The Merkins Family: Connecting the Capehart and Terry Lineages<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

   The 18th century Capehart<\/b> family ancestry has been traced1<\/a><\/sup>Kephart, Calvin; Proclamation: \u2018Medieval Counts of Raeut (Bavaria) of the Danish Ski\u00f6ldung Royal Dynasty\u2019<\/i> (1950); FHL Fiche 6018394. See also Kephart, Calvin I. Kephart correspondence stored at the Pennsylvania Historical Society (he was president of the National Genealogical Society 1928-30 and 1938-1940), we have the 1945 letters2<\/a><\/sup>Capehart documents of Calvin I. Kephart: Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Collection GSP 001, 13 boxes, 5 linear feet of paper. Capehart-relevant-material included personal notes, sometimes with markedly different and conflicting versions of the same matter, letters and other correspondence, interviews of living Capeharts (mostly in the Kensington district) made by Mr. Kephart\u2019s hired researcher, Mrs. Gertrude Fryburg of Philadelphia hereafter C.I.K. Capehart docs<\/b>.<\/span> of Mrs. David H. Wood (Adah Mackelprang Wood, 1887-1976) describing research on the Merkins line. In those letters Mrs. Wood gleaned information from \u2018grandfather\u2019s record\u2019 (Thomas Sirls Terry Jr.; hereafter TSTjr<\/b>) and from an aunt Mrs. Mary J. Bunker (Mary Elsie Terry Bunker, 1881-1944); a dau of TSTjr<\/b> who also had genealogical interests and was the Terry family genealogist during her lifetime. Mary was custodian of her father\u2019s papers and also provided the connection to Col. Kephart. In these letters Mrs. Wood recounts that TSTjr<\/b> stated \u2018John or James Merkins and his brother Peter<\/u><\/i> ran away from home in England\u2026and came to America.\u20193<\/a><\/sup>Wood Correspondence<\/b>; letter of 26 Jun 1945 to Col. C. I. Kephart.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The German Mierkens: Pennsylvania<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

   There are three Peter Mierckin\/Murckens (and other spelling variants) in Philadelphia during the mid-17th to early-18th century from Germany or England. In order to sort them out, the German family will have to be fleshed out first as they have many more records extant.<\/span><\/p>\n

