He then moved to Ireland before embarking for America and settling in Cumberland County (then Lancaster Co.), Pennsylvania.16Helbron Genealogy.,17Online at wikitree.com/Patton-586#Sources and sources cited therein; hereafter Wikitree. It was a common practice in immigrating to America from Scotland or fleeing from persecution to stop in Ireland for a generation to earn more money before embarking on a ship for Boston.
He married before 1704 at Scotland Matilda Ann Wideman.18ChatGPT: ‘Covenanter and Matthew Patoun’.,19Findagrave #81912063, biography. dau of John Casper Weideman and Elizabeth Cammer.20Gary Patton Genealogy. She may have gone by ‘Mary’21Agricola, section 28.1; at John’s death in 1741, the widow Mary was granted letters of administration. (or she died, and John remarried a Mary).
