that in the 1850 through the 1900 censuses of Bucks County, there is no Terry not born in Pennsylvania<\/b>. Therefore, the known Terry families of Massachusetts (2), New York (L.I.), and Virginia did not migrate to Bucks County during this period.<\/span><\/p>\n

     It is also probably a good assumption that there were fewer migrating Terrys in the 17th and 18th centuries than in the 19th. Bucks County was and is desirable farmland and was settled for the most part in the late 17th and early 18th century; people looking for tillable land after that time were more likely to go to the Western Reserve (Ohio) as did several of the Bucks County Terrys. There are Terrys in the Philadelphia County<\/i> 19th century censuses who were not born in Pennsylvania, but these are for the most part not migrating American Terrys, but Irish emigrants. This genealogy attempts to incorporate all known<\/u> Terry evidence in Bucks County to date, but some of the family connections are therefore of necessity somewhat fanciful; effort has been made to identify these connections appropriately.<\/span><\/p>\n

Generation Two<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

    2. Jasper Terry (Thomas1<\/sup>)<\/b><\/a> was born abt 167517<\/a><\/sup>Approximated from date of land record.<\/span>,18<\/a><\/sup>Jasper Terry of Bristol Twp in Bucks, yeoman, and Susannah, his wife, greeting. William Penn, Esq., Proprietary and Governor, by patent dated 24th day of the 1st month 1701, granted to Thomas Terry late of the said place deceased, a certain parcel of about 100 acres of land in Bristol Twp, bounded by Edmond Lovett, vacant land, John Hiett, Anthony Burton, Phineas Pemberton, as by the patent recorded in Philadelphia in Patent Book A, Vol. 2, pp. 57-8. Now know that Jasper Terry (eldest son and heir of said Thomas Terry deceased) and said Susannah Terry (wife of the said Jasper Terry), for 72 pounds 10 shillings, sell to John Bown of Bucks, husbandman, the 100 acres of land. Signed Oct. 22, 1714; Jasper Terry (his mark) and said Susannah Terry; witness: William Baldwin, Edmond Lovett, Edmond Lovett, Jr. Recorded Apr. &, 1715, Bucks County Book 5, p. 91.<\/span> in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He married in 1710 in Bucks, Pennsylvania Susannah ____<\/b><\/span> of Bucks, Pennsylvania. She was born abt 1689.19<\/a><\/sup>John David Davis, main author, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, deed records 1684-1763<\/i> (Bowie, Maryland: Heritage Books, 1997), p. 145 (p. 91, 22 Oct 1714, \u2018Jasper and Susannah Terry, (eldest son and heir of Thomas Terry, yeoman, of Bristol Twp)\u2019.<\/span> Jasper of Bristol Township sold his father\u2019s patent in Falls Township in 1714 to John Bown (recorded Apr 7, 1715), witnessed by Edmond Lovett, Edmond Lovett, Jr. and William Baldwin.20<\/a><\/sup>Jasper Terry Deed transfer: Bucks County Pennsylvania Deed Book 5, 1713-1731<\/i> (T.L.C.      Jasper and Susannah Terry had three21<\/a><\/sup>Only two children are proven, son Jasper (8) could be a son of any of the four sons of Thomas (1)<\/span> children all born in Bucks County:<\/span><\/p>\n

  6 i. THOMAS TERRY<\/span> was born 1711, Makefield Township, Bucks, Pennsylvania; died 22 May 1792 Southampton, Bucks, Pennsylvania. He married Jane Neeld<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

  7 ii. JOHN TERRY<\/span> was born 1713 Middletown, Bucks, Pennsylvania; died 1789 Wrightstown, Bucks, Pennsylvania. He married (1) Rachel Heston Lacey<\/b><\/span> and (2) Sarah Walmsley<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 + 8 iii. JASPER TERRY<\/span> was born abt 1715 of Falls Township, Bucks, Pennsylvania. He married 29 Jul 1735 at New Jersey Mary Hart<\/b><\/span> daughter of Thomas and Ester (Miles) Hart of Falls Township, Bucks County.<\/span><\/p>\n