   There are two immigration records4<\/a><\/sup>Peter Mierken immigration: U. S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists, source pub.3211.7; from Hocker, Edward W. Genealogical Data Relating to the German Settlers of Pennsylvania and Adjacent Territory<\/i> (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1981); online at Ancestry.com (accessed 27 Mar 2019).<\/span> for Peter Mierkens (father and son?) who arrived 1771 and 1774 in Philadelphia (German origin). They became sugar refiners in Southwark, South Philadelphia.5<\/a><\/sup>Peter \u2018Miercens \u2018, sugar refiner in 1782,1783,1789: Pennsylvania Tax and Exoneration Lists, 1768-1801; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 27 Mar 2019).<\/span>,6<\/a><\/sup>Peter Miercens, 1790 U. (the son) died 17 Jul 1822 at Philadelphia at age 57 (b. 1766).7<\/a><\/sup>Peter Mierken death: U. S.    Peter Mierken\u2019s Jr. wife\u2019s name was Martha<\/b><\/span> (= Mary?)9<\/a><\/sup>Pennsylvania, Compiled Marriage Records 1700-1821, there are records for 3 Miercken marriages: 29 Nov 1790 Catherine to Richard Potter, 16 Apr 1795 Peter to Maria Snowden, and 26 Mar 1795 Sarah to John Whitesides; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 27 Mar 2019).<\/span> from the christening record of their daus Cathrine Mierkin, born 10 May 1796 and Hannah Maria Mierkin; both christened10<\/a><\/sup>Cathrine and Hannah Maria Mierkin christenings: Pennsylvania Births and Christenings 1709-1950; https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:V2NN-X45<\/u> and https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:V2NN-FPJ<\/u>; online at FamilySearch (accessed 27 Mar 2019).<\/span> 6 May 1798 at Christ Church and Saint Peters in Southwark, Philadelphia. A Peter \u2018Murckin\u2019 had a dau Caroline born 1816, died 26 Sep 1820 at 4 yrs. on board the steamboat at New Castle of \u2018dropsy of the brain\u2019; buried at St. Pauls Church Burial Ground.11<\/a><\/sup>Caroline \u2018Murckin\u2019 death: Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Death Certificates; https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:JDBD-VYC<\/u>; online at FamilySearch (accessed 27 Mar 2019). The death record indicates she was buried at \u2018Saint Paul\u2019s Church Burial Ground\u2019, but there is no such cemetery in Philadelphia County (Allan M Heller, Philadelphia Area Cemeteries (Atglen, PA: Schiffer Publishing Co., 2005) or at Findagrave. There is also no record of her burial at Saint Peter\u2019s, where the rest of the family is buried.<\/span> The Saint Peter\u2019s Churchyard in Southwark, South Philadelphia contains the graves of many of the family including Peter (d. 1822).12<\/a><\/sup>Findagrave, Saint Peter\u2019s Episcopal Churchyard Memorials: Anna d. 1844 #89181567, Anna E. d. 1874 #89174243, Henry F. d. 1850 #89174898, Maria Snowden d. 1840 #89174482, Peter d. 1822 #89174598, Sara d. 1854 #89813294.<\/span> There is a Catherine Merkin<\/b><\/span> in the 1820 U. S. census13<\/a><\/sup>Catherine Merkin: 1820 U. S. Census of Southwark, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Roll M33_110, Image 370, Page 105, enumerated 7 Aug 1820, \u2018Catherine Merken\u2019, household of six: 2 males (one 10-15, one 26-44) and 4 females (one over 45, three 16-25); online at Ancestry (accessed 2 May 2019).<\/span> of Southwark, Philadelphia, born before 1775\u2014this would be the widow (b. 1744) of Peter Mierken senior with the remnants of their family including some grandchildren. There is also a Peter \u2018Merkin\u2019 (Jr.) in the 1820 census of Southwark, Philadelphia (enumeration Aug 1820) with a large family (household of 11);14<\/a><\/sup>Peter Merkin: 1820 U. S. His household includes a 4 yr old dau, therefore this must be the German family Miercken. S. Census of Philadelphia Ward 8 District 23, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, National Archives Roll M593_1393, Page 151A, FHL Film 552892, Katharina is living with her two Miercken sisters, Estelle and Ann, 58 and 55 yrs, running a private school, all b. Mierken<\/b><\/span>,18<\/a><\/sup>Josephine P. Mierken death: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Death Certificates 1803-1915; attributed to the 1774 immigrant Peter Mierken because of the Roman Catholic burial, https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:J6XQ-43V<\/u>; online at FamilySearch (accessed 4 May 2019).<\/span> b. 1795 and died 9 Apr 1849 at Philadelphia, buried at St. John\u2019s R. C., marital status unknown. These children had likely married and left home by 1820. A son John W. Mierkin<\/b><\/span> was born 1795 of Philadelphia and died 18 Apr 1874; buried19<\/a><\/sup>John W. Mierkien gravestone, 1874, Public Member Photos at Ancestry.com (accessed 29 Mar 2019).<\/span> at Monument Cemetery Beverly, Burlington, New Jersey. He married20<\/a><\/sup>Mierken\/Coates marriage: Pennsylvania Marriages 1709-1940 at FamilySearch, https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:V26R-TKZ<\/u> (accessed 29 Mar 2019).<\/span> 25 May 1823 at Philadelphia Lydia Langdale Coates<\/b><\/span>. He was a merchant sailor and had his citizenship papers21<\/a><\/sup>John W. Mierken: U. S. Citizenship Affidavits of US-born Seamen at Select Ports, 1792-1869, 12 Jun 1815, witnessed by Peter \u2018Miercken\u2019; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 27 Mar 2019).<\/span> witnessed by Peter \u2018Miercken\u2019 (his father). John and Lydia had two sons in 1830.22<\/a><\/sup>1830 U. S. Census of West Southwark, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John and Lydia were 30-40yrs and there was one additional female in that age group (John or Lydia\u2019s mother?), plus one male 5-10yrs, and one male 10-15yrs; https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:XHGY-SL6<\/u>; online at FamilySearch (accessed 29 Mar 2019).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

