They had one son Obadiah Sands, Jr. (1801-1840); the wife probably died in childbirth. The birth occurred in 1801 at Deposit (Tompkins Township), Delaware County, New York (on the banks of the Delaware River near the western edge of the county). The settlement of Deposit around 1800 was, in the words of a local historian, \u2018nothing but a mud hole\u2019. No records. This was an intractable problem for which a solution seemed hopelessly beyond reach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Obadiah Sands (\u2018the Judge\u2019) was born 1774 at Sands Point, Long Island, the ancestral home of the Sands family. He came to Deposit, Delaware County (then called Cookoze, Ulster County) in 1795<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"5\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-5\">5<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-5\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"5\">Halsey, Francis W. <i>The Pioneers of Unadilla Village 1784-1840<\/i> (Unadilla, NY: privately printed, 1902) pp. 124-126; online at Ancestry.<\/span> with a cook (a Negro boy) to engage in the booming lumber business, met and married a wife abt 1800\u2014she probably died with the birth of their son Obadiah Jr. in 1801.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The first DNA strategy for discovering the name of the first wife was to explore the <b>MDT at-DNA<\/b> matches for individuals who may have lived in Delaware County around 1800 (<b>MDT<\/b> = Maralyn D. Tolman, a ggg-gdau of Obadiah Sands Jr.). One can search matches by place (Delaware County, NY)\u2014so far so good. But when you pull up the full family tree of the match, the Ancestry search algorithm does not allow for a search by place. To search these trees by hand is laborious and mind-numbing and one soon tires of it. Another strategy was needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/29deadpeople.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/delaware.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"799\" height=\"220\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.5;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Figure 1. 1895 Map of Delaware County, New York (orange); Deposit is on the western edge just above where the Pennsylvania line turns south (dcnyhistory.org).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We have long been aware of the preoccupation of the family of Obadiah Sands Jr. with William Butler Ogden,<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\">Wheeler, William Ogden <i>The Ogden Family in America, Elizabethtown Branch, and their English Ancestry<\/i> (Philadelphia, PA: J. B. Lippincott, 1907); lots of detail about their settlement in Delaware County; online at Ancestry; hereafter <b>The Ogden Family<\/b>.<\/span> the first mayor of the city of Chicago, 1837-1838 (see <b>Anson-Sands III<\/b>). He was the one who instigated the digging of the canal connecting the Chicago River with Lake Michigan, which changed the city of Chicago forever for the better. No less than five of the children and grandchildren of Obadiah Jr. have named their children after the illustrious mayor. \u2018The Mayor\u2018 was born in Delaware County in 1805, the son of Abraham and Abigail (Weed) Ogden. In his words \u2018I was born close to a saw mill, was cradled in a sugar trough, christened in a mill pond, early left an orphan, graduated at a log schoolhouse, and at 14 found I could do anything I turned my hand to, and that nothing was impossible.\u2019<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\">Murray, John David <i>Delaware County, New York, history of the century, 1797-1897<\/i> (Delhi, New York: William Clark, 1898) p. 63.<\/span>,<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"8\">Online at <u>www.chipublib.org\/mayor-william-b-ogden-biography<\/u>. <\/span> It is clear that the two families (Sands and Ogden) were acquainted with one another, perhaps related? Obadiah Jr. would also move later in life to Boone County, Illinois\u2014adjacent to and southwest of Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A second DNA strategy was to explore a possible connection between the families. The Mayor\u2019s father\u2019s family, the Ogdens, were from Morristown, Morris, New Jersey, but his mother\u2019s family, the Weeds, lived in Walton, Delaware County (yes!) New York and before that came from Fairfield County, Connecticut.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-000000000000019c0000000000000000_2050-9\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"9\">Online at <i>FamilySearch Family Tree<\/i>. <\/span> A search of <b>MDT at-DNA<\/b> matches turned up no less than 38 Weed matches, not counting CA\u2019s (common ancestors) and private trees. Out of curiosity a search of MDT\u2019s <b>at-DNA<\/b> for \u2018Teed\u2019 (Obadiah Sr.\u2019s 2nd wife; no relation by blood or DNA) produced no genuine hits as expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Tahoma'; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 1.8;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Laurie Jane Hillyard (<b>LJH<\/b>) is a 1C of <b>MDT<\/b> and Noreen Olvis-Coffey (<b>NO<\/b>) is a 3C1R of <b>MDT<\/b>; <b>NO<\/b> is descended from Obadiah Jr. through his dau Odyssa Adeline Sands (1835-1921).
