Two Duncan Families: Scotland to Pennsylvania and
\nKentucky\/Missouri<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Darlene E. Tolman\u2019s (DET<\/b>) ancestors include TWO Duncan lines as shown below. Both Duncan lines were presumed to originate in Scotland; the Duncans then presumed to have moved to Pennsylvania (18th century) and finally to Kentucky\/Missouri (19th century).<\/span><\/p>\n

Ancestors of Nancy McMurtry Duncan (1805-1861): DNA Analysis<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The DET<\/b> DNA had 32 matches to \u2018Duncan\/Kentucky\u2019 and 26 matches to \u2018Duncan\/Pennsylvania\u2019 with very little overlap. From the Duncan\/KT matches two had as the Common Ancestor (CA) William Duncan (1784-1814);1<\/a><\/sup>Online at www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/12108570 \u2018Notton Family Tree\u2019 owner: bobnotton; (accessed 21 Jan 2024); lori albers has a private tree but lineage for both matches is shown on ThruLines.<\/span> see Cluster 1<\/b><\/span>\u2014therefore proving the Nancy McMurtry Duncan line<\/i> from DET<\/b> to William Duncan (1784-1814). The Duncan\/KT search produced many tantalizing matches to Duncans in Virginia (Kentucky was a part of Virginia before becoming a state in 1792), but a CA could not be identified on the basis of available records.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0None of these matches could be satisfactorily attributed to the \u2018other\u2019 Duncan line, the Mary Duncan (1771-1821) line<\/i>, as they were all in the late 18th century. A search for matches to \u2018Duncan\/Missouri\u2019 produced 16 matches, but relevant Duncans were all in the 19th or 20th century and were therefore useless for this genealogy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A match search was also done for \u2018Bayley\/Massachusetts\u2019 the wife of David Wallace Duncan which returned 22 promising matches (most to 18th century, abt 1750, Massachusetts: 9 to Essex Co. (they mostly immigrated from Wiltshire), 2 to Worcester Co., 2 to Norfolk Co., 1 one to Franklin Co. and 3 to Staffordshire-born Bayleys. Since we don\u2019t know our Mary Bayley\u2019s parentage or origin other than (married in Boston at Trinity Church) Massachusetts, a CA for any of these matches could not be determined. This is an additional strong indication (not a proof) that a Bayley\/Bailey is on DET<\/b>\u2019s direct line.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Similarly, a search for \u2018Henderson\/Kentucky\u2019 produced 24 matches including an 18th century Henderson2<\/a><\/sup>Online at www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/2147582 \u2018Stark Family Tree\u2019 owner: Norm and Rita Dickey and sources cited therein; (accessed 21 Feb 2025).<\/span> descended from the Hendersons of the Fordell region, Fife County, Scotland and Virginia\/Kentucky (see Cluster 2<\/b><\/span>); CA Wm Henderson (1676-1737)\u2014this a proof that Henderson is on DET<\/b>\u2019s direct line). This lineage descends from James Henderson (Henrysoun), a burgess of Edinburgh who established the castle at Fordell, County Fife, a barony granted by King James IV in 1511.3<\/a><\/sup>Wikipedia, search \u2018Fordell Castle\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ancestors of Mary Duncan (abt 1771-1821), wife of James Patton: DNA Analysis.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The first record we have regarding Mary Duncan is the birth of her first child James in 1799 in Kentucky (see Patton essay for details). We have presumed Mary was also born in Kentucky, but this may not be so. The Pattons (and James) came to Kentucky from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania\u2014perhaps that was the origin of Mary Duncan as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The \u2018Julie Dundon\u2019 match from the \u2018Duncan\/PA\u2019 search (see Cluster 3<\/b><\/span>) was intriguing for several reasons. Ancestry ThruLines had identified a Duncan CA for this match, but the genealogy was obscenely faulty. This is further complicated by the fact that Julie Dundon\u2019s own tree only goes back to Effie Elizabeth Duncan 1860-1935)\u2014Ancestry\u2019s computer had extended her line in ThruLInes back to Samuel Duncan (1760-1829), i.e. Effie Elizabeth Duncan (1869-1935)4<\/a><\/sup>Online at www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/109662562 \u2018Reid Family then and now\u2019 owner: Kerrie Bartlett, Berger, Lippman and sources cited therein; (accessed 21 Jan 2024).<\/span> who was the dau of William Henry Duncan (1845-1912)5<\/a><\/sup>Online at www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/75107252 \u2018Dan Parret Family Tree\u2019 owner: Dan Parret and sources cited therein; (accessed 21 Jan 2024).