The Hampshire Origins of the New England Terry Families<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Examination of the genealogical literature identifies SEVEN New England Terry families that emigrated from England in the early 17th century.1<\/a><\/sup>Henry K. \u00a0 \u00a0Below are listed the Terry immigrant founders of each of these seven families [I-VII]<\/b><\/span>:
\n[I]<\/b><\/span> Stephen Terry, of Dorchester, MA; immigrated 1630 on the Mary and John<\/i>
\n[II]<\/b><\/span> John Terry, of Windsor, MA; immigrated 1635 on the Abigail<\/i>\u201432 yrs of age (may be a brother to Stephen)
\n[III]<\/b><\/span> Samuel Terry, of Springfield, MA; immigrated 1650\u201418 yrs. of age.
\n[IV]<\/b><\/span> Thomas Terry, of Freetown, MA and Block Island; immigrated before 1638.
\n[V]<\/b><\/span> Thomas Terry, of Southold, NY; immigrated 1635 (28 yrs of age) on the James<\/i>.
\n[VI]<\/b><\/span> Robert Terry, of Flushing, NY; immigrated 1635 (25 yrs of age) on the James<\/i> (brother to Thomas and Richard?).
\n[VII]<\/b><\/span> Richard Terry, of Southold, NY; immigrated 1635 (17 yrs of age) on the James<\/i> (brother to Thomas and Robert?).<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Considering the time period of these immigrations, they have in common the establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony which was a product of the effort of the Massachusetts Bay Company, a joint-stock company that was granted a royal charter by King Charles I of England in 1629. The company’s purpose was to establish a colony in the New World, specifically in the region that would become known as Massachusetts Bay. The Massachusetts Bay Company was founded by a group of Puritan merchants and religious leaders, many of whom were seeking religious freedom and the ability to establish a community based on their own beliefs. The company’s charter granted them the right to govern and administer the colony as they saw fit, within the framework of English law.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 There are more Terry immigrants to New England in this period than would be expected if one examines the surnames of New Englander immigrants in the 1600\u2019s.4<\/a><\/sup>Martin E. Hollick, New Englanders in the 1600\u2019s<\/i> (Boston, Massachusetts: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2006).<\/span> There is a reason for this: the Reverend John White\/Whyte, M.A.5<\/a><\/sup>Michael Russell, \u2018Rev. John White MA, Patriarch of Dorchester and Founder of Massachusetts\u2019, online at www.opcdorset.org\/fordingtondorset\/Files\/DorchesterRevJohnWhite 1575-1648.html<\/u>; hereafter Russell<\/b><\/span>,6<\/a><\/sup>Wikipedia, \u2018John White (colonist priest)\u2019.<\/span> the \u2018Patriarch of Dorchester, Massachusetts\u2019. Whyte, the rector of Holy Trinity in Dorchester, Dorset (England)<\/i>, was a member of the Massachusetts Bay Company and was instrumental in obtaining the charter for the New England colony. He actively recruited Massachusetts immigrants which included from his extended family.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 John\u2019s sister was Mary White (1571-1637) who married abt 1591 John Terry the elder (1555-1625), the rector of Stockton in Wiltshire. John was born in Long Sutton, Hampshire, the son of Stephen Terry and Alice Cannar. Both rectors, John Whyte and John Terry, were strongly anti-Catholic and published tracts to support their views. They both believed that the solution to becoming a good Christian was to leave England to live in some isolation to practice their faith. John Whyte desired a colony in New England that could serve as a refuge for non-Separatist dissenters (which included the Puritans). These groups did not wish a separation from the Church of England but wished to remove the vestiges of Catholicism to make a simpler and more austere faith. John Whyte never traveled to America himself but recruited actively for those who would go to Massachusetts.7<\/a><\/sup>Ibid.