The Leicestershire Wilford Family to America

In two generations of the Leicestershire Wilford family, 6 sons immigrated to America: 6 James1 (EdwardA), 7 Frederick1 (EdwardA), 9 William1 (EdwardA), 12 Edward2 (John1 EdwardA), 14 Hardy2 (John1 EdwardA), and 16 Reuben2 (John1 EdwardA). The first two went to Wisconsin, William to Nevada via Australia, Edward to Wisconsin and then Kansas, Hardy to Wisconsin and then into the American Civil War, and Reuben to Iowa.

The immigration or naturalization records of these individuals do not reveal their origins in England.1,2,3
Frederick, James, and Margaret Catherine Wilford were presumed to be related because they are together on the ship ‘Atlantic’ at their arrival in New York on 1 Jun 1844.4 Similarly, Hardy and Edward are presumed to be close relatives in the same family, because of their Wisconsin association with James5 and Frederick6 respectively. Margaret Catherine (Holyland) Wilford was shown to be James’ wife from their marriage record.7 This was not obvious at first from the great disparity of their ages (15 years)—James continually reported his age older than he really was and Margaret always reduced her age until she finally reported her correct age (at 76) in the 1880 U. S. Census.8
William (the argonaut) went first to Australia on the ‘Sophia’9 in 1850 and then to Nevada in 1855 on the ‘Tarquinia’ (which sank in Hawaii) and then the ‘Williamatic’ which docked in San Francisco.10 He first appears in Nevada records in 1859 when a William Wilford filed on two pieces of property in the Carson Valley (Utah Territory);11 he married Priscilla Clark Pickett in 1862, had three children before he died of smallpox 21 Jan 1869 in Carson City, Ormsby, Nevada. His wife Priscilla was murdered for money in July 1869 making the children orphans and wards of the state of Nevada. In 1870, a man named Frederick Wilford appeared in Carson City to petition the court for the custody of the children.12 In the petition letter he stated that he was William’s brother (he was actually a half-brother) and that he was an established farmer in Wisconsin.
The only Frederick Wilford in the Wisconsin censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870 (except for Frederick’s son Frederick, b.1855) is the Frederick Wilford (b.1821) who immigrated from Leicestershire in 1844.
In 1861 Edward Wilford married Charlotte Ann Wilford (a first cousin), daughter of Frederick and Ann James Wilford of Eagle, Waukesha, Wisconsin; their marriage record is found in ‘Waukesha marriages’13 (see below, ref 58 and Fig. 3). Edward lists his parents there as John and Elizabeth Wilford of Leicestershire, England. Searching the 1851 British Census, a John and Elizabeth Wilford are found in South Croxton, Leicester and they have sons Edward (age 12, b. abt 1839), Hardy (age 9, b. abt 1842) and Reuben (age 7, b. abt 1844).14 Thus we deduce that three of our six immigrants are brothers, children of Edward Wilford, b. 1787 and the other three younger men are children of a fourth brother John.

Generation A
1. EdwardA Wilford, christened 30 Jul 1787 in Great Dalby, Leicestershire, England; died 1830 in South Croxton, Leicestershire, buried 11 Apr 1830, St. John the Baptist Church cemetery, South Croxton, Leicestershire, England.16 He married17 on 15 Jul 1810 in South Croxton, Leicestershire Ann Denshaw/Denshire, christened 22 Aug 1790 in Tilton, Leicestershire, England daughter of John and Anne (née Simpson) Denshire.18 She died in Oct 1823 at South Croxton, Leicestershire and was buried in St. John the Baptist Church cemetery on 11 Oct 1823.19

Edward married20 a widow on 17 Feb 1824 in St. John the Baptist Church, South Croxton, Leicestershire (2) Ann Gutteridge, born 1786 at Walton on the Wolds, Leicestershire to Thomas and Ann (née Hammonds) Gutteridge.21 Ann had been married22 23 Dec 1805 at Prestwold, Leicestershire to (1) John Taylor, born abt 1780; died 2 Jan 1812 at South Croxton, Leicestershire and buried in St. John the Baptist Church cemetery 5 Jan 1812.23 They had a son Thomas born 1807 and two girls, Elizabeth born 1810 and Mary born 1812.24
Edward and Ann (Denshaw) Wilford had seven children in South Croxton, Leicestershire:

EDWARD WILFORD, born 9 Oct 1811 and christened25 11 Oct 1811; died in Aug 1877 and was buried 26 Aug 1877 in St. John the Baptist Church cemetery.26 He married27 in May 1839 Catherine Elizabeth Sibson born 30 Dec 1808 in South Croxton, Leicestershire; died Oct 1889 and was buried in St. John the Baptist Church cemetery 18 Oct 1889.28 {5 Children}