<\/span> who was the son of James Duncan (1810-1870)6<\/a><\/sup>Ibid.<\/i><\/span>, who was the son of Samuel Duncan (1769-1829)7<\/a><\/sup>Online at www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/116496101 \u2018JohnCampbell 2023.combined.ftm_2\u2019 owner: Duncan Campbell11 and sources cited therein; (accessed 21 Jan 2024)\u2019 hereafter Duncan Campbell Tree.<\/span>. Examination of each of these generations for time and place confirmed the lineage, but eliminated each of them as a CA.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0An excellent monograph has been published describing Thomas Duncan and his 6 sons.8<\/a><\/sup>Katherine Duncan Smith The Story of Thomas Duncan and his Six Sons (New York: Tobias A. Wright, 1928) online at FamilySearch; hereafter Katherine Duncan Smith<\/b>.<\/span> Samuel Duncan was the son of David Duncan (1730-1792) and a grandson of this Thomas Duncan (1686-1776) and his wife Jane Grier. Thomas was born in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland and immigrated to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania abt 1740. Examination of the progeny of the six sons identified a Mary Duncan b. abt 1771 in Cumberland County, dau of the third son Stephen and his wife Ann Fox. James Patton was also born in Pennsylvania, probably Cumberland County, so that is where they likely met and may have married. Stephen\u2019s father Thomas Duncan (1686-1776) is therefore the CA for the \u2018Julie Dundon\u2019 match.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A further proof would be nice. A match search of DET<\/b> DNA for \u2018Fox\/Pennsylvania\u2019 returned 48 matches, 4 of which were to 18th century Cumberland\/Westmoreland individuals indicating that the Fox surname is on DET<\/b>\u2019s direct line; a CA was not identified. This is another confirmation of Stephen Duncan (1729-1794)\/Ann Fox (1732-1796) as Mary Patton\u2019s (abt 1771-1821) parents.<\/span><\/p>\n

GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Generation One<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

1.9<\/a><\/sup>Geographical Note: Mason County was formed from Bourbon County in 1788 and Fleming County was formed from Mason County in 1798; therefore, places in Fleming County were originally in Bourbon and later in Mason County (from Animap3). These Kentucky counties were part of Virginia until 1792 when Kentucky became a state.<\/span>,<\/sup>10<\/a><\/sup>About Duncan Families: This Duncan Family lived in Mason County from the time of its formation (1788) to the death of David Duncan (1) in 1826. There is another Duncan Family which came to neighboring Bourbon County, Kentucky in the 18th century from Virginia (they settled close to the county seat: Paris. Kentucky). This family is described well in Julia Spencer Ardery\u2019s, The Duncans of Bourbon County, Kentucky: with notes from other counties). There is no overlap in this book with this Duncan genealogy, but there is mention of a William Duncan of Mason County and his 1828 Will (p.26) where he is assumed to be (incorrectly) of the Virginia family.<\/span> David Wallace Duncan<\/a><\/b> was born before 1725 at Scotland and of Mason County, Kentucky and died 5 Jul 182611<\/a><\/sup>David Duncan 1827 will w\/two codicils; online at FamilySearch: Kentucky Probate Records, Mason County, Will records 1826-1829, vol. G, https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:33SQ-GP3Y-983W?cc=1875188&wc=37RT-K6D%3A173519601%2C173910401l, image 44-46\/257; names children with other supporting information; son William deceased, 7 children; all the children received 1\/8 of the estate except James who got $3 cash and Ennis who got $100; son Joseph executor, dau Nancy to settle any disputes; hereafter David Duncan 1827 Will<\/b>.<\/span> on the \u2018Ohio River some distance above Natchez\u2019.12<\/a><\/sup>The Duncan File, correspondence from Cay Chamness, Research Librarian, the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center, Maysville, Kentucky (82 pages); page 68; obit 7-5-1826, newspaper not disclosed; the museum also has an obit for his wife (Mrs. Duncan, page 69), but the date and source are not clear; hereafter Kentucky Gateway Museum<\/b>.<\/span> He was at the Battle of \u2018Preston Pass\u2019 (Prestonpans) and later at the Battle of Culloden in 1745. He stayed with Prince Charlie until 1746 and then made his way to the American Colonies (through Ireland) as there was a reward for his apprehension in Scotland. He served in the American Army during the Revolution. He settled first in Massachusetts (before 1766) and then moved to Carlisle, Pennsylvania and raised a family there before moving to Mason County, Kentucky (abt 179513<\/a><\/sup>Kentucky Gateway Museum<\/b>, page 81; August 11, appended to sale document, a description of Ennis Duncan\u2019s naturalization stating he came to Mason County in 1795<\/span>).14<\/a><\/sup>Kentucky Gateway Museum<\/b>; page 16; from the \u2018Greer Brown Duncan Biography\u2019.