   In the Peter Mierken household there were two younger daus: Estelle Paget Mierken<\/b><\/span> (b. 1812) and Anna Elizabeth Mierken<\/b><\/span> (b. 1815). These spinster ladies (Estelle and Anna) and the widow Catherine (Mierken) Myers<\/b><\/span> ran a private school in Philadelphia; Estelle wrote a will23<\/a><\/sup>Estelle Paget Mierkin will: Pennsylvania, Wills and Probate Records, No. 132, Jan 19, 1892, names her father Peter Mierkin and others; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 5 May 2019).<\/span> that was useful in a genealogical sense. The will24<\/a><\/sup>Anna Elizabeth Mierkin will: Pennsylvania, Wills and Probate Records, No. 169, filed 7 Sep 1844, names key nieces and nephews and deceased sister Rebecca Webster; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 5 May 2019).<\/span> of her aunt Anna Elizabeth Mierken<\/b><\/span> 1774-1844) was even more useful in revealing the family structure; in particular naming her sister Rebecca (Mierken) Webster<\/b><\/span>, who died before 1844.<\/span><\/p>\n

Raymond Bastian ancestors: Pennsylvania and Suffolk, England<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

   Mr. Bastian\u2019s current pedigree, based on paper sources, goes back to a James Merkins (d. 1831) of Philadelphia County, brother of Peter. At this point it seems that ALL the Philadelphia references are to the German Peter and his family. Not so, but not by much\u2026there remains a Peter Merken in the 1840 census25<\/a><\/sup>Peter Merken: 1840 U. S. Census of Kensington Ward 3 Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, National Archives Roll M704, Roll 488, p. 54, household of 5: husband and wife 50-60 yrs, 3 children\u20141 under 5, one 5-10yrs., and one 10-15yrs.(grand-children?); https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:XHTC-1TT<\/u>; online at FamilySearch (accessed 27 Mar 2019).<\/span> of Kensington Ward 3, Philadelphia (household of 5); the German Peter died in 1822. This is the first appearance of Kensington (north<\/b> Philly, on the Delaware river) in the Merkin record; the German Mierkens were all in Southwark (south Philly, on the Delaware river), Philadelphia county. No other records regarding this Kensington family have been uncovered. According to this census record Peter and his wife were born 1780-1790. There is no obvious genealogical identity for this Peter Merken. He is probably born too late to be the brother of James Merkins of Byberry Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania since James married in 1796. From the at-DNA<\/b> data (discussed below) we are locked into believing James and his brother originated in Suffolk, England<\/u>. There are no candidate families in western Suffolk who had a son Peter born 1780-1790. The Peter Merken of the 1840 census could be a son of Peter Murkin of Suffolk but there are no records to support this. <\/span><\/p>\n

   All Merkin\/Murkin\/Mierckin records in Pennsylvania have been investigated and attributed to one of the Merkins families, but there remains one outlier: William Murkin,26<\/a><\/sup>\u2018William Meirken\u2019, 1820 U. S. Census of Philadelphia, South Mulberry Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, FHL Film 181,413; https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:XHLN-65L<\/u>; online at FamilySearch (accessed 5 May 2019).<\/span>,27<\/a><\/sup>\u2018William Murkin\u2019, 1840 U. S. Census of New York Ward 3, New York, New York, Roll 299, FHL Film 0017194, William is now married; online at Ancestry (accessed 5 May 2019).<\/span>,28<\/a><\/sup>\u2018William E. Markin\u2019, 1850 U. S. Census of German, Fayette, Pennsylvania, Roll M432_779, Page 38B, Image 82, Family 230; online at Ancestry (accessed 5 May 2019).<\/span> born abt 1788 at Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania\u2014he could also be a son of Peter b. 1767 at Suffolk. William married abt 1824 Eva ____<\/b><\/span> and they had at least two children: Nancy b. 1825 and William H. b. 1832. <\/span><\/p>\n