    3. Clement Terry (Thomas1<\/sup>)<\/b><\/a> was born abt 167722<\/a><\/sup>A Clement Terry pled not guilty to a charge 13 Sep 1709 and served on a jury 11 Jun 1730, Bucks County PA Records of the Court of Quarter Sessions and Common Pleas, 1700-1730, pp. 429, 551.<\/span> in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and died 1763 in Bristol Borough, Bucks.23<\/a><\/sup>There are two inventories and letters of administration for two Clement Terrys (Bristol Twp. and Bristol Borough); the one who lived in Bristol Borough died in 1763 and was married to Anne; Croft Antecedants<\/b> p. 138, footnote 20.<\/span> He married Anne ____<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

     Clement Terry and his wife had at least two children probably born in Bucks County:<\/span><\/p>\n

 + 9 i. CLEMENT TERRY Jr.<\/span>, a carpenter, was born abt 1700 in Bucks County and died after 1784 in Bristol Twp, Bucks. He married 17 Jul 1721 at the Presbyterian Church, Abington, Philadelphia County Jane Johnson<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

  10 ii. ABRAHAM TERRY<\/span> of Bristol Twp, Bucks County.24<\/a><\/sup>Abraham lived close to the two Clements (father and son) and was bondsman for both of them, Croft Antecedants<\/b>, p. 138, footnote 20 and references cited therein.<\/span> It is not known whether he had a family, but he does not appear in the censuses or tax records of the period.<\/span><\/p>\n

    4. Thomas Terry (Thomas1<\/sup>)<\/b><\/a>, a cooper, was born abt 1679 of Southampton Twp, Bucks, Pennsylvania. He bought and sold land there (1714, 1730).25<\/a><\/sup>John David Davis, main author, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, deed records 1684-1763<\/i> (Bowie, Maryland: Heritage Books, 1997), p. 355 (P. 506, 5 Jun 1758, \u2018Bristol twp…line\u2026of Thomas Terry\u2019) and p. 144 (P.76, 25 Mar 1715, \u2018line of..Thomas Terry..)\u2019. A Thomas Terry bought 70 acres in Southampton Twp in 1714 and sold it again in 1730, Bucks County Deeds, vol. 15, pp. 207 and 210; cited in Croft Antecedants<\/b>.<\/span> He married Mary____<\/b><\/span> of Bucks County. He probably had children in Southampton Township.<\/span><\/p>\n

    5. Joshua Terry (Thomas1<\/sup>)<\/b><\/a> b. abt 1681 in Bucks County. He was a witness to a land record in 1706.26<\/a><\/sup>Charlotte D. Meldrum, compiler, Abstracts of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Land Records, 1684-1723<\/i> (Westminister, Maryland: Family Line Publications, 1995), p. 120; abstract no. 300, Witn: Joshua Terry, 27 Dec 1706; FHL US\/CAN 974.821 R2m.<\/span> He probably had children in Makefield Township.<\/span><\/p>\n

Generation Three<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

     Due to the paucity of available primary sources for this period, descendant assignments have been very difficult. What assignments have been made are consistent with Pennsylvania Septennial Censuses27<\/a><\/sup>Pennsylvania, Septennial Census, 1779-1863, Box 1026, microfilm 14 rolls, Records of the House of Representatives, General Assembly, Record Group 7, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Harrisburg, PA; database online at ancestry.com (accessed 23 May 2016); hereafter PA Septennial Census<\/b>.<\/span> (tax records) and with the U. S. Censuses of Eastern Pennsylvania of the period 1790-1840.<\/span><\/p>\n