<\/i><\/span> The sailing of the Mary and John<\/i> to Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony was his project; among the passengers was his nephew Stephen Terry [I]<\/b><\/span>, son of his sister Mary and John Terry. One of the next ships to sail for the Massachusetts Bay Colony was the Abigail<\/i> (sailed 1635); her passenger list included John Terry [II]<\/b><\/span> (thought by many to be a brother to Stephen and therefore another nephew of John Whyte).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 John Whyte was baptized at Stanton St. John in Oxfordshire 6 Jan 1574\/5 the son of John White Sr. and Isabel Bawle<\/b><\/span>. A puritan divine, he was educated at New College Oxford (BA 1597) and was appointed rector of Holy Trinity & St. Peters (Dorchester, Dorset) in 1606; Whyte was considered a \u2018moderate puritan\u2019 relative to the Plantations governor John Endicott (he arrived on the Abigail). Also, in 1606 Whyte married Mary Burges<\/b><\/span> who came from a strong puritan background; she bore him four sons. He died 21 Jul 1848 at Dorchester, Dorset after 43 years of service to the Dorchester church.8<\/a><\/sup>Russell<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 It is not surprising that most or all the New England Terry families are part of one expansive British Terry family perhaps all descended from fourteenth century Hampshire tenant farmers. The puritan Rev. John Whyte (the \u2018real founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony\u2019 and brother-in-law of John Terry the elder) recruited his own family heavily for potential emigrants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Identities of the Seven Terry New England Immigrants:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Below is an outline of the genealogy of the seven 16th century Terry immigrants.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 [I]<\/b><\/span> Stephen Terry of Dorchester<\/u>\u2014arrived on the Mary and John<\/i> (b. 1608)9<\/a><\/sup>Justin P. Kellogg, Notes on some of the Descendants of Joseph Kellogg of Hadley<\/i> (Washington, D. C.: L. C. Photoduplication Service, 1971) original publication Geneva, Switzerland, 1898; hereafter Kellogg<\/b>; online at FamilySearch<\/i>.<\/span> according to Savage10<\/a><\/sup>James Savage, Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England<\/i> (Boston, MA: Little, Brown and Co., 1862) pp. 268-270; hereafter Savage<\/b>.<\/span>. He was born and raised in Stockton, Wiltshire and married 13 Mar 1633\/4 at Symondsbury, Dorsetshire (1) Jane Hardey<\/b><\/span>, but lost her in death at Windsor, Connecticut 5 Jun 1647,11<\/a><\/sup>Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins; Immigrants to New England 1620-1633<\/i> (Boston: New England Genealogical Historical Society, 1996-2003) p. 1806 (V.3) and references cited therein; hereafter R. C. Anderson<\/b>.<\/span> vide infra<\/i> (103<\/b>). About 1660 he moved to Hadley, Massachusetts where he was a \u2018first settler\u2019 and became the first constable. He died in Sep. 1668 leaving a widow Elizabeth ____<\/b><\/span>, a son John12<\/a><\/sup>Kellogg<\/b>, pp. 8-9 and R. C. Anderson<\/b>, p. 1895 (V.3); John married at Windsor, 27 Nov 1662.<\/span> (b. 1638) and three daughters Mary (b. 1635), Elizabeth (b. 1641, and Abigail (b. 1646).13<\/a><\/sup>Kellogg<\/b>, p . 9.<\/span> The widow Elizabeth died 11 Aug 1683 at age 90. His son John had a large family (7 children, b 1663-1684).14<\/a><\/sup>Stephen Terry, Notes of Terry Families in the United States, mainly descended from Samuel, of Springfield, Mass., but including also some descended from Stephen, of Windsor, Conn., Thomas of Freetown, Mass. and others<\/i> (Hartford, CT: S. Terry, 1887), p. 248-249; hereafter Stephen Terry Notes….