<\/span>] He married (1) unknown<\/b><\/a> (in Ireland after 1746) and had four children before he emigrated to Massachusetts. He married15<\/a><\/sup>Duncan\/Bailey (Bayley) marriage: Massachusetts, U. S., Compiled Marriages 1633-1850, Trinity Church; online at Ancestry and online at FamilySearch https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:FCQ1-85V.<\/span> (2) 24 Aug 1766 at Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts Mary\/Margaret Bailey\/Bayley<\/b><\/a> of Boston.16<\/a><\/sup>Kentucky Gateway Museum<\/b>, page 49; Deed book A-D), page 107; November 18, 1796: \u2018David Duncan and Margaret his wife\u2019.<\/span>,<\/sup>17<\/a><\/sup>This descendance from Mary Bayley is substantiated by DNA analysis (DET, 110 matches to \u2018Bayley\u2019).<\/span> She was born abt 174018<\/a><\/sup>Kentucky Gateway Museum<\/b>, page 69; obit undated; Mrs. Duncan was 80-90 years at death.<\/span> and died before 1825.19<\/a><\/sup>This Duncan family on FamilySearch Family Tree is hopelessly corrupted (Oct 2023). David Duncan (1) is purportedly a Pennsylvanian (born and died) citing an unfindable reference Duncan, Finch, Gary, and Weed and his father was age 2 at his birth.<\/span>,<\/sup>20<\/a><\/sup>Wm S. Bryan and Robert Rose A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri (St. Louis, Missouri: Bryan, Brand & Co., 1876) pp. 325, 376; hereafter Bryan and Rose<\/b>.
\nBryan and Rose have a paragraph on the David Duncan family. \u2018David Duncan, of Scotland, came to America with his wife, and remained some time in Boston, after which they moved to Mercer county, KY. They had nine children. Mrs. Duncan died, after which he married again and had eleven children more. William, the eldest son by his first wife, married Elizabeth Henderson, of Kentucky, and settled in Callaway county in 1826.\u2019 Six children of William are named (there are actually seven). There is no record of David\u2019s Scottish marriage, but there is a record of his marriage in Boston; he had two boys there by his wife, Mary Bayley. There is no record of Mary\u2019s death and no record of another marriage in Boston or Kentucky. They then moved to Mason County KY (not Mercer); nine more children were born. William was not the eldest (6th of 9) and he died in 1814 in Kentucky\u2014never went to Missouri. When David died in 1827, only the aforementioned eleven children were mentioned in his will. The additional eleven children are spurious.
\n<\/span>,<\/sup>21<\/a><\/sup>Kentucky Gateway Museum<\/b>, page 1; the genealogical summary purports his birthyear to be 1710 (age 114 at death, with question marks) but gives no source. Since the author also supports the mythical conclusions of Bryan and Rose<\/b> in \u2018Pioneer Families\u2026\u2019, the whole birthyear business has no credence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Ennis (Aeneas) Duncan<\/a><\/b> was born 1763 of Ireland and died 9 Mar 183033<\/a><\/sup>Kentucky Gateway Museum<\/b>, page 66; obit 3-9-1830.<\/span> (age 67) at Mason County, Kentucky. He married (1) abt 1789 at Liverpool, Lancashire, England Anne Rush<\/b><\/a>. He emigrated to Kentucky before 1810.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four children.45<\/a><\/sup>David Duncan 1827 Will<\/b>; four children are named in the Will.<\/span> Margaret married (2) 27 May 1817 at Mason County Nathan Franklin<\/b><\/a> (Ennis Duncan, Jr. signed as bondsman). Bryan and Rose<\/b> have a paragraph on the David Duncan family. \u2018David Duncan, of Scotland, came to America with his wife, and remained some time in Boston, after which they moved to Mercer county, KY. They had nine children. Mrs. Duncan died, after which he married again and had eleven children more. William, the eldest son by his first wife, married Elizabeth Henderson, of Kentucky, and settled in Callaway county in 1826.\u2019 Six children of William are named (there are actually seven). There is no record of David\u2019s Scottish marriage, but there is a record of his marriage in Boston; he had two boys there by his wife, Mary Bayley. There is no record of Mary\u2019s death and no record of another marriage in Boston or Kentucky. They then moved to Mason County KY (not Mercer); nine more children were born. William was not the eldest (6th of 9) and he died in 1814 in Kentucky\u2014never went to Missouri. When David died in 1827, only the aforementioned eleven children were mentioned in his will. The additional eleven children are spurious.<\/span><\/p>\n
