From the Duncan\/KT matches two had as the Common Ancestor (CA) William Duncan (1784-1814);<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Online at www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/12108570 \u2018Notton Family Tree\u2019 owner: bobnotton; (accessed 21 Jan 2024); lori albers has a private tree but lineage for both matches is shown on ThruLines.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5; color: #1f497d;\">see <b>Cluster 1<\/b><\/span>\u2014therefore proving the <i>Nancy McMurtry Duncan line<\/i> from <b>DET<\/b> to William Duncan (1784-1814). The Duncan\/KT search produced many tantalizing matches to Duncans in Virginia (Kentucky was a part of Virginia before becoming a state in 1792), but a CA could not be identified on the basis of available records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0None of these matches could be satisfactorily attributed to the \u2018other\u2019 Duncan line, the <i>Mary Duncan (1771-1821) line<\/i>, as they were all in the late 18th century. A search for matches to \u2018Duncan\/Missouri\u2019 produced 16 matches, but relevant Duncans were all in the 19th or 20th century and were therefore useless for this genealogy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/29deadpeople.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/detcluster1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"141\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A match search was also done for \u2018Bayley\/Massachusetts\u2019 the wife of David Wallace Duncan which returned 22 promising matches (most to 18th century, abt 1750, Massachusetts: 9 to Essex Co. (they mostly immigrated from Wiltshire), 2 to Worcester Co., 2 to Norfolk Co., 1 one to Franklin Co. and 3 to Staffordshire-born Bayleys. Since we don\u2019t know our Mary Bayley\u2019s parentage or origin other than (married in Boston at Trinity Church) Massachusetts, a CA for any of these matches could not be determined. This is an additional strong indication (not a proof) that a Bayley\/Bailey is on <b>DET<\/b>\u2019s direct line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/29deadpeople.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/detcluster2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"141\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Similarly, a search for \u2018Henderson\/Kentucky\u2019 produced 24 matches including an 18th century Henderson<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">Online at www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/2147582 \u2018Stark Family Tree\u2019 owner: Norm and Rita Dickey and sources cited therein; (accessed 21 Feb 2025).<\/span> descended from the Hendersons of the Fordell region, Fife County, Scotland and Virginia\/Kentucky (<span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5; color: #1f497d;\">see <b>Cluster 2<\/b><\/span>); CA Wm Henderson (1676-1737)\u2014this a proof that Henderson is on <b>DET<\/b>\u2019s direct line). This lineage descends from James Henderson (Henrysoun), a burgess of Edinburgh who established the castle at Fordell, County Fife, a barony granted by King James IV in 1511.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">Wikipedia, search \u2018Fordell Castle\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 1.5; color: #1f497d;\"><b>Ancestors of Mary Duncan (abt 1771-1821), wife of James Patton: DNA Analysis.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The first record we have regarding Mary Duncan is the birth of her first child James in 1799 in Kentucky (see Patton essay for details). We have presumed Mary was also born in Kentucky, but this may not be so. The Pattons (and James) came to Kentucky from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania\u2014perhaps that was the origin of Mary Duncan as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The \u2018Julie Dundon\u2019 match from the \u2018Duncan\/PA\u2019 search (<span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5; color: #1f497d;\">see <b>Cluster 3<\/b><\/span>) was intriguing for several reasons. Ancestry ThruLines had identified a Duncan CA for this match, but the genealogy was obscenely faulty. Examination of each of these generations for time and place confirmed the lineage, but eliminated each of them as a CA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0An excellent monograph has been published describing Thomas Duncan and his 6 sons.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"8\">Katherine Duncan Smith The Story of Thomas Duncan and his Six Sons (New York: Tobias A. Wright, 1928) online at FamilySearch; hereafter <b>Katherine Duncan Smith<\/b>.<\/span> Samuel Duncan was the son of David Duncan (1730-1792) and a grandson of this Thomas Duncan (1686-1776) and his wife Jane Grier. Thomas was born in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland and immigrated to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania abt 1740. Examination of the progeny of the six sons identified a Mary Duncan b. abt 1771 in Cumberland County, dau of the third son Stephen and his wife Ann Fox. James Patton was also born in Pennsylvania, probably Cumberland County, so that is where they likely met and may have married. Stephen\u2019s father Thomas Duncan (1686-1776) is therefore the CA for the \u2018Julie Dundon\u2019 match.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/29deadpeople.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/detcluster3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"141\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A further proof would be nice. A match search of <b>DET<\/b> DNA for \u2018Fox\/Pennsylvania\u2019 returned 48 matches, 4 of which were to 18th century Cumberland\/Westmoreland individuals indicating that the Fox surname is on <b>DET<\/b>\u2019s direct line; a CA was not identified. There is no overlap in this book with this Duncan genealogy, but there is mention of a William Duncan of Mason County and his 1828 Will (p.26) where he is assumed to be (incorrectly) of the Virginia family.<\/span> <a style=\"color: #802003;\">David Wallace Duncan<\/a><\/b> was born before 1725 at Scotland and of Mason County, Kentucky and died 5 Jul 1826<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"11\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-11\">11<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2894-11\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"11\">David Duncan 1827 will w\/two codicils; online at FamilySearch: Kentucky Probate Records, Mason County, Will records 1826-1829, vol. He stayed with Prince Charlie until 1746 and then made his way to the American Colonies (through Ireland) as there was a reward for his apprehension in Scotland. William, the eldest son by his first wife, married Elizabeth Henderson, of Kentucky, and settled in Callaway county in 1826.\u2019 Six children of William are named (there are actually seven). There is no record of David\u2019s Scottish marriage, but there is a record of his marriage in Boston; he had two boys there by his wife, Mary Bayley. There is no record of Mary\u2019s death and no record of another marriage in Boston or Kentucky. They then moved to Mason County KY (not Mercer); nine more children were born. William was not the eldest (6th of 9) and he died in 1814 in Kentucky\u2014never went to Missouri. When David died in 1827, only the aforementioned eleven children were mentioned in his will. William, the eldest son by his first wife, married Elizabeth Henderson, of Kentucky, and settled in Callaway county in 1826.\u2019 Six children of William are named (there are actually seven). There is no record of David\u2019s Scottish marriage, but there is a record of his marriage in Boston; he had two boys there by his wife, Mary Bayley. There is no record of Mary\u2019s death and no record of another marriage in Boston or Kentucky. They then moved to Mason County KY (not Mercer); nine more children were born. William was not the eldest (6th of 9) and he died in 1814 in Kentucky\u2014never went to Missouri. When David died in 1827, only the aforementioned eleven children were mentioned in his will.