<\/b><\/span> Stephen is likely the grandson of Stephen and Anne Cannar Terry of Long Sutton Hampshire and son of their son John the Elder 85<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 [II]<\/b><\/span> John Terry<\/u>\u2014exists in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut according to Savage15<\/a><\/sup>Savage<\/b> suggests John may be a brother to Stephen.<\/span> (age 32, therefore b. abt 1607), when he immigrated from London in 1635. He is listed in the Abigail<\/i> passenger list as \u2018Jo\u2019 Terry (Joseph16<\/a><\/sup>Joseph Terry, U. S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s, The Abigail Passenger List, 1635: Jo age 32 (b. 1603); online at Ancestry<\/i>.<\/span>,17<\/a><\/sup>Samuel G. Drake The Founders of New England\u2026<\/i> (Boston: FamilySearch International, 1865) p. 48; Abigail<\/i> Passenger List, July 1635: Jo Terry, age 32 (b. 1603); online at FamilySearch<\/i>.<\/span>,18<\/a><\/sup>Charles Edward Banks The Planters of the Commonwealth in Massachusetts 1620-1640<\/i>; Joseph Terry, age 32 (b. 1603) no origin information; online at Ancestry<\/i>.<\/span> or John). There are no records in Goodwin19<\/a><\/sup>Nathaniel Goodwin, Genealogical Notes\u2026First Settlers of Connecticut and Massachusetts<\/i> (Hartford: F. A. Brown, 1856), pp. 221-3.<\/span> or Stiles20<\/a><\/sup>Henry R. Stiles, History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut, Vol. II <\/i>(Hartford: Case, Lockwood, and Brainard Co., 1892), 750-1.<\/span>. All Windsor references to a John Terry relate to Stephen\u2019s son, b. 1638; there are no records at all for \u2018Joseph\u2019. Stephen Terry [I]<\/b><\/span> did have a brother John 101<\/b>, b. abt 1603, who generated no records in Wiltshire after 1635 making him the most obvious choice for [II]<\/b><\/span> (Occam\u2019s razor)21<\/a><\/sup>There are deaths reported of a John Terry (30 Apr 1691) and Mary (Margaret?) Terry (25 Feb 1700) of Granby (adjacent and NW of Windsor), Hartford, Connecticut; Barbour Collection: Connecticut Vital Records Prior to 1850, online at FamilySearch<\/i>.<\/span>.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 Alternatively, it is possible that he is the John Terry (son of John Terry 92<\/b> and Elizabeth Gale Pierpoynt Terry b. 1598) who may have sailed on the Abigail<\/i> in 1635.22<\/a><\/sup>English Founders<\/b>, p. 12, 34-35.<\/span> Although, Paul Terry Thompson in his book All About Terrys<\/i> purports that this John Terry 92<\/b> (m. Mary) with his brothers Stephen and Thomas emigrated to York County, Virginia.23<\/a><\/sup>Paul Terry Thompson All About Terrys: A Genealogy of the surname Terry 1630-1860<\/i> (Turlock California: P. T. Thompson, 1990)\u2014this theory is disproved, vide infra<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 [III]<\/b><\/span> Samuel Terry of Springfield<\/u>,24<\/a><\/sup>John M. Doubleday, Our Ancestors: Samuel Terry, et al.<\/i> (Caldwell, KS: J. M. Doubleday, 1924), p. 2,3.24.<\/span> was a farmer and weaver, b. 163225<\/a><\/sup>Savage<\/b>, p. 269.<\/span> and died 2 Jan 1731 at Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut, buried in the Springfield Cemetery, Hampden, Massachusetts.26<\/a><\/sup>Findagrave Index #112063577, Samuel L. Terry Sr., Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts; lists birth in 1632, Barnet, Greater London, England, spouse Ann Terry, nice bio.<\/span> The first record of him is his apprenticeship to Benjamin Cooly, weaver in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1650.27<\/a><\/sup>Stephen Terry Notes…<\/b>, pp. 1-14; although this is an excellent unsourced American genealogy, the author is most thorough on the descendants of Samuel Terry [III]; he also has chapters on the Putnam County, NY Terrys and the Williamsburg Terrys which he intimates are probable descendants of Samuel Terry.