The Lott Family of Marion County, Mississippi<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The Lotts were among the first settlers1<\/a><\/sup>Marion County Historical Society History of Marion County, Mississippi (Marceline, Missouri: Walsworth,Publishing Company, 1976) p. 6; hereafter Marion County History<\/b>.<\/span> of Marion County, Mississippi about 1806; they came from Tattnall County, Georgia. They came to Georgia from Edgecombe County, North Carolina in the early 1760\u2019s. Everyone pretty much agrees that the Lotts came from Virginia to North Carolina, but that is where the agreement ends.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Considering all sources, genealogists and na\u00efve family tree builders are pretty much divided about whether the Mississippi Lotts came to Virginia from the Netherlands or Southern England.2<\/a><\/sup>A report on www.geni.com<\/u> (without sources) states that William Lott was an immigrant from southern England around 1650. This author can find nothing that substantiates this.<\/span> There is an unsubstantiated report,3<\/a><\/sup>A note (15 Jun 1970) from Stanton Lott of Johnston, South Carolina (recorded by W. N. Lott) states that three Lott brothers Emsley, Jesse and John came from Holland and settled on Long Island, New York abt 1770, p. 206 in Lott, Dewel Coleman and Lott, Delores A Lott of Cousins (Hartsell, Alabama: Lott, 1975), the focus of this book is the Fairfield County, South Carolina branch of the Lott family; online at FamilySearch; hereafter A Lott of Cousins<\/b>.<\/span> widely cited, that three Lott brothers (Emsley, Jesse, and John) came from Holland \u2018in 1770\u2019 {sic<\/i>, should be 1670?} to settle on Long Island, New York. They were driven out by the British when they moved in on New Amsterdam (New York City) in the late 17th century. The record4<\/a><\/sup>\u201817th Century Immigrants to New Netherland & New York\u2019, online at www.olivetreegenealogy.com\/nn\/17th\/dny_15.shtml<\/u>; contributor Sandi Burns, t1960@gte.net (accessed 20 Feb 2018).<\/span> shows that a Pieter Lott immigrated in 1652 and settled in Flatbush, Kings, New York; he had children Engelbert (b. abt 1650), Hendrick (b. 10 May 1654), Pieter (b. 1656), Catrina, Johannes (John), and Abraham (b. 1670). The immigrant Pieter Lott was born5<\/a><\/sup>\u2018The Updike-Wiebe Genealogy\u2019 at https:\/\/wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com\/cgibin\/igm\/cyi?op=GET&db=updike&id=173722 (accessed 20 Feb 2018).<\/span> 1626 at Reynerwout in Drenten (Drenthe), Netherlands the son of Engelbret and Sarah (Jennings) Lott; Sarah was English, born Hingham, Norfolk, England. The family is reported to be of French Huguenot origin.6<\/a><\/sup>\u2018Friends of the Lott House\u2019 online at www.lotthouse.org\/history\/the -lott-family\/;<\/u> nice, readable biography of the Dutch family in New York (accessed 20 Feb 2018).<\/span> Engelbret was the son of Pieter (b. 1572) and Susanna (Reast) Lott of Drenthe; Engelbret was born 1600 in Drenthe and died 1631 in Walden, Essex, England. The Dutch family Lott of Flatbush, Kings, Long Island is documented in detail in A. V. Phillips The Lott Family in America<\/i>7<\/a><\/sup>Phillips, Alexander Van Cleve The Lott Family in America<\/i> (Ann Arbor, Michigan: Edwards Bros., 1942).<\/span> and although there is ample opportunity for a link to the North Carolina Lotts, none is proven or suggested.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Alternatively, the Lotts might have originated in Nonington Parish, Kent, England. The immigrant William Lott and his wife Agnes Kingston arrived at Isle of Wight County, Virginia before 1662.8<\/a><\/sup>Hudson, Pamela D. \u2018My Lott Family Genealogy of Wiregrass Georgia\u2019 online at www.redbirdacres.net\/lott. html;<\/u> the \u2018Lott Time Line\u2019 by John Barron is cited (he did the research), but this is no longer available (accessed 7 Jul 2018) hereafter Hudson<\/b>. <\/span> It is not straightforward to connect these Lotts to the first Lott of this descendency, John Lott I, as the records are not there.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Of course, this author chose to believe the Dutch ancestry because it is so much better documented. But, facts are facts and one is not really free to choose among alternatives. Just on an off-chance, the author checked FamilyTreeDNA to see if any data were available on Lotts. Eureka\u2014wonderful Y-DNA data9<\/a><\/sup>\u2018Lott and Lett DNA Project\u2014Y-DNA Colorized Chart\u2019 online at https:\/\/familytreedna.com\/public\/lettlott?iframe=colorized ; the chart is no longer public and is available only to those who have uploaded data and can sign in to the site or this author can print you a copy (accessed 7 Jul 2018).