    8. Jasper Terry (Jasper2<\/sup> Thomas1<\/sup>)<\/b><\/a> born abt 1715 of Falls Township, Bucks, Pennsylvania.28<\/a><\/sup>The choice of Jasper b. abt 1675 as Jasper Terry\u2019s father is arbitrary (he could as well be son of Clement, Thomas, or Joshua). The name Jasper is unusual and does not occur in any of the other American Terry genealogies of the time period except the Virginia Terrys and then only after this Jasper had moved there with his in-laws, the Harts. Considering naming patterns of the time, a father naming his son Jasper after himself is slightly more likely than naming him Jasper after a brother.<\/span> He married29<\/a><\/sup>New Jersey, Marriage Records 1683-1801, New Jersey State Archives, online at Ancestry.com (accessed 23 Mar 2012); for Mary Hart\u2019s parentage see Spruell 4748 \u2018Jasper Terry & Mary Hart, m July 29, 1735\u2019 (accessed 15 June 2018).<\/span> 29 Jul 1735 at New Jersey Mary Hart<\/b><\/span> daughter of Thomas and Ester (Miles) Hart of Warminster Township, Bucks County. He (and cousin William) bought30<\/a><\/sup>Probate record 13 Dec 1744: Virginia Land, Marriage, and Probate Records, 1639-1850, abstracted from Lyman Chalkley Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement of Virginia, 1745-1800<\/i> (Virginia: M. S. Lockwood, 1912) Vol. 3, p. 9; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 15 Sep 2018).<\/span> land 13 Dec 1744 in Augusta County, Virginia (at that time Augusta County was immense including present Botetourt).<\/span><\/p>\n

     Thomas \u201cthe Elder\u201d Hart was born 1685 at Byberry Township, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were very active Quakers. Mary was their oldest born abt 1718 at Warminster, Bucks, Pennsylvania. They had other children: (2) Aaron born 1733 at Augusta County, Virginia, (3) Thomas Hart (md Mary Morgan<\/b><\/span>), (4) Miles Hart born abt 1737 (md Delilah<\/b><\/span>).31<\/a><\/sup>Spruell, James \u2018Jasper Terry & Mary Hart, m July 29, 1735\u2019 at Genealogy.com forum (www.genealogy.com\/forum\/surnames\/topics\/terry\/4748<\/u>) Spruell (4748)<\/b> (accessed 15 June 2018).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

     Jasper and Mary followed her father south to Botetourt County, Virginia; no more is discovered of them in Bucks County.32<\/a><\/sup>In 1739 Jasper Terry purchased a cow from Samuel Worthington (today near Charles Town, WV), and was working in Orange County, Virginia.<\/span>,33<\/a><\/sup>This author thought it was possible that the Jasper Terry married to Mary Hart is the same as the one who married to Mary Morrison and who fathered Josiah Terry in 1755 in Virginia; Y-DNA<\/b> data do not support this as Jasper Terry\/Mary Morrison descendants are Haplotype G lineage 2, not the Bucks County Terry Y-DNA type of Haplotype I lineage 2. Perhaps Mary Hart Terry died and Jasper left him with his brother family to raise while he dashed off to Virginia with his in-laws.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

