Tolman, Ph. D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.2;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;This essay will focus on identifying the unknown father of Catherine \u2018Katie\u2019 Wurthmann Voigt (1899-1949).  Katie\u2019s mother, Catherine Gesena \u2018Sennie\u2019 Wurthmann Voigt, was born in 1877; she was intellectually compromised (we don\u2019t know how severely) and institutionalized in the late 1890\u2019s near Charleston, South Carolina<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002080000000000000000_3140\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Personal communication from the author <b>JWP<\/b>.  This includes personal letters and documents about Katie\u2019s admission to the Charleston Orphan House, records held in the Charleston County Public Library. <\/span>  in Clinton, Laurens County and then again near the end of life and yet gave birth to a dau in 1899, father unknown.  As an inmate at such an institution she would presumably only have had outside access to family and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.2;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In the 1900 U. S. Census<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002080000000000000000_3140\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">1900 U. S. Census of Charleston, South Carolina 12th Ward, Spring Street, Roll 1521, Page 7, E. D. 0114, Family 124, Catherine Voigt (head, age 50, widow, 2 of 3 children alive), Dick (son, age 24), Sennie (dau, 22), Katie (gdau, age 1); online at <i>Ancestry<\/i>. <\/span>  of the Charleston South Carolina 12th Ward Sennie and her one-year-old dau were living with her mother Catherine and her brother Dick. In the 1910 U. S. Census<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002080000000000000000_3140\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">1910 U. S. Census of Charleston, South Carolina 7th Ward, Mary Street, Roll T624_1452, page 3, E.D. 0039. FHL Microfilm 1375465; Anna Schleppergrell (head, widow), Katie (age 21, dau), son Julius (age 19), Katherine Voigt (age 60, widow, stepmother) and Gesena Voigt (age 33, single, stepsister), plus two boarders online at <i>Ancestry<\/i>. <\/span> mother Catherine and dau Sennie were living with Catherine\u2019s step-dau Anna (head of household) and Anna\u2019s son Julius (6) and dau Katie (5) in the 7th Ward of Charleston, South Carolina.  Sennie\u2019s dau Katie is not findable in the 1910 census, presumably as she was in the Charleston Orphan House.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002080000000000000000_3140\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\">According to family tradition (JWP), Katie was raised in a state institution (orphanage) until age 20 when she became a secretary for the Red Cross in Charleston.  Records of the Charleston Orphan House (copy in possession of <b>JWP<\/b>) indicate Katie was admitted to the orphanage at age 2 years 7 months on July 20, 1901. <\/span>  Sennie went back to the mental institution in Clinton after her stepsister Anna remarried in 1924 and remained there until her death in 1942.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.2;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The DNA matches of Katie\u2019s ggdau Jennifer Wolfe Paddock (<b>JWP<\/b>) were examined.  Searches for various collateral surnames in South Carolina produced an interesting result. There were 3 matches for <a style=\"color: #4f81bd;\">Schleppegrell\/South Carolina<\/a>\u2014Catherine\u2019s stepsister Anna had married Johann August Schleppegrell (see <a style=\"color: #4f81bd;\"><b>Cluster 1<\/b><\/a>).  As Schleppegrell is a collateral surname, there is no way for <b>JWP<\/b> to inherit this DNA except as a direct descendant of a Schleppegrell. A survey of ages and residence locations of Schleppegrell males in 1899 concluded that the likely father of Katie was her mother Sennie\u2019s brother-in-law John August Schleppegrell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/29deadpeople.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/voigt1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.2;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;This resolves the DNA problem of the missing father. The observation that John August was committed to a lunatic asylum abt 1900 may be evidence that his role in Katie\u2019s birth was known by the family and perhaps also the civil authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.2;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;We have traced the lives of all the participants in this family tragedy except for John August Schleppegrell.  He is found in the 1900 Census<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"5\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002080000000000000000_3140\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-5\">5<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-5\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"5\">1900 U. S. Census of Columbia, Richland, South Carolina, Roll 1540, Page 4, E. D. 0125; J. A. Schleppegree, age 41, patient; online at <i>Ancestry<\/i>.  <\/span> as an inmate of the South Carolina State Hospital (lunatic asylum) in Columbia, Richland, South Carolina. This is an inpatient hospital for the mentally ill; a patient is admitted to the hospital through the criminal justice system.  John August died within a year in 1901 at age 42.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.2;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;A search of <b>JWP<\/b> DNA matches for <a style=\"color: #4f81bd;\">Lohmann\/Germany<\/a> (John August Schleppegrell\u2019s mother\u2019s maiden name) produced 15 matches but these were all confounded by Kornahrens ancestor DNA (the Kornahrens married into the Wolfe line as well as the Schleppegrell line) so they do not constitute a proof of Schleppegrell linkage. However, a search of <b>JWP<\/b> DNA for <a style=\"color: #4f81bd;\">von Dohlen\/Germany<\/a> (John August Schleppegrell\u2019s gm\u2019s maiden name)  produced 5 matches.  This does constitute another proof of the Schleppegrell descendance as the von Dohlen line is exclusive to the Schleppegrell lineage (see <a style=\"color: #4f81bd;\"><b>Cluster 2<\/b><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/29deadpeople.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/voigt2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.2;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a problem with the identification of Sennie and Anna\u2019s father John Voigt.  Ancestry trees vary widely about the vita of this individual.  It is clear<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002080000000000000000_3140\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\">John Henry Voigt is the only Voigt (Voight, Voigts, Vogt, and other spellings) in the 1860 and 1870 U. S. Censuses of South Carolina.  His naturalization documents on 21 Jul 1871 in Charleston state he immigrated in 1855 from Hannover, Prussia and witnesses state he lived in Charleston from that time [Selected U. S. Naturalization Records, Original Documents 1790-1974, South Carolina, District Court (Roll 1), catalog no. 2838796); online at <i>Ancestry<\/i>].  His death record (note 47) in 1879 confirms his name, age at death 44y 7m and origin in Hannover.  His dau Anna\u2019s obit (note 58) also confirms his name as John H. Voigt. <\/span> from the written record that his birth name was Johann Heinrich Voigt (John Henry Voigt) and that he was born abt 1835 in Hannover, Prussia and died in 1879 at Charleston, South Carolina.  His naturalization documents<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000002080000000000000000_3140\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000002080000000000000000_3140-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\">South Carolina, U. S., Naturalization Records, 1868-1991, 21 Jul 1871, Cat. No. 2838796, John Voigts, arrived 1855 from Hannover, age 34; online at <i>Ancestry<\/i>. <\/span> in 1871 confirm that he emigrated from Hannover, Prussia. A search of the Hannover, Prussia parish registers allowed his birth and baptism records in Apr 1833 (see Voigt Genealogical Summary) to be found in Melle, Hannover, Lower Saxony (Melle is now part of Westphalia since 1866).  His parents were Caspar Heinrich and Cathrine Luisa Wittler Voigt. A search of <b>JWP<\/b> DNA matches for <a style=\"color: #4f81bd;\">Wittler\/Hannover<\/a> gave one match (see <a style=\"color: #4f81bd;\"><b>Cluster 3<\/b><\/a>) providing confirmation of the lineage; cf. \u2018Brader Family Tree\u2019 owner: Darla Brader on Ancestry Family Trees.