<\/span> He was indentured in England by Mr. Pynchon, and was said to be \u2018of Barnet\u2019, a borough of North London that includes Totteridge\u2014this would make him a descendant (grandson) of John Terry the Younger 92, a goldsmith of that place.28<\/a><\/sup>Ibid<\/i>.<\/span>,29<\/a><\/sup>Henry Terry of English Founders<\/b> opines (p. 36) he was a son of John Terry\u2019s son William (123).<\/span> He married (1) Anne Lobdell<\/b><\/span> (1634-1684),30<\/a><\/sup>Findagrave Index #144488146, buried next to her husband Samuel at Springfieldl Cemetery.<\/span> nine children; their oldest son was born 1661 and was also named (Capt.) Samuel. He married (2) 19 Nov 1690 Sarah Blisse Scott<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 [IV]<\/b><\/span> Lieutenant Thomas Terry of Freetown<\/u>31<\/a><\/sup>Stephen Terry Notes…<\/b>, p. 264-265.<\/span> (Bristol County) Massachusetts. Of England, he first appears in Braintree, MA and in quarter court in Boston Dec 4, 1638.32<\/a><\/sup>It is not clear whether this Thomas Terry was the one who went to Block Island and eventually to Freeport or whether he was the Thomas Terry who arrived on the James and was on his way to Southold, Long Island.<\/span> He bought land on Block Island 1660 and was made a freeman of Rhode Island in 1664 and was a deputy in the General Court of Block Island in 1665. He participated in obtaining a township charter for Block Island in 1672 and was active there during Phillip\u2019s War. He then removed to Freetown33<\/a><\/sup>Gary B. Roberts, Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol. II<\/i> (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1989), p. 324.<\/span> where he was one of the first board of selectmen of Freetown, Massachusetts, elected Jun 2, 1685, and was reelected 1686-1690. In 1689 he was the largest taxpayer in Freetown; died in Freetown in 1702. He was married to Ann ____<\/b><\/span> (she died in Freetown in 1704); three sons: (1) Thomas (born abt 1675) married 4 Jan 1699\/1700 Abigail Dean<\/b><\/span> (he was elected assessor in 1704, he became a selectman in 1705, and a lieutenant in the Freetown militia in 1715) and died in 1757; (2) John, md 3 Apr 1705 Remember Harrow<\/b><\/span>, dau of John; and (3) Benjamin md. Margaret ____<\/b><\/span>. Considering all this, he was probably born abt 1620.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 Some authors believe Thomas, son of Samuel [III]<\/b><\/span><\/b><\/span> and Thomas [VII]<\/b><\/span><\/b><\/span> are the same individual.34<\/a><\/sup>William P. Sheffield, Historical Sketch of Block Island<\/i> (Newport, RI: J. P. Sanborn & Co., 1876), p. 58.<\/span> This is unlikely considering the great disparity in their birthyears; Thomas of Freetown was made a Freeman of Rhode Island the year Thomas, son of Samuel [III]<\/b><\/span> was born. Similarly, the Thomas of Southold (b. 1607) would seem to be too old to be the Thomas of Freehold who was having children in the 1670\u2019s.35<\/a><\/sup>Gary B. Roberts, Genealogies of Rhode Island Families, Vol. II<\/i> (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1989), p. 324; Roberts uses the word \u2018perhaps\u2019, but to my mind clearly not.<\/span> After examining the evidence it is quite clear that these three Thomas Terrys and Thomas Terry of Bucks are four separate persons:<\/span>
\n(1) Thomas of Freetown (d. 1702) was married to Ann<\/b><\/span>, Thomas of Southold (d. 1672) was married to Marie<\/b><\/span>, Thomas of Springfield married Mary in 1687 and Thomas of Bucks (d. 1703) was married to (Sarah)<\/b><\/span>.
\n(2) Thomas of Freetown, Thomas of Springfield, and Thomas of Southold were all generating records that would indicate they spent most of their time in their respective towns.