     Jasper and Mary (Hart) Terry had a son:<\/span><\/p>\n

  11 i. JOSEPH TERRY<\/span>, born abt 1737 of Bucks, Pennsylvania; apparently raised by his uncle John Terry.34<\/a><\/sup>John Terry\u2019s 1788 Will<\/i>: Acknowledges the presence of \u2018Joseph Terry, a nephew\u2019 (who ran John\u2019s farm). We have a problem here\u2014if Joseph really was a nephew, then he must be Jasper\u2019s son or father Jasper (b. 1675) must have had another child we don\u2019t know about, because if Joseph were Thomas\u2019s son and her brother, Susanna would surely have mentioned it in her will (see Susanna\u2019s Will<\/i>) as she was so scrupulous about naming all descendants. Croft Antecedants<\/b> indicates that \u2018nephew\u2019 is wrong, and Joseph is actually David Terry\u2019s son (Thomas\u2019 grandson, 17, b. 1774, Addendum 2); this suggestion is also untenable as he would have been an infant when then tax rolls of the 1770\u2019s describe him as a single man on the John Terry farm.<\/span>,35<\/a><\/sup>Joseph also appears in the tax rolls living with uncle John as discussed in Croft Antecedants<\/b>, p. 138, 140 and Appendix VIII, Terry Family Tax Records 1779-1787, pp. 231-232.<\/span>,36<\/a><\/sup>McNeely, T. There are three of them to worry about in Virginia in this time period: Jasper #1 (b. 1715 md Mary Hart), Jasper #2 (b.1742 of Botetourt, md Mary Morrison), Jasper #3 (William\u2019s son b. abt 1760 md Ruth). The Jasper, friend of William\u2019s who worked with him, has to be his cousin (#1)\u2014the other two are unborn or too young. This is the one (#1) who was given acreage on the Roanoke River at Mud Lick Run. The Jasper #2 who married Mary Morrison left no real records in Botetourt, but lived in neighboring Montgomery County and died there abt 1826; by he is not a relative of William\u2019s (see Terry Addendum 1.; www.29deadpeople.com<\/u>; William is Haplogroup I\u2014descendant of Thomas Terry of Bucks b. 1853\u2014and Jasper is Haplogroup G). Look at the children\u2019s names: William and Rachel are the only ones who named a son Miles after William\u2019s work companion Miles Hart; Wm\u2019s son Jasper #3 had a son Miles as well.<\/span> and Jasper\u2019s brothers-in-law (Miles and Aron Hart) and the Brown family (they are all Quakers).56<\/a><\/sup><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The second is comprised of those \u2018cousins\u2019 (see \u2018Addendum 1. Analysis of Terry Y-DNA Markers\u2019, this website) that are probable descendants of the Southold (Long Island, New York) Terrys, but who lived and generated sources in or near Bucks County.<\/span><\/p>\n

Group 1. These Terrys of Bucks County are likely the 2nd great- grandsons or great-grandsons of Thomas Terry (b. abt 1653) of Bucks by unknown linkage through his sons Clement Terry (3) b. abt 1677, Thomas Terry (4) b. abt 1679, or Joshua Terry (5) b. abt 1681. It is not likely that any are descended through the first son Jasper (2).<\/span><\/p>\n

It was originally believed that Sarah Ashburn was a second wife to Thomas Terry, son of Thomas and Jane (Neeld) Terry. However, that Thomas\u2019 wife Olly Davis died 1841 and is buried at Pennepack, Philadelphia County. Susanna Terry\u2019s will (a dau of Thomas and Jane (Neeld) Terry vide supra<\/i> indicates Olly was a widow in 1805 and does not name Thomas_of_Ohio\u2019s boys that were born in Bucks before Susanna died. Therefore there must be two Thomas Terry\u2019s of Bucks, both born abt 1749.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have a problem here\u2014if Joseph really was a nephew, then he must be Jasper\u2019s son or father Jasper (b. 1675) must have had another child we don\u2019t know about, because if Joseph were Thomas\u2019s son and her brother, Susanna would surely have mentioned it in her will (see Susanna\u2019s Will<\/i>) as she was so scrupulous about naming all descendants. Croft Antecedants<\/b> indicates that \u2018nephew\u2019 is wrong, and Joseph is actually David Terry\u2019s son (Thomas\u2019 grandson, 17, b. 1774, Addendum 2); this suggestion is also untenable as he would have been an infant when then tax rolls of the 1770\u2019s describe him as a single man on the John Terry farm.<\/span><\/p>\n

206. Influenced by the \u2018Heston\u2019name (now shown to be of little importance), Rachel was originally placed in the John Terry lineage since John Terry b. 1713 married Rachel Heston Lacey. But there are good reasons why this cannot be: (1) There is no proof of the middle name \u2018Heston\u2019 which would link her to the John Terry family, (2) Secondly, Rachel\u2019s dau, Annie Montanye has shown up as a match in the at-DNA<\/b> of Ronald Lee Terry of Tennessee (RLTerry). Since the John Terry after John Lacey Terry (b. 1777) does not carry the Terry DNA (see John Terry essay, Addendum 3), it is clearly impossible that Rachel is a John Terry descendant. Other RLTerry at-DNA<\/b> matches are consistent with him as a descendant of the Thomas or Clement\/Joshua line, but clearly not the John Terry line (see Addendum 1).<\/span><\/p>\n