<\/span> that answers critical questions!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0FYI, Y-DNA is the piece of chromosome 3 which specifies all the male hormone receptors and messenger proteins that are necessary to become a biological male (59 million base-pairs). The importance of this is that females do not possess these genes; and hence all males must inherit this piece of DNA unaltered from their fathers. The base-pair sequence of Y-DNA can be traced back for thousands of years<\/i>. Roughly 2 mutations occur each generation and occasionally one of these mutations occurs in one of the key monitoring loci (when you have your Y-DNA sequenced they sequence the whole thing, but monitor specific highly-variable loci\u2014typically 37 sites for the cheapest test\u2014it can be expanded to 67 sites for more money). Based on the mutations that have occurred at each of these loci, your Y-DNA is placed in a \u2018Haplogroup\u2019 (=category) by those determining the base sequence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The FamilyTreeDNA table on the Lott\/Lett family displays Y-DNA datasets from 11 Lotts who descended from Mississippi Lott ancestors\u2014they are all Haplogroup I-M223<\/b>. There is one Y-DNA dataset from an individual who descends from Abraham G. Lott (1777-1866). Abraham is a grandson of Pieter Lott who immigrated to New Amsterdam from the Netherlands in the 17th century.10<\/a><\/sup>Ancestry Family Trees: \u2018Lott Family Tree\u2019, tree 14312583\u2014search Member Directory for owner cklott143 (accessed 7 Jul 2018).<\/span> He is Haplogroup J-M172<\/b>\u2014which unequivocally proves that the Mississippi Lotts do not come from the Netherlands!<\/u> An English origin of the Virginia Lotts makes a lot of sense, as many of the early 18th century Lotts were Tories and their loyalty to the crown is easier to understand if you realize they have English origins.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0From Virginia the Lotts went south settling in North Carolina (Edgecombe County), where the first generation of our sourced Lott genealogy begins with the first of three John Lotts (the first b. abt 1695). John Lott I, was born in Virginia, but went to Georgia and ended his days as an immigrant to British West Florida11<\/a><\/sup>Manna, Gloria J \u2018Descendants of John Lott, Sr., Generation 2\u2019, online at www.genealogy.com\/ftm\/m\/a\/n\/Gloria-J-Manna\/GENE12-0002.html (accessed 5 Jul 2018).<\/span> (created in 1763 and available for colonization after 1772). There is little doubt that John I was a Tory12<\/a><\/sup>Barron, John C. \u2018Early Immigration of the Lott Family to Mississippi\u2019, online at http:\/\/freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com\/~jcbarron\/lott\/LottlmmMS.htm and references cited therein; hereafter Barron<\/b>.<\/span> considering the timing and location of the initial land grant (200 acres in 1775) and the fact that most of his sons fought and died for the Royalist cause. John\u2019s widow was successful in obtaining a land patent in 1778 for 78 acres on the Tombigbee River, granted to her dau (today in Alabama, north of Mobile).13<\/a><\/sup>Peterson, Mary A. \u2018British West Florida Abstracts of Land Petitions\u2019 Louisiana Genealogical Register 31 #2, p. 145; cited in Manna<\/b>.<\/span>,14<\/a><\/sup>Barron<\/b> and sources cited therein.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Meanwhile his son John Lott II (born 1715\/1720) spent most of his life in North Carolina. The genealogists interested in the Lott family are not at all agreed about where this John Lott of Edgecombe County North Carolina is buried\u2026all the bold claims,15<\/a><\/sup>Lott, W. N. \u2018The Lotts Before the Revolution\u2019 (1974), an essay distributed to attendees of the annual Lott Reunion at Macedonia Church, Hall County, Georgia. The essay traces (without references) the Lotts from John Lott, Sr. in Edgecombe County, North Carolina to two of his sons John Jr. (who went to Georgia) and Jesse (who went to Fairfield District, South Carolina). He also talks about the gradual drift of the family from the Carolinas to Georgia and later to Alabama and Mississippi. The author is a descendant of Jesse and states that the link to John Lott, Sr. remains unproven as of that date (1974). He also stated that John Lott, Sr. moved to Fairfield District (County), South Carolina (this is incorrect). This essay was forwarded to Trent Lott, representative of the 5th District of Mississippi in the House of Representatives, whose comment was \u2018this jibes with what my grandfather told me.