\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We will deal first with the wife and parents of Samuel Graham and then examine the supporting maiden name DNA evidence. Then we will look at progenitors of Samuel Graham and finally the distant Graham relatives, the New Hampshire Grahams, and discuss the confirmatory absence of other relevant surnames.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Wife of Samuel Graham, b. 1771<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We see from the Graham Genealogical Summary in PART 1<\/b><\/span> that Nancy Graham\u2019s father was Samuel Graham. The wife of Samuel Graham is usually left blank in most trees except at FamilySearch Tree where his wife is \u2018Hanna Coltrin\u2019 with a bad reference (linkrot) at familytreemaker.genealogy.com<\/u> in 2014 or \u2018Sarah (Sally) Coltrain\u2019 at Millenium Search1<\/a><\/sup>Millenium File \u2018Samuel Graham\u2019 b. 20 Jun 1771, spouse: Sarah Sally Coltrain, from family records; online at Ancestry (accessed 8 Feb 2020).<\/span> (no actual source). The wife cannot be Sarah Coltrin 14<\/b> as historical records show she already had a spouse vide infra<\/i>. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0As if they were trying to confuse us, the Coltranes intermarried frequently with Grahams\u2013but not the Connecticut Grahams, but the Hugh Graham family of New Hampshire; both families come from Scotland. The New Hampshire Grahams are not closely related to the Connecticut Grahams. If there is a Common Ancestor for the two Graham families, he is in Scotland, has low cM matches and is beyond the scope of this DNA study and the available data from Ancestry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The immigrant Coltrin\/Coltrane family lived in upstate New York locations where they were in close proximity with the New Hampshire Graham family (see 1790 census citation vide infra<\/i>). Later the Coltranes moved to Tolland County, just northeast of Hartford, Connecticut where they were close to Wethersfield, Hartford and the Connecticut Grahams. Hannah Coltrin, born 1766 at Wethersfield is the likely wife of Samuel Graham (no source).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is noteworthy that when the Mormons made the 1847 trek to the Salt Lake Valley they did so in the same fashion as Moses when he led the Hebrews out of Egypt to the Promised Land\u2014organized into \u2018hundreds\u2019 and \u2018tens\u2019. Zebedee Coltrin was a captain of the second \u2018ten\u2019;14<\/a><\/sup>Whitney, Orson F. History of Utah<\/i>, Vol 1. (Salt Lake City, UT: George Q. Cannon & Sons: 1892) p. 353 and Andrew Jenson The Pioneers of 1847<\/i>, Vol 7 (Salt Lake City, UT: Andrew Jenson, 1888), p. 90.<\/span> this \u2018ten\u2019 included Chauncey Loveland (Zebedee was his wife\u2019s cousin). Soon after their arrival, Zebedee, Chauncey and Stephen H. \u00a0\u00a0John Coltrane\u2019s wife was Rebecca Maxham\/Muxom of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Maxham\/Maxam\/Moxom family originated in Rhode Island; it has not been possible to connect in the record the Massachusetts Maxhams to the Rhode Island family. There are many ETS<\/b> matches to this family, but nearly all to the Rhode Island people. One match, however, shown in Cluster 6, \u2018Karin-Aisha Pandelaki\u201916<\/a><\/sup>Online at www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/person\/tree\/48826098<\/u> \u2018Karen Munson Family Tree\u2019 owner: Karin-Aisha Pandelaki; and references therein (accessed 13 Mar 2020).<\/span>, was discovered which is descended from the Massachusetts family; the CA is Edmund Maxim, Rebecca\u2019s father. This is additional support for the fact that ETS<\/b> possesses Coltrin DNA and not New Hampshire Graham DNA\u2014she has matches to the ancient (before 1750) Maxson\/Maxon line, i. e. possible ancestors of Rebecca Maxham, wife of John Coltrane. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 John\u2019s origins (1738-1807) are a bit more shaky.\u00a0 Some say (FamilySearch Family Tree) he was the son of Wm James Coltrane and Sarah Christie born \u2018at sea\u2019, but this has now been disproven by Y-DNA analysis<\/strong>.17<\/a><\/sup>Coltrin, Dorothy \u2018Searching for the Coltrains\u2019 W.I.S.E. Words<\/em>, October, November, December 2012, p. 60-61\u2019 and \u2018Based on Biology, I Am No Longer a Coltrin\u2019 W.I.S.E. Words<\/em> is the Wales-Ireland-Scotland-England Family History Society Newsletter.\u00a0 The 2012 article contains important and useful references to the early Coltraines.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 \u2018At sea\u2019 is a euphemism for born out of wedlock.\u00a0 John Coltraine actually was the illegitimate son of Joseph or John Lane of Edgecombe County, North Carolina and an unnamed female Coltrain.\u00a0 In an important FTDNA study, STR analysis of Y-DNA from several Coltrin sources were shown to not possess the Coltrin haplotype, but the Lane\/Layne\/Laine haplotype (see the Coltrin WISE Newsletter<\/em> for more detail). <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It has been established from Part 1 that Samuel\u2019s parents were John and Hannah (Hunn) Graham.29<\/a><\/sup>Hinman, Royal R. \u2018Records of Wethersfield, Conn.\u2019 New England Historical and Genealogical Register<\/i> Vol. 18 (1864) p. 57; Graham, John and Hannah Hun, were m. Apr 21, 1768. Is(sue)\u2014Samuel, b. June 20, \u201971; Clara, June 10, 1773.<\/span> But which John Graham? Not<\/u> John Augustus Graham MD<\/b>, the one most often cited (see FamilySearch Family Tree<\/i>)! John Augustus Graham was born 6 Mar 1749 in Middlesex<\/i><\/u> County, Connecticut, practiced medicine in Manhattan and died and was buried 18 May 1796 in Greenwich, Fairfield<\/i><\/u>, Connecticut.30<\/a><\/sup>Birth: Son of John Graham and Mary Shelton, Records of Births, Marriages, and Deaths 1662-1934; Findagrave #14613974 good bio; Death: U. S. Newspaper Extractions from the Northeast, 1704-1930, New York Weekly Museum, 651\/908; online at FamilySearch and Ancestry (accessed 3 Apr 2020).<\/span> This John was married to Jerusha Peck Ferris and he had two daus by her (b. 1792 and 1794; they are buried next to their dad).