\n(3) Their available wills acknowledge only the children born in that particular jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 [V, VI, VII]<\/b><\/span> Thomas, Robert, and Richard Terry (brothers?) came from London36<\/a><\/sup>\u2018Founders of New England\u2019 The Register<\/i>, Vol 14, p. 321 (1860).<\/span> in 1635 on the James<\/i> and two of them (Thomas and Richard) settled in Southold, NY (Long Island).37<\/a><\/sup>Savage<\/b>.<\/span> The third, Robert Terry, went to Flushing, NY; he had at least two children one of whom has been proven38<\/a><\/sup>Richard L. Tolman \u2018Robert Terry of Flushing, New York\u2019; online at www.29deadpeople.com<\/u>; this essay provides DNA evidence that Thomas Terry of Bucks\u2019 mother was Sarah Farrington, wife of Robert Terry.<\/span>,39<\/a><\/sup>The Y-DNA evidence on www.worldfamilies.net\/surnames\/terry<\/u> indicates the three brother\u2019s Y-DNA is I-haplotype (Parshall Terry ancestors).<\/span> (by DNA) to be \u2018Thomas Terry of Bucks\u2019.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 All that is known of the \u2018brothers\u2019 is their age at emigration40<\/a><\/sup>The James<\/i> Passenger List, 1635: Thomas age 28 (b. 1607), Robert age 25 (b. 1610), and Richard age 17 (b. 1618); online at www.olivetreegenealogy.com\/ships\/james1635.shtml<\/u>.<\/span> and that they were unmarried in 1635 (spouses would be listed in the passenger list). They are only presumed to be brothers and are claimed by contemporary Terry researchers to have originated from Hampshire (Long Sutton); however, the record states only that they sailed from London.41<\/a><\/sup>Stuart T. Terry, Genealogy of the Terry Family<\/i>, unpublished ms from the New York Public Library; filmed by FamilySearch<\/i> in 1939, 9061758 (image 55\/277); states only that the brothers came from England.<\/span> Exhaustive search of the English parish registers for ter*\/tyr* has failed to identify a family with three sons with appropriate birthyears. We therefore are forced to presume the three young men are not of the same family. There are many \u2018Thomases\u2019 but comparatively few \u2018Roberts\u2019 and \u2018Richards\u2019. Aguayo42<\/a><\/sup>Marla Aguayo; \u2018Marla\u2019s \u2018Terry\u2019 Family Research: Information about Richard Terry\u2019, online at www.genealogy.com\/ftm\/a\/g\/u\/Marla_Aguayo-AZ\/WEBSITE-0001.html<\/u> (accessed 19 May 2023); hereafter Aguayo<\/b>.<\/span> and Chambers43<\/a><\/sup>George J. Chambers \u2018Descendants of Stephen and Alice (CONNOR) Terry of England\u2019, online at http:\/\/freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com\/~nyterry\/otherterrys\/step_alice.html; a good genealogy strong in the American area, has big problems in the British section, cites Kellogg but does not use him; hereafter Chambers<\/b>.<\/span> claim the brothers are sons of James (88<\/b>) and Anne (Peacocke) Terry of Long Sutton; this is untenable as their sons Thomas and Robert were having children in Hampshire at the time of the voyage of the James vide infra<\/i>.44<\/a><\/sup>It is remotely possible that James and Anne\u2019s son Richard (110<\/b>, b. 1609) was one of the immigrants (b. 1618 according to the Passenger List).<\/span> Other Long Sutton Hampshire Terry families (Thomas 91<\/b> and Joan) have been considered as sources of the three brothers and ruled out (cf<\/i> Bogner); there are no matches for the three emigrants in the Hampshire Baptism Index. Bogner45<\/a><\/sup>Stephen Bogner \u2018Re: Found Info: the Terry Brothers in 1635\u2019; online at www.genealogy.com\/forum\/surnames\/topics\/terry\/7269<\/u> and www.genealogy.com\/forum\/surnames\/topics\/terry\/7276<\/u>; he argues that the three brothers are not children of James and Anne (no citations) and confirms Thomas (91<\/b>) and Joan Terry family makeup from the book Hydegate & its People<\/i>.; hereafter Bogner1-2<\/b>.<\/span>,46<\/a><\/sup>Steven Bogner \u2018Re: Richard Terry\u2019; he believes the brothers came from Throwley, Kent; online at www.genealogy.com\/forum\/surnames\/topics\/terry\/7377<\/u>; hereafter Bogner3<\/b>.<\/span> maintains that there is no proof that the three brothers come from Hampshire at all and favors a Terry family in Throwley, Kent.<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 The other genealogical possibilities of the three Terry emigrants will now be separately considered including surveys of the English parish registers<\/b>.\u00a0 According to ChatGPT47<\/a><\/sup>ChatGPT: www.chatgpt.com.<\/u><\/span> historians estimate that 70-85% of the English population were represented in the 17th<\/sup> century Anglican parish registers.