JOHN WILFORD, christened29 7 Mar 1814; died 15 Aug 1873 at Upper Conduit Street, Leicester and was buried 17 Aug 1873 in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester, Leicestershire.30 He married (1) on 17 Oct 183631 in St. John the Baptist Church, South Croxton, Leicester Elizabeth Hardy and (2) on 1 Feb 186032 in the Borough of Leicester Mary Ann ___.
4 iii. THOMAS WILFORD, christened 14 Dec 1815.33
5 iv. MARY WILFORD, christened 21 Jul 1817;34 died 26 Jul 1817 and buried the same day in St. John the Baptist Church cemetery.35
+ 6 v. JAMES WILFORD, christened 20 Jul 1819;36 died 1878 in Plymouth, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA and is buried in Lyndon Cemetery, Plymouth.37 He married 16 Mar 1844 at Leicester Union, Leicester Margaret Catherine Holyland.38
7 vi. FREDERICK WILFORD, christened 3 Jun 1821;39 died at Woodville, St. Croix, Wisconsin, USA on 8 Jun 1892. He married on 14 Sep 1846 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Anna James.40
8 vii. WILLIAM WILFORD, christened41 15 May 1823; died 21 Oct 1823 and was buried 26 Oct 1823 in St. John the Baptist Church cemetery.42
Edward and Ann (Gutteridge) Wilford had two children in South Croxton, Leicestershire parish:

3. John1 (EdwardA) Wilford christened49 7 Mar 1814 in South Croxton, Leicestershire, England; died50 15 Aug 1873 at Upper Conduit Street, Leicester and was buried 17 Aug 1873 in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester, Leicestershire.51 He married52 (1) on 17 Oct 1836 in St. John the Baptist Church, South Croxton, Leicester Elizabeth Hardy daughter of John and Sarah (née Phipps) Hardy. She was born in 1818 in Gaddesby, Leicestershire; died 5 Jul 1858 in the lunatic asylum, Borough of Leicester, Leicestershire and was buried Jul 1858 in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester.53
John married54 (2) on 1 Feb 1860 in the Borough of Leicester Mary Ann ___ born 1815 in Thurnby, Leicestershire; she died after 1881.
John and Elizabeth (Hardy) Wilford had thirteen children:55

13 iii. SARAH WILFORD, born 1840 in Beeby, Leicestershire, England; died59 Sep 1925 at Market Harborough, Leicestershire. She married60 7 Sep 1864 at Melton Mowbray, Leicester Charles Vendy born 1839 at Thorp Langton, Leicestershire and died 12 Feb 1914.61 {13 Children}
14 iv. HARDY WILFORD, born 1842 in Beeby, Leicestershire, England. He emigrated to Wisconsin and enlisted in the Union Army where he was involved in the siege of Vicksburg.62 He died 26 Oct 1863 in Hospital of disease at Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas and was buried in the Little Rock National Cemetery.63 No issue.

She married 5 Jun 1881 at Christ Church, Belper, Derbyshire, England Joseph William Buckby Ross born 5 Aug 1858 at Lutterworth, Leicestershire; he died 23 Feb 1937 and was buried in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester.74 {6 Children}

6. James1 (EdwardA) Wilford christened76 20 Jul 1819 in South Croxton, Leicestershire, England; died 1878 in Plymouth, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA and is buried in Lyndon Cemetery, Plymouth.77 He married78 16 Mar 1844 at Leicester Union, Leicester Margaret Catherine Holyland daughter of William and Mary Holyland.79 She was born 22 Jan 1804 in Ratby, Leicestershire, England; died80 14 Aug 1895 at Plymouth, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA and is buried in the Lyndon Cemetery, Plymouth.81
James and Margaret Catherine (Holyland) Wilford had a daughter:
24 i. MARY H. WILFORD, born 1844 in Ohio as her parents were underway from England to Wisconsin;82 died 1865 in Plymouth, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA and buried in Lyndon Cemetery, Plymouth.83 No issue.

7. Frederick1 (EdwardA) Wilford christened84 3 Jun 1821 at South Croxton, Leicestershire, England; died85 at Woodville, St. Croix, Wisconsin on 9 Jun 1892. He married86 on 14 Sep 1846 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin Anna James daughter of Henry and Mary (née Lindsay) James. She was born 24 Aug 1831 and christened87 28 Aug 1831 in Twyford, Leicestershire, England; died 12 Aug 1899 in Woodville, St. Croix, Wisconsin, USA.88 She emigrated89 to Wisconsin at age 8 with her parents on the ‘Suviah’; the family were among the first settlers of Eagle, Waukesha, Wisconsin; her parents lived and died there. Frederick was a sometime inventor.90 He hosted his nephews (sons of brother John) when they wanted to immigrate to America. When the railroad was being built through Wisconsin, Frederick and his family housed and fed the railroad workers. When he heard (in 1870) that his half-brother William had died in 1869, he traveled to Nevada and attempted to adopt the orphaned children, but the State of Nevada would not release them.
Frederick and Anna (James) Wilford had six children:91