James Merkin\u2019s forebears<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

   James is often referred to as \u2018John James Merkins, b. 1770\u2019\u2014the \u2018John, b. 1770<\/u>\u2019 part apparently comes from a single reference29<\/a><\/sup>John D. Merkin, U. S. Army Register of Enlistments, 17 May 1815, age 45 (b. 1770), occupation: \u2018sugar refiner\u2019; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 29 Mar 2019).<\/span> to a \u2018John D. Merkin\u2019, age 45 in 1815. This record states he was a \u2018sugar refiner\u2019\u2014but this is the trade of the German Mierckens! This is probably NOT the James Merkins from Byberry as there is no other mention in the written record of the name \u2018John\u2019, no other mention of a middle name beginning with \u2018D\u2019 and no other indication that he was a veteran of the War of 1812; this record is therefore judged to be irrelevant to the English (Suffolk) family. Therefore \u2018James Merkins<\/u>\u2019 is the correct name for the husband of Elizabeth Capehart consistent with the record.<\/span><\/p>\n

   This author has spent many hours searching for the birth\/origin of James Merkins\/Murkins in England; that search had not been completed and was not successful. FamilySearch Family Tree<\/i> has parents for James Merkins: A John Murkin (Francis1 John2) born 1753 and died 1772,30<\/a><\/sup>John \u2018Mirkin\u2019 burial 19 Nov 1772: England, Essex Parish Registers, https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:QLGB-4YWZ<\/u>; online at FamilySearch (accessed 27 March 2019).<\/span> the son of Francis31<\/a><\/sup>Francis Murkin, UK, Poll Books and Electoral Registers, 1538-1893, year 1763, 2nd book, p. 5, Walden and Uttlesford Hundred, Debden Parish and UK, Land Tax Redemption 1798, Debden Parish, Essex, Vol 3; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 10 mar 2019).<\/span> and Ann (Rushforth) Merkins of Debden Parish, Essex, England.32<\/a><\/sup>\u2018Bell Family Tree\u2019, owner: fionamather99, trees.ancestry.com\/tree\/8351644, some sources and detail (accessed 9 March 2019).<\/span> However, there is no birth record for James, b. 1770 in Essex. Also, there is at least one James Murkin who died in Essex (1813) who could be reasonably considered to be a hypothetical son of John Murkin. If so, this would be proof that this James did not immigrate. The Debden parish Murkin family of Essex must be rejected as the origin of the Byberry Township James Merkins without more convincing data.<\/span><\/p>\n

   James\u2019 purported grand<\/u>parents, Francis and Ann (Rushforth) Merkins, had a son Peter b. 1846,33<\/a><\/sup>England, Parish Registers 1538-1991, son of Francis and Ann Mirkin; https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:QLGB-GT8D<\/u>; online at FamilySearch (accessed 27 Mar 2019).<\/span> but he married in Essex, had children and likely died in Essex as there are two possibilities from the Essex death records that cannot be distinguished without more information. He is also very unlikely (born too early) to be the immigrant Peter Merken. <\/span><\/p>\n

The at-DNA breakthrough<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

   An at-DNA<\/b> match has been able to shed some light on the situation. \u2018Carolyne Carter\u2019 (descendant of Benjamin Murkin of Poslingford, Suffolk, England) and \u2018Raymond Bastian\u2019 (descendant of James Merkins of Pennsylvania, USA) share 7.5 cM (single segment). From the amount of DNA shared it is clear that they are likely 7th cousins (see DNApainter.com). Raymond\u2019s niece (\u2018BastianM53\u2019) also shares 9 cM at-DNA<\/b> with \u2018Carolyne Carter\u2019. It is clear that southwestern Suffolk is the ancestral home of the Murkin family as there are more than 50 Murkin baptisms in the Clare deanery in the time period 1754-1812; see Figure 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