\u2019 He claims without reference that the Lotts came from New York City and were driven out by the British, essay reproduced in A Lott of Cousins<\/b>, pp. 204-5. Unfortunately, although there is hardly one sentence free from error in the whole talk, the essay is widely cited and believed because it is in print.<\/span> however, are without a body, a marker or a death record. A big source of the confusion is that there are actually TWO adult John Lotts in Edgecombe County in 1750 (probably father and son), this proven by the Edgecombe, North Carolina Deed Book 1, p. 13.16<\/a><\/sup>Watson, Joseph W. Abstracts of early deeds of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, 1759-1788<\/i>, 2 Vols (New Bern, North Carolina: Owen G. Dunn Co., 1966), Book 1, p. 13.<\/span>,17<\/a><\/sup>John Lott b. 1745 (burial place unknown): Findagrave #95707850 (John Lott d. 8 Feb 1808, South Carolina); interesting comments attached including transcription of certain Edgecombe County wills.<\/span> There are also two sons named John Lott born in the early 1740\u2019s to further complicate the picture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0One of these young John Lotts (b. 1745), probably a son of one of John Lott II\u2019s brothers (George), went to Fairfield County, South Carolina about 1770 with other Lotts. Some say18<\/a><\/sup>Blitch, Frances Smith \u2018The Lott Family of Coffee County, Georgia\u2019 an essay in Lott of Cousins<\/b>, pp. 209-214, good references\u2014the focus of the essay is John III (md. Sally) and his son Mark (md. Delilah); hereafter Blitch history<\/b>. <\/span> John went to South Carolina because Georgia \u2018was full of Tories\u2019 (perhaps a reflection of attitudes toward their cousins). In the 1790 U. S. census there are six Lott families in Fairfield County, South Carolina or closeby: George, Sarah, Mark, Joshua, William, and John (b. 1745, md. Elizabeth). In the 1790 census there are no Lotts in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. The Jesse Lott which is the main subject of the Reeves descendency19<\/a><\/sup>Reeves, Hilda Lott Lott Family Genealogy: as descended from Jesse Lott of Edgefield, South Carolina<\/i> (Salt Lake City, UT: privately published, 2009), online at FamilySearch; hereafter Reeves<\/b>.<\/span> is a son of George Lott of Fairfield.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0More to our interest, the other young John Lott, John Lott III (b. 1740, md Sallie Lightfoot), went to Georgia (lots of evidence\u2014mostly land records, not all recounted here), but didn\u2019t die there as many contend, but moved on to be an early settler of Marion County, Mississippi dying there abt 1808 at Washington County, Mississippi.20<\/a><\/sup>Lowrie, Walter Early settlers of Mississippi as taken from land claims in the Mississippi Territory<\/i> (Easley, South Carolina: Southern Historical Press, 1986).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Clearly Generation One<\/i><\/b> of our Lott family were flaming Tories. There are no records of any of the first generation having fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War. Most of Generation Two<\/i><\/b> of the Lotts were already in Mississippi, but some were in Georgia which as already mentioned was a \u2018Tory\u2019 state. Georgia sent no representatives to the first Continental Congress in 1774 (they sent one delegate, Lyman Hall, to the second Continental Congress). The Georgians had prospered under Royalist rule and felt they needed the protection of British troops from Indian attack especially the Creeks and Cherokees.21<\/a><\/sup>Online at Wikipedia.org<\/u> , search: \u2018Georgia in the Revolution\u2019.<\/span> It is a fact that the Native Americans were pretty much under control after 1760 in all the colonies except Georgia. As the war progressed, the British strategy was to take advantage of strong Royalist support in Georgia (which existed virtually nowhere else except Long Island, New York) and therefore Georgia became a battleground in the years 1778-1780. By 1782, the British were in retreat and the patriots had the upper hand.22<\/a><\/sup>Ibid.