William and Priscilla had three children in Carson City, Ormsby, Nevada, USA.115
31 i. SARAH WILFORD, born 26 September 1864; died by her own hand on 2 November 1918 at Salt Lake City.116 She married John Casper Lanno on 2 October 1886 at Salt Lake City.117 {7 Children}
32 ii. WILLIAM M. WILFORD, born 9 September 1866;died 17 February 1949 in Sonoma County, California.118 He married Martha Jane “Mattie” or “Jennie” Grandbois on 2 July 1895 at Carson City.119 {3 Children}

LILLA ISABEL “LIL” WILFORD, born 4 October 1868 near Carson City, Nevada; died 8 Feb 1954 at Medical Lake, Spokane, Washington.120 She married (1), at Carson City on 31 October 1886 (div), Henry Heidenreich121; (2), at Reno, Washoe, Nevada on 22 November 1910, Jesse Allen Thomas122; and (3), at Ely, White Pine, Nevada on 26 August 1917 (div), Isaiah Sutherland.123 {2 Children by Heidenreich; a daughter by Thomas}
Generation Two
12. Edward2 (John1 EdwardA) Wilford was born Sep 1838 in South Croxton, Leicestershire and died124 in 1925 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas. He married (1)on 27 Jul 1861 at Eagle, Waukesha, Wisconsin Charlotte Ann Wilford daughter of Frederick and Anna (née James) Wilford. She was born 27 Jul 1847 at Eagle, Waukesha, Wisconsin and died there 24 Feb 1917; she is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Eagle.125
Edward married 126 (2) in 1877 in Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas Mary Anderson of County Armagh, Ireland. She was born Feb 1849 and died 1932 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas and interred in the Douglass Cemetery.127 He remained friendly with his first wife’s sibs as E.H. Wilford and family were visitors in Kansas during the census enumeration.128 Edward was Mary’s second husband; she had married in Ireland and had a daughter Belle from this marriage.
Edward and Charlotte Ann (Wilford) Wilford had a daughter:129
34 i. ELENORA ELIZABETH WILFORD, born 9 Aug 1865 at Eagle, Waukesha, Wisconsin. She married130 (1) 30 Oct 1880 at St. Croix, Wisconsin Sidney Welch and (2) 5 Jul 1886 at Butler, Kansas Martin Arthur Rockteacher and (3) 15 Sep 1894 Willis M. Edward and Mary (Anderson) Wilford had five children:132
35 i. THOMAS E. WILFORD, born 2 Aug 1878 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas and died there 3 Jan 1929; interred in the Douglass Cemetery.133 He married Clara E. Starkey, born 1881 in Kansas.134
36 ii. JULIA M. WILFORD, born May 1878 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas. She married in 1898 Arthur D. Vint.135 {1 Child Myrtle}
37 iii. SARAH A. WILFORD, born 21 Sep 1885 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas and died 2 Jan 1972 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas; interred in the Douglass Cemetery.136 She married Charles H. (Bert) Shanks, born 12 Apr 1880 and died 21 Aug 1941 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas; interred in the Douglass Cemetery.137
38 iv. LILIAN WILFORD, born 18 Jun 1886 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas and died 14 Dec 1887 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas; interred in the Douglass Cemetery.138
39 v. MABEL WILFORD, born Feb 1888 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas and died 24 Jun 1953 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas; interred in the Douglass Cemetery.139 She married Jesse O. Darter born 24 Oct 1885 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas and died 8 Dec 1972 at Douglass, Butler, Kansas; interred in the Douglass Cemetery.140 {6 children}

Reuben2 ( John1 , EdwardA) Wilford born141 3 Nov 1844 at Beeby, Leicestershire; died142 29 Sep 1915 at Shell Rock, Butler, Iowa and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock.143 Reuben immigrated in 1863.144 He was a butcher and proprietor of a meat shop. He married145,146 1 May 1870 in Butler County, Iowa Julia Scofield Dewitt daughter of Thomas H. and Amy (née Adams) Dewitt.147 She was born 15 Feb 1840 in New York; died 28 Mar 1923, buried in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock, Butler, Iowa.148 She married (1) ___ Devoe abt 1864, probably in New York.149

40 i. DERWIN M. DEVOE (WILFORD), born 6 Jul 1865 in New York; died 18 Jan 1897 in Shell Rock, Butler, Iowa, buried in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock150 He married151 26 Jul 1890 at Bremer County, Iowa Julia Louisa Johns born 1862 in Cedar County, Iowa. No issue.
Reuben and Julia (Dewitt) Wilford had two children:152