\u00a0 For the Terry family the percentage may be somewhat higher as they were known to be not Catholic and one of the major motivations for emigration was freedom to practice their (Anglican) religion.\u00a0 Thomas [V]<\/b><\/span> and Richard [VII]<\/b><\/span> routinely had the Anglican baptisms of their children recorded; Robert [VI]<\/b><\/span> did not.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nParish Register Survey:<\/b> There is a son Thomas Terry b. 160748<\/a><\/sup>England Deaths and Burials 1538-1991; online at FamilySearch<\/i> https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:J8S6-Y2K.<\/span> at Throwley,Kent (no parent listed)\u2014also two Thomas Terry deaths in Kent before 1625, but there is no Robert or Richard Terry in the Throwley, Kent records. For a Thomas Terry b. 1607 there are however other possibilities: (1) Thomas Terre (father William) of St. Clement, Eastcheap, City of London, baptized 26 Feb 160849<\/a><\/sup>London Metropolitan Archives, London, England; London Church of England Parish Registers, Ref. \u00a0 \u00a0 Could it be significant that two of the three Terry emigrants remained together in Southold, Long Island? \u2014Perhaps Thomas and Richard were more closely related or knew each other before sailing on the James. Among the possibilities considered above, there is a Thomas and a Richard both baptized in London\u2014one at St. Leonard, Shoreditch [Richard (2)] and the other at St. Clement, Eastcheap [Thomas (1)]. The churches are actually close together in central London\u2014one east of the Tower of London and the other north of same.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hampshire Origins of the Terry Family:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 The Stockton, Wilshire Rector John Terry was born in Long Sutton, Hampshire and most of the Terrys in this essay have their origins in Hampshire in or near Long Sutton. In Hampshire they were tenant farmers on the Crondall Hundred. The term \u2018Hundred\u2019 dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period and was a geographic division of land typically containing about one hundred households encompassing many settlements and parishes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 During the Elizabethan era the monarch owned all the land (divided into Hundreds\u2014rents were administered by the Church). Nobility and wealthy landowners held their land through freehold tenure<\/i>, which meant they owned their land outright. Tenant farmers held their land through copyhold tenure<\/i>. Copyhold tenants had rights to work and live on the land, but they had certain obligations to the landowner and had limited control over the property. In the 16th century feudal system primogeniture was the common practice; the eldest son inherited the majority of the land, while younger sons sometimes received smaller land portions or had the option of the Church or the army. Daughters usually did not inherit land but could receive dowries or be married off to landowning families. Frequently mentioned in land documents of the time is a heriot<\/i>\u2014a tribute or feudal duty paid to the landlord after the death of a tenant consisting of a horse or other live animal or other belongings of the decedent. In order to transfer a copyhold tenancy, the tenant surrendered the tenancy to his will which then could name the inheritor of the tenancy.63<\/a><\/sup>Coldicott<\/b>, p. 11.<\/span> A yeoman is a farmer, and a husbandman is a lower rank of farmer. The Crondall Hundred<\/i> of extreme northeast Hampshire, was land bequeathed by Alfred the Great to his son Eltham in 885, later tenanted by Elizabeth the First and divided into manors; the steward landowner administered the tenancies on behalf of the \u2018monks of St. Swithen\u2019 and later the Winchester Cathedral.64<\/a><\/sup>Wikipedia online, search: Crondall.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sources for the Ancient Terrys<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hampshire Parish registers begin abt 1537; relevant 16th century parishes65<\/a><\/sup>Hampshire Genealogical Society Marriage Index (1538-1659, 1 CD HCD013), data abstracted from Parish Registers, and similarly from the same source the Baptism Index (1537-1659, 1 CD HCD015) 1and the Burial Index (1400-1841, 1 CD HCD011); hereafter Hamp<\/b>shire Marriage Index<\/b>, Hampshire Baptism Index<\/b> and the Hampshire Burial Index<\/b>, respectively.