<\/i><\/span> By Generation Three<\/i><\/b> the Lotts had changed sides; John Lott III was a patriot fighting for South Carolina and Georgia militia. Some suggest that it was his son Jesse Lott (23<\/b>) who proposed the name of Marion County, Mississippi, named for Francis Marion \u2018the Swamp Fox\u2019, the most famous southern patriot of the Revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0It was necessary to develop an unusual number of collateral lines to assure the proper identity of all the Jesse\u2019s. Jesse was a very popular name among the Lotts and there are often 3 or 4 Jesse Lott\u2019s simultaneously generating records in one locality. As is always the case, many were misplaced in family trees, misspelled, coupled to the wrong woman, or sharing some other Jesse\u2019s children.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0A key reference for identifying and tying together the later generations of Lotts are the 1910 and 1920 censuses of Beat 1, Marion, Mississippi.23<\/a><\/sup>Jesse \u2018Latt\u2019 family: 1910 U. S. Census of Beat 1, Marion, Mississippi, Roll T624_751, Page 9A, E. D. 101, Dwelling 146, FHL Film 1374764, Emily: 6 of 8 children alive in 1910, Jesse (age 66) and Emilie (age 64) with their son Wilman (age 28) and his wife Elizabeth and son J(ames) Leston Lott and 1920 U. S. Census of Beat 1, Marion, Mississippi, Roll T625_886, Page 11A, E. D. 113, Jessie (age 78) is living with Wilman and Lizzie with their two children; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 17 Dec 2017); hereafter Lotts in 1910\/1920 census.<\/span> Here in 1910 Jesse and Emilie Lott are living with their son Wilman Lott (often misread as William Lott) and his wife Elizabeth and their four year old son J(ames) Leston Lott. Many others have placed this four year old incorrectly with other parents and grandparents.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The descendency from John b. 1695 to James Leston Lott proceeds as follows: John I (1<\/b>, b. 1695), John II (2<\/b>, b. 1722), John III (8<\/b>, b. 1740), Luke (21<\/b>, b. 1770), Joshua Samuel (29<\/b>, 1802), Jesse Elisha (49<\/b>, b. 1844), Wilman (59<\/b>, 1879), and James Leston (76<\/b>, b. 1905).<\/span><\/p>\n

GENEALOGICAL SUMMARY<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Generation 1<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1. John Lott I<\/b><\/a> was born abt 1695 at Virginia and died before 22 Jan 1778 at British West Florida (on the \u2018Tombecky\u2019 {Tombigbee} River 110 miles north of Mobile, Alabama).25<\/a><\/sup>Manna, Gloria J. \u2018Descendants of John Lott, Sr., Generations 1-4\u2019, online at www.genealogy.com\/ftm\/m\/a\/n\/Gloria-J-Manna\/GENE12-0001.html<\/u>; these research notes have proven to be the most reliable of all researchers surveyed (accessed 5 Jul 2018) hereafter Manna<\/b>.<\/span> He married (1) abt 1719 Elizabeth Joyner<\/b><\/span> dau of John and Elizabeth (Brown) Joyner.26<\/a><\/sup>Arguments presented effectively in Manna<\/b>, ignored in Hudson<\/b>, Barron<\/b>. John I provided a jurant (testimony) as to the identity of James Joyner 13 Feb 1733 at Bertie County, North Carolina\u2014probably indicates he was a relative (in law).<\/span> He married (2) before 1775 Emile ____<\/b><\/span>. He filed on various lands in Edgecombe County, later in Duplin County, North Carolina and then in 1775 immigrated to British West Florida (he was a Tory as were many of his sons).27<\/a><\/sup>Manna<\/b>; several sources are cited that are unavailable to the author.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 John and Elizabeth (Joyner) Lott had six children.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 +\u00a02.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0i. \u00a0 JOHN LOTT II<\/span> was born abt 1722 probably at Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He married (2) Bethany ____<\/b><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a03.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 ii. \u00a0 DANIEL LOTT<\/span> was born abt 1730. In 1764 he was filing on land in St. George\u2019s Parish, Burke, Georgia.28<\/a><\/sup>Manna<\/b> and references therein; consistently cites Barron\u2019s \u2018A Review of the Southern Colonial Lott family\u2019 1998, no longer available online or anywhere else that the author can find.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a04.