   The Hundon and Poslingford parishes are adjacent in the Clare deanery (Figure 3, southwestern corner) and also in the Risbridge hundred (in 1830 deanery and hundred possessed nearly identical territories except at the northern border). Examination of the baptisms in the Clare deanery revealed that there is only one Peter Murkin, christened 1767 son of James and Mary (Harlock) Murkin of Stoke-by-Clare parish (St. John the Baptist church). Stoke-by-Clare parish is adjacent to and directly south of Hundon parish (Figure 4). He had a brother James christened 1764 in the same parish. We finally have a solid link from England to the American Merkins! <\/span><\/p>\n

   The distant cousins Raymond Bastian and Carolyne Carter therefore both possess ancestor Murkin families in very close proximity vide infra<\/i> in the Clare deanery of Suffolk. Additionally, the brothers James and Peter Murkin do not have Suffolk burial dates34<\/a><\/sup>Suffolk Burial Index, Suffolk Family History Society, c2005 CD-ROM (at FHL); search Murkin\/Markin\/Merkin\/Mirkin (accessed 15 Jul 2019).<\/span> in the time period 1760-1840 supporting the supposition that they immigrated to America. James Murkin (father of James and Peter) was the son of Peter Murkin in the Stoke-by-Clare parish; this Peter Murkin is the most probable Common Ancestor of the cousins (see DNApainter.com) although it also could be Peter\u2019s father or grandfather.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carolyne Carter ancestors: Suffolk, England<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

   Carolyne Carter has a tree on Ancestry35<\/a><\/sup>\u2018Carolyne\u2019s Family Tree\u2019, owner Carolyne Carter, www.ancestry.com\/family-tree\/tree\/54679300<\/u> (accessed 26 Jun 2019).<\/span> describing her descent from Benjamin Murkin (b. 1857) of Poslington Parish, Suffolk. Benjamin was the son of George and Caroline (Wordley) Murkin of Hundon parish.36<\/a><\/sup>George Murkin family, 1851 England and Wales Census of Poslingford, Suffolk; online at FindMyPast and FamilySearch, https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:SGRF-MCS<\/u> (accessed 15 Jul 2019).<\/span>,37<\/a><\/sup>George \u2018Murking\u2019 Household, 1871 Census of England and Wales of Poslingford, Suffolk, George (age 61, b. 1810, Hundon, Suffolk) and Caroline (age 53), 4 children at FamilySearch including Benjamin, age 14; https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/1:1:VFN3-X7W<\/u> (accessed 5 Apr 2019).<\/span> In all four English censuses George states his birthplace (in 1816) as Hundon parish. Unfortunately, there is no findable birth\/christening record for George. <\/span><\/p>\n

   A search (surname: Murkin and location: Suffolk) of Carolyne Carter\u2019s at-DNA<\/b> matches got 7 hits: (1<\/b>) \u2018Leonard Pickstone\u2019,17cM; (2<\/b>) \u2018H. S.\u2019, 17cM; (3<\/b>)\u2018Joan Beard\u2019, 16cM; (4<\/b>) \u2018LisaLawrence\u2019, 16cM; (5<\/b>) \u2018Rebecca Ronk\u2019, 14cM; (6<\/b>) \u2018richiefp13\u2019, 8cM; and (7<\/b>) \u2018julesEuro\u2019, 6cM.<\/span><\/p>\n

   No. 4<\/b>, (her tree is private) is a 3rd cousin (common ancestor George Murkin, b 1816).<\/span><\/p>\n

   No.\u2019s (2<\/b>), (3<\/b>), (5<\/b>) and (6<\/b>) are 4th cousins (common ancestor Wm Murkin, b. abt 1777. <\/span><\/p>\n