<\/span> in the area are: the Long Sutton Parish, the South Warnborough Parish (2 mi W of Long Sutton), and the Crondall Parish (4 mi NE of Long Sutton). Also generating records in the 16th century, but further removed from Long Sutton are Odiham Parish (NW) and Upton Grey Parish (W). South Warnborough, Odiham, and Upton had no Terry burials before 1650. Robert Terry b. 1490 and his family (and son Richard) were in Long Sutton and John Terry (and son John) and his family were in Crokeham (Crookham)\/Crondall parish.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many difficult-to-read wills which provide some genealogical detail. The Long Sutton wills are excellently summarized in a book by Diane Coldicott68<\/a><\/sup>Diane K. Coldicott A Long Sutton miscellany: including a study of the wills (1502-1709) and probate inventories (1558-1709) from the parish of Long Sutton and Well, Hampshire<\/i> (London: D. K. Justin Kellogg wrote a genealogical history (published Geneva, Switzerland in 1898) and it included a chapter70<\/a><\/sup>Kellogg<\/b> p. 32-37.<\/span> on the \u2018Terry Family of the Manor of Crondal\u2019. There is a description of Kellogg\u2019s visit to the Public Record Office in Chancery Lane, London where he notes from the Court Rolls a line of Terrys going back to 1426. According to Kellogg the sequence of Terry tenants of land (Long Sutton) is as follows: October 1426 John Terry, 16 October 1431 John Terry, 20 May 1432 John Terry, 7 May 1487 Thomas Terry, 3 April 1494 Thomas Terry, 22 October 1510 Robert Terry\/Thomas Terry\/John Terry, 29 April 1511 John Terry, 10 October 1516 Robert Terry\/Thomas Terry\/John Terry, 21 April 1517 Richard Terry, 4 October 1529 Thomas Terry\/Richard Terry. Unfortunately, it is not that simple to trace the Terry lineage as there are many Terry tenants in the Crondall Hundred. Beside the Crondal Customary, a transcription of an accompanying document is useful\u2014called the Baigent Crondal Records: Documents and Records Relating to the Hundred and Manor of Crondal in Hampshire (part 6), pp. 258-383.71<\/a><\/sup>Online at www.yateleylocalhistory.pbworks.com\/f\/DocumentsAndRecordspart6.html; hereafter Yateleylocalhistory<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 In the Crondal Customary dated 10 October 1567 the Long Sutton tenancy was transferred from Richard Terry to his son (brother?)72<\/a><\/sup>Kellogg<\/b> (p. 33) has Stephen a brother of Richard although there are no dates in the Robert Terry will to support this; it is inconsistent with baptism records in the Hampshire Baptism Index<\/b>. He has also confused Richard, son of Robert with Richard, son of Stephen who became the rector of Saham-Toney, Walton, Norfolk.<\/span> Stephen as well as the lands of a William Terry. Richard is the oldest of the four children of Robert Terry.73<\/a><\/sup>Will of Robert Terry of Long Sutton, dated 19 Feb 1576\/7 and proved 18 Apr 1577, mentions four children; reviewed by Coldicott<\/b>.<\/span> Witness the confusion abt the Robert and Richard Terrys in the genealogical literature. It appears that the Terrys (5, Richard, b. abt 1460) first moved to Long Sutton from Crokeham (Crondall Hundred) before 1500. Examination of the available wills of the period it seems that the Terrys lived first in the 15th century in Farnham, Surrey (many of the later Terry burials were returned to the Farnham cemetery). Later the Terrys moved to Bramley, Hampshire briefly before settling in Crookham, Crondall Hundred and then a branch of the family went to nearby Long Sutton, Hampshire in the mid-16th century. The latter part of this essay is an attempted reconstruction of the Terry genealogy in Hampshire using primarily the 20,000 Old English Hampshire wills of the time period.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 There are a lot of Terrys in the Crondall hundred and many different spellings in the records from Terrye to Tyr. Notable are a Richard Tyrrie, a John Terie and a Clement74<\/a><\/sup>A descendant of Richard Terry, Thomas Terry of Bucks b. 1653, named a son Clement; see Richard L. Tolman \u2018Five Generations of the Terry Family of Bucks County Pennsylvania\u2019, online at www.29deadpeople.com<\/u>.<\/span> Tyrry, who lived in Crondall parish; they are contemporaries (sibs or cousins?) of the children of Richard Terry (13). In the 16th century the Ancient Terrys seem to be bifurcated into groups: the Long Sutton bunch and the Crondall\/Crokeham\/Crookham group. The people of this time had the annoying tendency to give the same name to more than one child and to use the same few names over and over again to add to the genealogist\u2019s confusion.<\/span><\/p>\n