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0iii. \u00a0 MARK LOTT<\/span> was born abt 1733; wife unknown. He settled in Bladen County, North Carolina and then moved in 1770\u2019s to Colleton County, South Carolina and finally to a plantation on the Edisto River in Edgefield County, South Carolina.29<\/a><\/sup>Ibid.<\/i>; cites extensive land records and an Edgefield County will.<\/span> (at least 2 girls).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a05.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0iv. \u00a0 JAMES LOTT<\/span> was born abt 1735; he was a casualty in the Revolutionary War (Tory), died abt 1780 at South Carolina.30<\/a><\/sup>Clark, Murtie June Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War<\/i> (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1981) Vol. 3, p. 415 and Vol. 1, p. 11; cited in Manna<\/b>.<\/span> He enlisted in 1779 at Savannah, GA in Capt. John Murphy\u2019s SC Royalists. He married Hannah ____<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a06.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0v. \u00a0 JESSE LOTT<\/span> was born abt 1733 and died 1782 at South Carolina as a loyalist (Tory)31<\/a><\/sup>Clark, Murtie June Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War<\/i> (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1981) Vol. 3, p. 415; cited in Manna.<\/span> in the Revolutionary War. He married abt 1770 Sarah Frederick<\/b><\/span>. (5 children). They lived in Edgefield County, South Carolina; he received a land grant in Colleton Co., Georgia in 1771. His estate was probated in Abbeville County, South Carolina, wife Sarah was administratrix. (5 children).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a07.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0vi. \u00a0 ANN LOTT<\/span> was born abt 1735.32<\/a><\/sup>Manna<\/b>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Generation 2<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2. John Lott II (John1<\/sup>)<\/b><\/a> was born abt 1722 probably at Isle of Wight County, Virginia (of Edgecombe County,33<\/a><\/sup>NC Early Census Index of Edgecombe County 1742, online at Ancestry.com (accessed 13 Feb 2018).<\/span> North Carolina, later Duplin County, North Carolina and finally Georgia abt 1761) and died after 179534<\/a><\/sup>Georgia Land Records, 30 Jan 1795: John Lott and Sally his wife give to \u2018his father John Lott\u2019 950 acres with various livestock in Screven County, Georgia, pp. 193-194. Later that year (11 Oct 1795) there is another transfer of livestock, this time from John Lott Sr. to his \u2018dutiful and loving son John Lott\u2019, p. 194.<\/span> at Montgomery, Tattnall, Georgia.35<\/a><\/sup>Reeves<\/b>.<\/span>,36<\/a><\/sup>A Lott of Cousins<\/b>, only one child, John Jr. is listed here, p. 134.<\/span> He married abt 1739 at North Carolina (1)37<\/a><\/sup>Manna<\/b>; it is argued that there must have been a first wife as when property was filed on in St. George\u2019s Parish, Burke, Georgia in 1764, it was John II\u2019s name alone on the documents; this means he was single. No household member would have been omitted in these declarations as the size of the grant was dependent on how many were filing.<\/span>,38<\/a><\/sup>\u2018John Lott II (1720-after 1795)\u2019, online at www.wikitree.com\/wiki\/Lott-49<\/u> ; wikitree can be a useful summary especially since each page has a manager and posted data are a consensus of contributing family members (accessed 7 Jul 2018) hereafter Wikitree<\/b>.<\/span> unknown<\/b><\/span>, died before 1764 and (2) Bethany ____<\/b><\/span>. She was born 1724 and died 1795 at Georgia. There are various land records (patents, 1730-1750\u2019s) in Edgecombe County and Duplin County for John and Elizabeth Lott.39<\/a><\/sup>Lott of Cousins<\/b>, p. 192.<\/span> They made the move to St. George\u2019s Parish, Georgia in the 1760\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since we have an 1824 marriage date to Roseann, we have to consider the children by Catherine to be illegitimate (the children were apparently not raised in Joshua\u2019s household). Most published trees acknowledge that the children probably came from two different mothers (otherwise, why were there only two children in Joshua\u2019s 1830 census household?).<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018first wife\u2019 was described in many trees as Catherine (Kathie) Lott (no sources), a cousin; she is also suggested to be a Catherine Wiggins<\/i>, dau of William Jesse and Barbara (Watts) Wiggins, also born in Georgia.
